Arterial cut

When I accidentally injured myself it was deep enough to puncture something and blood squirt. But I have no access to any medical care. It’s not bleeding at the moment but in my sleep it started bleeding again and I woke up in a pool of blood. How can I prevent this if I can’t get any treatment?

Best field suture kit/components to look for? After getting recertified in first aid I figured it would be helpful (and cool) to learn to do stitches on myself, but the few times I’ve done it has just been with a sterilized sewing needle and clean thread so I’d like to get a real kit

Context: my great-uncle knows how to stitch himself so I wanted to emulate him, and since I make (and mess with) knives I often get deep cuts. None of them have genuinely required stitches but I like practicing on them and so far it’s led to them healing faster with less scarring. I sometimes use lidocaine to numb skin around the cut but other than that it’s “bite down on piece of leather and send it”, although I make sure I clean and sterilize the needle, thread, and cut and then put some antibiotics on

Abdominal thrusts on kids

I was told today that this is not to be done on kids, and sharp blow between shoulder blades was better - but I thought it was ok to do abdominal thrust on toddlers and older if choking not subsiding after blows to back? My nephew had a bit of a choking incident today and I asked whether anyone had done a do thrust and my sister said it wasn’t to be done to kids, I didn’t push any further as she was clearly a bit shaken, but I feel like she should know for any future incidents? My nephew is 6 years old

Ice Burn or Tissue Damage?

I fell asleep with an ice pack directly on my arm forearm for about an hour. When I woke up, I could only open and close the hand slowly.

The hand movement has come back, but the skin still feels numb and is a bit red, even after a 20 minute soack in ~100 degree water.

Should I be concerned there is tissue damage, or likely just a burn to the outermost layer of skin?

Cut myself today on a rock

Is this part of rock debris or just part of a regular wound? Trying to get these black spots out with soap and water but doesn't seem to work

Cut my forehead

I hit my head into a traffic sign hard and that cut into my forehead. Applied alcohol cotton for 10-15 mins. Blooding stopped. Applied iodine. What you think? Should I cover it or just leave like this open?

PS: I have my Tdap last year.

How do I avoid a keloid?

Got cut doing dishes about a month ago (March 5) scar is about 3" long. Healing well but now it feels raised. Trying to avoid at least a keloid since I'm pretty sure I'm stuck with this ugly scar. I've been applying coconut oil. Any tips on how to avoid a hideous keloid? Thanks.

So I've just put vaseline for the first time on the new dressing I applied, and when I checked hours later it looked like this (didn't happen with other dressings w/o vaseline). Is this pus or just the vaseline?

Blister advice! *not me but my bf*

first & foremost, please refrain from judgement. it’s rude & were two college students who can’t afford an ER visit …

Today while my bf was at work, an extremely hot pan of water fell on his foot. He told me he instantly took his shoe & sock off and had just a small blister on his pinky toe - not enough for him to worry. He went through the remainder of work alright ? i’m not sure how but he managed and came home only to discover this on his foot! Although i’m fairly familiar with burns, it’s been YEARS since i’ve experienced one. He didn’t run any cold water on top or even attempt to ice it (he works in a restaurant setting) so that unfortunately was his first mistake but he’s learning from it now.

What does he need to do? I know it’s best not to drain the blisters & let them naturally pop but he’s worrying about having to miss work and not be able to put a closed toe shoe on for a minimum of a week. Any advice is appreciated! thanks!

how long do i have to leave this covered

I scraped my foot in a motorcycle accident 6 days ago and the doctor said to keep it covered and change the bandage once every two days. but people around me told me to leave it uncovered to heal faster. I was concerned because the white part next to the black spot is where my bone was a little bit visible after the accident and I wonder how long do i have to keep covering it. is it possible to cover just that white part and leave the other parts uncovered?

Carotid Artery Severed

Hi guys and gals, Newb here who is interested in learning as much as I can just in case I ever need to try to save someone’s life.

I just saw a badge-cam video of a police officer who was responding to a call when he was instantly attacked by an addict high on meth. He had a knife and he sliced through the officer’s carotid artery along with various other injuries but the carotid was, of course, the most serious and critical injury. An armed bystander was able to shoot and end the threat, but he didn’t know what to do to help the officer, and the officer who was first to respond didn’t seem to know either and, sadly, the officer did not survive the attack.

So I’m curious to know if there is some way that one can help someone whose carotid has been punctured/severed. Can you quickly pack it with some sort of gauze, or could you burn and seal the artery? Can you be like Scott from ‘Kentucky Ballistics’ and stick a thumb in it when his .50cal blew up in his face and came extremely close to dying, seemingly saved only by shoving his thumb into his neck wound? His dad was right there filming, so he was able to get him to their local hospital quickly, but had he not managed to stop the blood coming he would have swiftly died no matter how quickly his dad drove.

Is there a way to save someone whose carotid has been severed and they are swiftly bleeding out?

Thanks for your time and thanks in advance for your responses!

Leg wound- infection?

Just barely smells of vinegar, but I've had a bandage on it for a long time twice with no breathing room in between. Looked white in the center, poked at the white bit but it wasn't liquid or anything like pus (can't feel the wound itself, wound is about 4 mm deep)

Infected? Any other opinions on what to do except for keep the wound clean and bandage?

Can I get a CPR/AED card for free?

I want to apply for a personal training certificate and they want me to get a hands on CPR/AED certificate for that. I am wondering does anywhere provide free courses and certificates for CPR/AED?

I would also like to know, if I use this online course https://cpr.heart.org/en/cpr-courses-and-kits/heartsaver/heartsaver-virtual will I receive a regular CPR/AED card/certificate or they mention it in the card that is for online learning?

Exposed to Raid

I bought some Raid ant spray and sprayed it around my kitchen. I stepped on it on the floor and a small portion of it got into my face and mouth. Am I in any danger?

Suspicious bite

This random bite appeared on my hand, I’m concerned if it’s a bat or smth that could be carrying rabies or another nasty disease, not sure if I should have it checked out, or assume it’s a bug bite and carry on

First Aid Kit/s

I'm looking at putting together a first aid kit now my almost 2 year old son is getting about more. Are there any kits you recommend for an at home first aid/out and about kit?

If not what are the must-haves?

I'm used to only really worrying about having a tourniquet and some haemostatic gauze on me at work. I think I'll get something for catastrophic bleeds to keep in the car but I'm lost when it comes to minor injuries, plasters etc...
