The weirdest, most interesting cookbook you'll ever read

Just thought I'd share because I've never read a book like this. My son bought it for me for Christmas because he knows I'm a bit of a prepper. I don't have a bunker or anything but I do keep dozens of cans of food and essentials stowed away just in case. You never know with all the hurricanes, floods and other disasters over the past couple years when you might be stuck without food for awhile.

This cookbook has a bunch of recipes for meals that can be stored without refrigeration for months or even years. What I love about it though is the backstories behind every meal. It's like a history book and a cookbook had a baby.

For the past few weeks I've been making a bunch of them, some are a bit weird and some have been surprisingly tasty. My husband is probably getting sick of me making these weird concoctions in our kitchen but it's so interesting.

When you read about the meals our ancestors lived off it's hard not to want to try them just to experience it. I won't give away any spoilers but if you like history and survival meals and techniques then I would highly recommend this book.

I got my son to send me the link to the website where he got it, it's https://www.thelostsurvivalfoods.com/

Choose My Adventure, FoCo!

Ok, so I want you, yes, you! The fine people of the FoCo sub-Reddit to dictate my day!

On Friday, February 7th I will do the most upvoted three (possibly 4) things in this thread. The idea is that I will do three (or 4) things in Fort Collins that you all choose and update this or a new thread (with pics) as we go along. I’m thinking of doing…

  1. either a coffee shop/brunch/lunch

  2. diner and drinks

  3. something unique to do

  4. Bonus late night/extra activity?

I will try to bring a friend along with me, but may have to roll dolo on this journey. Also gonna try to keep the budget about $300 for everything in total as well.

What’s up, FoCo? Let’s Fucking Gooooo!

Growing a Plumeria in Fort Collins

Has anyone had any experience growing a Plumeria in Fort Collins?

The plant that we have is in a pot and we would bring it in for the winter/colder months. However, if it really isn't feasible to have one here (too dry, not long enough warm weather, etc), then we may give it to some friends in California.

Looking for Wood chips/mulch (free)?

Does anyone know of or have a tree chipping business that would drop a somewhat large load of wood chips for my backyard? I signed up on ChipDrop months ago to no avail.

Thank you, neighbors!

Witchy herbalist workshops or groups?

I love Tarot and herbs and so I am looking for groups or workshops to connect with and learn from. I'm newish to the area and would love to learn more about what plants are natively available to forage in the area. Looking to feel a sense of community most of all. Caveat: I'm not a love and light gal and I want a group that acknowledges herbs can be dangerous with certain medications and pre-existing conditions. Bonus points if it is lesbian centric. Got a whole lot of "BGT+" in my family/friend group and not a lot of "L" 😂 🎶"all by myseeeelf"🎶

Looking For Vet Options for My Dog's Surgery

My 6yr old boxer (large breed) has 3 skin tags that are very slowly growing, currently none are bigger than a dime. We had them tested at Aspen Grove and the results came back as 'malignant tumors with histamines'. Initially we were quoted $900 during the checkup but after the results came in we were then quoted a little over $2,000. As I'm sure most of you know, it isn't financially easy living in Fort Collins. My husband and I are living paycheck to paycheck essentially and are planning to put this medical bill straight onto a credit card. We obviously want the best for our pup BUT we dont want to break the bank either. SO - Does anyone have any knowledge of a good vet in or around town with reasonable prices for surgeries like this? TIA

Police Impersonator Arrested W/ Evidence Near Horsetooth Reservoir, Jan 31st 2025

https://www.denver7.com/news/local-news/fort-collins-man-accused-of-impersonating-a-police-officer-and-trying-to-pull-over-driver-near-horsetooth-res

Amidst unsubstantiated posts regarding the presence of ICE in Fort Collins, with confirmed reports coming from Loveland CO, we have people attempting to take the law into their own hands for reasons unknown.

"Clark was arrested on Thursday on charges of impersonating a police officer, which is a class 5 felony, and knowingly possessing a vehicle equipped with red and blue lights, which is a traffic offense."

Stay Safe, and Be Vigilant. If you think a situation is odd, trust your instincts.

Local news and my attempt to get back into reporting

Hello there,

I'm looking for some feedback on local news in Fort Collins and specifically if there's a niche in coverage that an independent journalist like myself could fill.

I'm looking to start an independent reporting newsletter that focuses on issues important to our community that doesn't receive the kind of coverage it deserves. I'm not saying this to bash any of our local media, but rather I'm looking to make a career change back into local reporting. I've worked for journalism outlets at all levels -- corporate, university, non-profit and family-owned. For my next act, I'd like to try working for an audience of folks who might support my reporting through donations or subscriptions.

Some important context: This operation will be me and just me. I want to focus on information that is important to the community, and I want to present it in a way that adheres to the Society of Professional Journalists' Code of Ethics. My economic model will be donations and subscriptions from the community of readers I hope to build.

A little about me: I'm a halftime instructor at Colorado State. For the last 10 years, I've been involved in supporting student journalists through student media at Colorado State and Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne. I've done a little bit of everything in my journalism career, including covering local government, law enforcement, elections, business and sports. I'm not looking to get rich, I just want to make enough money to pay my bills. :)

Here's where I need your help: What should I cover? What should my niche be? What is our local news ecosystem missing and how can I fill it? What kind of local information would you pay $5 per month to get?

Thank you all for your help!
-- Jake Sherlock

Wedding Suit

Looking for recommendations for places to buy or rent a suit for my wedding. I'd rather not go to Mens Warehouse or to spend an arm and a leg at something like Bespoke Edge.

Seems like we're pretty limited with options in town.

Physical therapy recommendation for reoccurring ankle sprains

Does anyone have a recommendation for physical therapy in town for reoccurring ankle sprains? I've already completed a 2 month session at Colorado in Motion but my therapist didn't use any massage or stretching techniques - just strengthening exercises. I had good results but after another recent minor sprain I'm also experiencing pain in my hip and plantar fascitis.

Kid friendly nail salon?

My 8 year old is starting to take an interest in all things glam and I’d love to take her to get her nails done. I know many places will work with kiddos but would love to hear from anyone who has had a good experience with any who are particularly good with littles. Thanks!

Renting travel van or SUV with roof tent?

I'm going to a conference in Fort Collins this summer. I'd like to take some time off after that and travel around Colorado a bit. Would anyone recommend where I can rent an equipped travel van or some sort of SUV with a roof top tent? Thanks to everyone for recommending!

Garage Conversion Costs

Hello! Fiance and I are considering taking our very old single garage that is in pretty rough condition and investing into converting it into another living space. We currently do have electricity that runs in there but we would want to add a small bathroom as well.

Has anyone had experience doing this recently? If so, how much did it run you? Please share any recommended contractors as well please!

Community Action

I am struggling with the current national policies and want to focus more locally. What organizations, committees, groups, whatever are doing good things locally? Any volunteer opportunities for making our community safer for targeted individuals or making sure access to resources is maintained? What good things are going on?
