Weird thing for me to say but I love Eurovision/NF entries with long titles, this is one of the weirdest reasons why I love Sanremo, it's because there will be at least 2-3 songs with titles as long as that town name in Wales (La rabbia non ti basta, Cosa ti aspetti da me, Un milione di cose da dirti, etc)
However, until Estonia saved this craft this year, I feel like the craft of having long titles have been dying recently.
Like Sweden went from Det börjar verka kärlek banne mej (1969) to You (2013). Germany went from Man gewöhnt sich so schnell an das Schöne (1964) to Sister (2019). etc.
2022 felt like the song titles felt very short (Intention, Sentimentai SloMo, etc.) Even Pesma za Evroviziju, an NF known for having a few songs with long title was affected this year ("Nemoguca misija" was the longest title this year.)
What happened to long titles? Why do you think are song titles getting shorter? and will long titles ever make a renaissance again after Estonia this year?
I’ll start:
2016 in a small Chinese town in the centre of China, a store was playing 2014 Denmark “cliche song”
2024 - in a circle K store in Vietnam, Armenia’s Rosa Linn 2022 song “snap” was playing.
New Music Friday is our weekly thread dedicated to new music releases by past Eurovision and National Final contestants.
This is a place to share, discuss and celebrate these artists’ latest releases following their time in the contest.
Feel free to share singles, albums, collaborations, or covers, as well as any opinions and thoughts you may have about them.
Happy listening!
I would like you all to mention cases of a Non-Eurovision song that you wish was sang by a Eurovision related act.
One example for me would be Dadi Freyr singing The Hoosiers' 2010 hit Choices, as it is a wacky keytar-driven synthrock song about mindless conformity with a humorous music video. I'm not sure how his baritone fits with the vocal style of the Hoosiers' vocalist, but it would be iconic.
I am also sure that Big Enough by Kirin J Callinan was the best song that Keiino never did, if you replace Jimmy Barnes' screams with joik solos.
I also want to apply Joker Out to every britrock song I liked from 2004-2007, like with Kaiser Chiefs, Hard-Fi, Pigeon Detectives, Paddingtons etc (like I predict A Riot or Living For The Weekend, also think of them as Pete Doherty without the Drugs) and Athena Manoukian to many hip-hop-soul songs (I have repeatedly compared Chains On You to Little Mix's Joan Of Arc - being a big fan of Little Mix back in the day was a key driver in my obsession with Athena).
What cases can you make?
What are we expecting for Basel 2025? This could be ideal hosts, interval acts, etc. Sound off and let your voices be heard.
Besides the actual staging (props, etc.) I feel like a crucial aspect when it comes to the visual aspect of the performances is the camera work. The examples pictured are just some of the few that I thought of when solely considering the camera work
I'm specifically asking for songs that are on your day-to-day playlists or the ones you'd willingly put on at any point of the day - not just the ones you won't skip if they happen to play somewhere. Also, I don't mean songs that you just "like" or "appreciate". It's about the songs you enjoy enough to come back to them on regular basis
A while ago I've realized that I probably don't have any pre-2001 Eurovision songs on any of my playlists and I kind of want to listen through the older performances to make sure if there's something for me over there. And I'm curious if other people have that "issue" too :D
So, they already filmed the 2024 JESC postcards, and woah.
First of all, I'll talk about the main issue: AI.
AI, for this year, has been used for Estonia and Germany's staging backgrounds, and i think some other nations too. And mainly, the logo. You see, these are like carnation flowers that sadly look remarkably artificial. Like, they look like they're blooming out of themselves, which doesn't happen in real life. The petals on them are also problematic.
As some might know, i LOVE art, and i'm planning on being a graphic designer and animator, and seeing AI time and again makes me angry. Like, it doesn't even look like a human wouldn't make art like this. Also, i found out they're making specialized robots for different things people can work on!
And the postcards now.
Thus, i saw in sources from YouTube and Instagram talking about the postcards and also revealing part of them, and these will be about (SPOILER): >!the artist walking on a green screen and later finding a remote making an AI-generated avatar for them.!<
With the formation of AI in this content, it was actually an obvious one. And the comments were saying it was awful, cheap and worse than others. And i heard others saying that the whole postcards for this edition will be dreadful.
Honestly, i don't know what to say.
Does anyone have a setlist or playlist based on the setlist and order of performers? Any city would be great, as I imagine each city had a similar run.
Had an incredible time last night in Brisbane. The singers, dancers, song choices, and production were absolutely outstanding, and we were all singing our hearts out and dancing the night away. All the performers were lovely during meet & greet. Hoping to keep the magic alive with a playlist! I hope they continue Eurovision On Tour and Australia continues to be blessed with ESC goodness.
Edited to add: We also loved the addition of Eurovision tidbits such as the theme song intro, sort-of flag parade and postcards. Made it really special, especially as it's so expensive for us to attend real Eurovision in person.
All of the examples pictured are just some of the first ones that came to mind.
First of all I just want to preface that my thoughts concerning the contest & everything surrounding it do change drastically every few months, however my opinion mentioned in title has stayed consistent ever since I first went back to listen to all the individual years.
In my opinion the 2005 contest just has a great combination of genre diversity, some being hip hop, glam rock, folk & girl bops (not an actual genre but it kinda is in the ESC canon lmao) & an overall decent song quality. Especially when comparing it to other editions of the 00's, it does stand out quite a bit.
Greece - My Number One : Obviously this kinda is the ultimate girlbop of the 00's & I think it still holds up as a solid winner.
Romania - Let Me Try : The performance & song start at a 10 almost immediately & it still just keeps on going after that. While the actual song might be slightly dated, it's the performance that remains mesmerizing to me.
Hungary - Forogj Világ : The performance including a traditional Hungarian folk dance paired with a folk song that still sounds relatively current is more than impressive to me. Kinda one of the entries that makes me miss Hungary's presence at the contest.
Serbia - Zauvijek Moja : This song might just be a guilty pleasure of mine since I have a thing for almost any Balkan-adjacent at Eurovision lol
Honourable mentions:
Switzerland - Cool Vibes
Norway - In My Dreams
UK - Touch My Fire
Lebanon would have done more than decent & it's a shame they haven’t come close to competing ever since that year.
Even non-qualifiers like Bulgaria (Lorraine) or Slovenia (Stop) had some decent songs.
Genuinely interested if it is a common opinion shared in this sub that somehow went unnoticed by me or if y'all have a drastically different point of view.
