"In times of stress and danger such as come about as the result of an epidemic, many tragic and cruel phases of human nature are brought out, as well as many brave and unselfish ones.”

Welcome to /r/Epidemic. This subreddit is dedicated to the discussion and following of past or present biological threats to humankind. These can include:

  • Current Outbreaks and Pandemics
  • Historic Outbreaks and Pandemics
  • Biological Warfare or Terrorism

The rules of the subreddit are as followed:

1. Fear mongering will not be tolerated

Discussing potential outbreaks are allowed and encouraged, but outright fear mongering will not be permitted and will lead to a ban. Panic can create more damage than actual pandemics.

2. Spamming is not allowed

Minor outbreaks occur all over the world all the time. Spamming them will not garner more attention, besides that of the mods. If a larger outbreak or epidemic should garner more attention, we will create a megathread for it.

3. Be kind

We are discussing topics that could be potentially sensitive to those around us. If someone is afflicted with a disease or virus, we must acknowledge the situation they are in and be courteous.

4. No brigading or harassing other locations/subreddits

5. Please provide context for discussions

Finally, a big thanks to /u/EpidemicBilly for granting us control over this subreddit. Thank you very much!

How big is the possibility of a pandemic / epidemic developing because of hunting?

I read some articles recently about the relative likelihood of a new virus developing in wild animals and then spreading through hunters… and now I’m veeery worried because I’ve got some hunters in my family, see them quite often and I’m pretty sure they don’t really care about hygiene after dealing with dead animals. Could anyone give me an evaluation about how worried I should be? How big are the chances? It’s mostly wild boar and deer, and we are in germany in case it depends on the climate zone.

How big is the possibility of a virus spreading through raw meat (in this situation)?

Hi there, I hope this is the right place to ask! I’m extremely worried right now and since I don’t know how to start researching about this (because it is pretty specific) I thought I’d consult Reddit. My father is a hunter and regularity cooks the meat he got himself or from another hunter. He just did so today. Throughout the whole process, I don’t think he used soap once, just some water for washing his hands. But he touched everything in the kitchen and prepared the meat directly on the kitchen counter and only wiped it with water afterwards. I’m feeling very uncertain about the safety of this, especially since I remember in the movie Contagion, the outbreak started pretty similar. Unfortunately, I can’t really talk to him about this, because I know he’d get annoyed instantly and wouldn’t care (we’ve had similar talks before). I’d be very glad if someone could give me some input about the possibility of this and a possible approach on my side. Thank you in advance!
