You know, I can’t say I’ve ever really enjoyed a Xmas dinner, probably the best one I’ve had was once when I went to the Bottle Hall (sadly now closed) boozer and had Xmas dinner there, was 3 solid courses, proper meat and veg rather than aunt Bessie, and a fair few pints of lager to wash it all down.
That was back in the 90s, but what I’d rather have for Xmas dinner is either a big curry (say naga chilli chicken, mushroom rice, onion bhajis, Bombay aloo and Peshawari naan, or steak n chips n mushrooms n onion rings (a big 32 ounce sirloin with plenty of fat, can’t be doing with fancy fillet with no fat on)
So what will be on the table for me is bloody old turkey, roast taters, Yorkshire puds, pigs in blankets, stuffing, honey parsnips and a boat of gravy, it’s ok and not that I’m not grateful as there’s starving children in Africa but it’s not my cup of tea, sitting bloated all afternoon and tired, falling asleep during my favourite Midsomer Murders.
What about you lot? Are you having what you really want for dinner? Or going along with whatever and giving it a 6/10 afterwards?
Hi all.
I went to the communal bins earlier, at around 10am, when I'd slung my Tesco bag in general waste I came back outside to see Monica standing outside her flat, she was staring at the path outside in horror.
I went over and said "alright Mon how's it hanging?", she was as white as a sheet and said "morning Sid, look at this marking outside my flat"
I looked close and it was 2 small yellow painted arrows, pointing towards her front door.
She said "I've been looking on NextDoor Sid, a woman was saying she's had this sort of thing painted outside her place, and she's worried sick that she'll be burgled"
I said "I'm not sure about this Mon, why would they advertise it? Or why while they're there don't they just burgle you"?
She thought and nodded and said "you could be right Sid but I don't like it"
I nodded and said I'd ask on here what people think, and if they've had similar painted outside their house and if they've been burgled or terrorised.
Thoughts? Is Mon right to be worried? The woman on NextDoor is frightened out of her wits about her paintings outside her house, or is it all guff like I said and nothing to worry about?
does anyone know of any big hills in essex or close to essex where i could do so?
So strange one, I work for a restraunt/bar in thurrock and we are looking for someone to host an open mic.
If anyone is interested or could help let me know.
Hi all, with the weather turning slightly colder (it’s nice today mind, lovely and sunny and no need for a coat, I’m just in me grey joggers and grey hoody) I need some suggestions for walks for me and little dog.
He’s a dear little Poochon, 9 years old, and he loves a good 2 hour walk with his dad (me), I’m thinking mid to north Essex as we don’t mind driving a bit to find a decent walk.
We’ve been doing the same routes since lockdown now, and I can tell by his little face that he’s getting a bit fed up with them.
Any ideas?
Hi all,
I'm looking at property to buy with my partner in Chelmsford, we had a viewing and really liked the house. When we were doing further research about the area and where it was in relation to everything, it looks as though it's on the southern part of the Westlands estate. We went through the subreddit a few times and most posts basically said avoid at all costs.
I play golf pretty locally to it but don't know an awful lot about it outside of that. Just wanted to know if anyone had any extra information about the surrounding area, the road it's on is Writtle Road. We were hoping that it would be far enough outside of the estate that we wouldn't have any issues with it.
Morning. Just wondering which suppliers you guys use for firewood in the South of the county (or county-wide) and are reasonably priced?
My bike was stolen from Essex University. It was my dad's who recently passed away. I would be extremely grateful for any information to help me retrieve the bike. Thank you in advance.

Hello - can anyone recommend a Thai restaurant in Essex that does kaho soi? Ideally a sit-in restaurant as it's my partner's birthday and we're looking to reminisce from our time in Chiang Mai. TIA
I used to think they were a right bunch of knobs, until one auditor went to a place I used to work at.
It was hilarious seeing an ex boss made to look a blithering idiot, the auditor rang rings around him and made him look a proper pompous clown.
Hi guys,
First of all before I get “it’s planes” I’ve been checking FlightRadar and this is happening when there is nothing above me in Basildon.
For about the last four weeks every night between 6pm and 7pm I get these craft fly above the area of my house for a good few hours. They look a lot like drones but there can be up to 10/11 and it’s every night.
Please tell me someone knows what they are and why they are out every night as it’s driving me mad??
I have been quoted £2000 for one new aluminium window 1450mmx 920mm . Is this really how much aluminium windows costs to supply and fit ?
Hi all.
Teenage daughter wants to see a play. She's quite into crime thrillers but any drama will suffice. I've looked into some theatres but they all seem to be 90% tribute bands.
Can anyone recommended anywhere? Even am-dram. I know I could pop into London but that isn't always practical.
Thanks in advance.
i've never been to Grays, but ever since i got the job offer i've been googling about it... there's barely any info, and what little there is, is pretty daunting. is it really that bad?! what are some good neighborhoods to live in? or do you recommend renting somewhere near instead? are there any other means of transportation into london besides the c2c? (besides car/bolt etc)
Awight?
So I hear it’s been snowing up north in the land of the flat caps and whippets, a fair bit in some places by all accounts.
So where are you and what’s the weather doing?
Chelmsford and slashing down at the mo, mostly sleet.
Just saw a low speed car accident on the Broomfield rd, a car hit the arse of another one going about 1mph, no damage but they’re blocking the road and being annoying.
It’s days like these when I wish I had an old school outside brazier, sitting outside warming my paws, and doing toast over flames like it should be done.
Hey all,
I usually get my parents a £100 gift voucher towards a restaurant that’s a bit more pricey / considered a treat than their usual casual places as their Christmas gift.
For the last 3 years, I’ve given them one for Alec’s, Smiths of Ongar and Taz. So I’m looking for suggestions for something along that level.
I was thinking Dog and Pickle for this year but I’m not overly familiar with them and the menu isn’t really selling it to me. They like most food but was probably thinking along the lines of seafood, British, Italian or Turkish, but happy for all recommendations!
We are based Chelmsford/ Loughton but happy to travel around. They are late 40’s if that’s any relevance and not overly put off anything that’s on the trendier side!
Thank you! ☺️
Are there any folks who meet up to work out early mornings, 6:30am in Basildon area? I’m down for a month from December and don’t want to loose a great routine I’ve gotten into.
Happy to sign up to a local gym for a month.
Or are there any people who are willing to join in. Happy to do CV, Circuits, Hyrox etc or callisthenics based workouts. Not really into lifting weights.
hi.
i live in essex. im looking for things to do in a couple weeks time, on the weekend. as far as i can tell there is basically nothing to do in this entire county except for colchester zoo.
for reference, im a student and my friend is coming over of a similar age. we have met up a few times in london and gone to concerts, watched movies etc however i'm not sure there's much of anything happening in essex.
looking online makes me want to cave in my own skull (one list of 'things to do in chelmsford before you die!!' had 1. drive over a roundabout flyover' so these lists are no use).
if anyone has ideas that are affordable for a student and also fun for someone of my age (please, no museums on obscure stuff) that please do let me know.
Hi everyone I’m in need of some advice I travel on train from London to Colchester for uni pretty regularly, this can get quite expensive especially in the mornings. I buy my ticket from the station in London which probably doesn’t help, what’s the cheapest alternative? Maybe a monthly ticket?
Edit: I should have added I already have a 16-25 rail card
Edit 2: Thanks to everyone who replied I found a solution!
Hiya, I'm looking for someone I can regularly play/practice tennis with as I'd like to progress rapidly and make a few more friends who play tennis. Would be happy to meet for drinks or something first. Send a dm if interested!

Growing up in a working class household meant tipping other tradesmen, my old chap and mother would tip the hairdresser, waiter or waitress and give out a Christmas box to the postie, dustmen, and window cleaner.
Now I do the same, I always give the hairdresser a tenner for my £8 haircut, I’ll give the dog groomer £40 for my little angels £35 haircut, if I ever eat out which is very rare nowadays with the cost then I’ll give the waiter or waitress a £2 coin.
At Christmas I give the dustmen a crate of beer, they always appreciate a nice case of Guinness, I don’t have a window cleaner as I do it myself, and I certainly ain’t tipping the postie as he’s a bundle of misery, I’ve corrected him a few times when it came to mislaying a gadget he used to have, he’d leave a £1000 gadget on top of his trolley and he didn’t like me telling him to keep it with him at all times.
Anyway, do you lot hand out a Christmas box? And I’ve always called it a Christmas box as I grew up in the Norfolk fens and we call a gift a box.
Hello! My husband and I are thinking of moving to Saffron Walden.
Looking on the map it seems to be quite close to Stansted. Looking further it seems to be under one of the arrival paths (following flight radar tonight I’ve seen lots of plane fly directly over). Does anyone know how loud the planes are? Can you hear them in the town? Are these disruptive?
I used to live in Hammersmith and Battersea and did find the Heathrow flight path a bit disruptive in the summer as I couldn’t sleep with the windows open/you would have to stop conversations when outside and a large plane was passing.
Any thoughts would be appreciated!
