Cousins Lyric Cook-Morrissey, 10, and Elizabeth Collins, 8, were abducted near Meyers Lake in Evansdale on July 13, 2012. The girls' bodies were found five months later, on Dec. 5, 2012, in a wooded area 24 miles to the north in rural Bremer County at Seven Bridges Wildlife Area.

No political or religious soapboxing or discussions. There are hundreds of places on reddit to discuss politics or religion. Those are polarizing issues and as such should be avoided on the sub unless they are directly relevant to the post. No soapboxing of any kind is allowed, the two most common forms being political or religious.
Please do not name potential suspects. Naming potential suspects may lead to doxxing, witch hunting, and harassment and the subreddit cannot allow that activity because it's a site-wide rule violation and could be reason for the sub to be shut down.

So I lived about an hour away from Evansdale. I remember seeing flyers for the girls when they first went missing. And really this is the kind of tragedy that just sticks with you. I had to go to Waterloo about two weeks ago. And of course the girls were on my mind and I decided to stop at Angels park. This has lead me into a deep dive of the murders.
I do have to say it’s very well put together. The island is a beautiful way to remember the girls. And I liked that they also put up gazebos for Evelyn Miller and Donnisha Hill. It has a very peaceful feeling which surprised me I guess considering the tragedy on why it’s even there.
But about the trail. Wow! I had no idea just how secluded this end area of the trail is. I walked the whole trail staring at the park and ended up in the a neighborhood. I have so many thoughts. When I got to the area where the girls bikes were said to be found I realized how scary it actually is over there. If someone approached you in this area there really isn’t anywhere to go other than the water or the hwy. Or run like hell all the way around the lake.
I thought maybe just maybe someone driving on the highway could have pulled over and took the girls. Seems unlikely but depending on which side the purse was found I think it could be a real possibility. That was my first thought walking into the gated area.
Then as I was walking through the gated area I realized that it could be that someone knew how secluded that area was and knew they could dump the bikes and purse there without being seen.
But honestly it was scary! I never been on a bike trail where your basically caged in for a good distance while also being completely secluded. And end up in a neighborhood that is still kinda of a little ways from the trail. You can’t see this part of the trail from the park or the neighborhood.
I walked away feeling like it has got to be someone from that neighborhood. It’s the only thing that makes sense to me after walking that trail. It’s really got a feeling of the movie Lovley Bones going on. I fully believe now that some creep who keeps to themselves that lives in that neighborhood has gone under the radar.
I’ve read all the theories in the past two weeks and even though there’s a few that hold weight after being there myself I don’t think I’ll ever believe it was anyone but a local who happened to have a slick opportunity to be a complete monster and acted on it.
A new video uploaded to TheInquisitor's YouTube channel shares information about a potential involved parties in the girls' disappearance. This content creator frequently takes down videos and disables comments, so it's very difficult to ask questions or discuss the videos. There are names shared only by initials, but it seems there's public/online information disclosing the full names. I am including images of possibly relevant screenshots included in the video. There was no specific context provided about the images, so I am curious what you all make of it. Below is the transcript from what was narrated in the video:
Dan Morrissey, the father of one of the Evansdale victims Lyric cook Morrissey was allegedly given information about others involved who were producing and distributing methamphetamine.
In February 1999, 21-year-olds "JHM" and Misty cook were pulled over when officers recognized the man with the initials JHM and knew his license was suspended, later finding methamphetamine in the car.
On one evening around 11:00 p.m. in July 2023 the brother of JHM, "DM", went to Drew Collins’ home, the father of victim Elizabeth Collins, and said that he threw Elizabeth's purse over the fence, which was found by the fence near where the bikes were found on the Southeast end of the trail by Meyers Lake close to Arbutus Drive.
DM said his son, “J”, and his brother, JHM, were involved in their abduction and murder.
DM handed a journal to Drew Collins and said his son, J, wrote details about the crime inside it and he told Drew about JHM's connection to Lyric Cook Morrissey's mother, Misty Cook.
DM said he told the police about the journal and that JHM and his son, J, were involved in the crime, but he said they turned him away. He said he also told them this story 6 years ago but did not mention the journal.
DM suffered post-traumatic stress disorder in a car crash two years prior to coming in contact with Drew. After DM spoke with Drew, DM went and talked to the police and gave over his DNA.
The theory was that the murders occurred because Lyric’s father, Dan Morrissey, was an informant for the cops in relation to methamphetamine distribution and had given over names to the police to get those theorized to be involved in trouble.
The investigators did not deem DM credible and that he was mentally unwell.
It is believed the investigators in the Evansdale murders have a profile of the offender or offenders and have an idea of what type of person committed this crime.
It is now 2024 and the victim's families, especially the father of Elizabeth Collins, Drew Collins, have not given up hope and continue to battle on to find out who the perpetrator (or perpetrators) were, who committed such a horrific crime which has destroyed lives and harmed communities.
I realize police never released the cause of death for these sweet girls. Are they also keeping the COD from immediate family, as well ?
I'm seeing articles from 2013 that say he was sentenced to up to 90 years in prison, 30 years minimum. However, in the doc he's clearly out of prison in 2022. I cannot find any other info on how/when he got out of prison.
Has anyone watched this documentary yet? It is on HBO Max, and is three episodes long, about an hour long each. I just finished the first episode. I’m not sure if there will be any new information revealed in it.
I’ve loosely followed this case for years, basically due to my interest in Delphi. Now that Delphi is (hopefully) approaching resolution, I have circled back to Evansdale with a different vibe- If Delphi can be solved, I feel like this case can too! I love that it seems to be getting more attention again.
What are the best resources out there if I wanted to learn more about this case? I have listened to a couple of podcasts through the years (true crime garage and the prosecutors podcast), I’ve also watched the recent HBO doc. Any YouTubers, blogs, journalists, FB groups etc that have followed this case closely?
TIA
I know mistakes happen, but when you’re making a serious documentary, probably should make sure you get dates right. Things happen.
Is there even any Files, Documents, or Reports on this case??? If so, where can I find them??
On the HBO doc, episode 3, around the 47:00 min mark, the family is gathered at the cemetery. They show Lyrics grave and her mother is kneeling down and says “it’s my first time here.” I understand everyone grieves differently, but not EVER going to the final resting place of your child seems unreal. The mother of Lyric, Misty Cook visits her daughter’s grave for the FIRST time, 10 years after she is murdered, with a documentary camera crew present? Am I hearing this correctly, or missing something? Anyone else catch this?
I grew up in Cedar Falls but now live in MS. I saw the HBO series and watched part of it just to see if there were updates or learn what I might not have known since I formally moved in 2009 (I would go back home from time to time during college and the Army). I haven't been back to the area since 2013 when this was still very fresh in the news cycle. If you are local to the area, what do you think is the reason they can't solve it? Or is it solved but they are missing the one piece of crucial evidence to convict? Curious to know what the gossip is.
This is being released today in the US.
I've listened to excellent podcasts about this horrific case by True Crime Garage and The Prosecutors Podcast. Are there any other pods about the case, preferably longer than a half hour quick summary?
Interviews with Drew Collins, and the lead investigator Special Agent Reger for the 12th Anniversary. Drew mentions a new documentary on the case he's involved with.
STILL, the person or persons who did this are free. Living their odious life. Do they know how close we are? Do you worry everyone will see who you really are? Iowa has a new cold case team, and you can bet they are Gunna be on you like flies to feces! Praying it's really soon.
Completely unfathomable to me that we no idea who killed these beautiful girls, yet we do know they had knowledge of both Meyers Lake and 7 bridges. To me that means someone CLOSE. I want closure for Drew and his family.
He says he calls the police weekly for updates, he says he thinks it was a pedophile, he says he thinks it is someone local and he is worried about opening the door at Casey's for the person.
No media coverage. No updates. Killer could still be out killing. I believe the lack of updates and comments by media means they know who is responsible for these murders.
Just wanting to remember both Lyric and Elizabeth and their families at this sad time xx
New to this case. Does anybody have a list of suspects names? Also, does anybody have a map of the lake and trail where the bikes were found?
Lyrics father did not kill his daughter. That being said the vast majority of homoicides are committed by someone known to the Victim. Lyric was the older child and would have been responsible for Elizabeth. If they approached a man it was likely because Lyric had a connection with him. Given the fact that Lyrics father dealt meth out of his home with Lyric present, what are the chances that Lyrics killer WASN’T Someone known to Lyric? Given the lack of previous abduction attempts, the fact that Lyric and Elizabeth were supposedly killed on this same day that they were abducted, and the extremely opportunistic and almost reckless nature of this crime it seems like it may have been committed by someone on Meth. Lyrics father might not even know or have any idea, this might just be some junkie who saw lyric on a drug deal and built up enough rapport for her to go with him.
If I recall correctly, the police in this case gave polygraph tests to family members and others in order to prove them innocent. Does anyone know more about exactly how much the Polygraph was used in this case and if it was the basis for excluding suspects? We know now that polygraph tests are unreliable, its possible that police excluded a potential suspect based on an inaccurate test.
Given the fact that the girls were seen in the road after noon, but disappeared shortly after, it’s possible that their abductor saw them in the road while driving and then decided to act. Given area and timeframe, maybe the culprit is a worker who’s shift ended at roughly noon, who then drove home using Evan’s Road to access intestate 380. This is just a theory, but does anyone know more info about the specific roads and what kind of people would be traversing the area at noon?
I was reading an article about a delivery driver accidentally hitting a girl with his van, and abducting and murdering her in a panic. Given the fact that Lyric and Elizabeth were last seen riding their bikes in the road, a traffic accident would be feasible. The girls were on a trip that was completely unplanned, so its unlikely someone could have been targeting them. If the killer was someone planning on kidnapping girls, why would they target 2 children together who were mobile with bikes, (grab one Child the other speeds off faster than you can run). Now this is complete speculation but since Lyric was older, a cheerleader a gymnast and from a somewhat broken home, I think it’s likely she would be very protective of Elizabeth, and probably felt mature enough to loudly attack someone who might’ve hurt Elizabeth. My theory is that they encountered their killer via a traffic accident (not necessarily a fatal one, but maybe enough to have Elizabeth crying or Lyric yelling at him) then their killer abducted them in a panic, killed them and disposed of them in the wildlife preserve. What do you guys think?
Powerful and deeply moving documentary filmed last year for the 10th Anniversary of Lyric and Elizabeth's disappearance.
