So, you just made a post/video/article about how El Salvador is so awesome/promising, etc. …

Congratulations on enjoying El Salvador! It's a beautiful country with a lot of nice people, beautiful environments, awesome food. Hope you can come back again and have an equally awesome experience. Finally, thanks for taking time into editing/filming/writing, etc. and sharing it with the community….

But you’re getting downvoted and everyone is listing why you’re wrong, why the country sucks, and this train of negativity is something you did not expect. What happened? You just wanted to share your positive experiences in this lovely country!

Several things happened, in no particular order:

- It should be evident that a short leisure stay is not the way in which you’ll get a profound understanding about the challenges of living in ES in the long term, the aspirations of the common folks and overall, you just won’t get it by just going to places designed and advertised to attract foreign tourists.

- You want to extend your enthusiasm and positivity from your pleasant experience into the bright promising future of El Salvador ® And that’s just not that simple. Yes, there are significant improvements, people feel safer than before from the threat of gangs, there’s plenty of new infrastructure and a really awesome ‘president ‘ (technically he isn’t as of April 2024, but rule and law are no longer applies here). But when you go outside of the main tourist areas and the capitals, you’ll find a lot of areas forgotten by this and former governments. You’ll find that people rather than being weary of gangs, are now weary of the police and the military, because there’s a lot of innocent people behind bars captured and imprisoned without a trial. You’ll see schools without electricity and/or running water, housing prices out of control, which makes it impossible for the average earner in ES to buy a house. About 85% of Salvadorans don’t earn $400.00 and you see house prices of over $150,000.00 and way, way more. The economic realities of the country are just not in favour of the average people and is difficult to see a positive horizon in the short to intermediate term.

- You had a great experience with informal sellers, and you even bargain a bit, that’s awesome! But just reminding you that the seller, in many cases is in a very vulnerable position, in which they’re selling not exactly as way to increase their wealth, but more like a means to survive. As in, if they don’t sell on that day, they may not have food that night. This is clearly not the case for all sellers, but this example is very, very common, and romanticizing your pleasant experience might rub people the wrong way. Just, you know, don’t romanticize poverty and precariousness.

- You have no idea how much I love when an ignorant white person/foreigner with a very misplaced sense of confidence, comes here and tells this sub just how great an awesome the country is and how we’re just a bunch of negative Nancys. It reeks of ‘white saviour complex’.

- There’s an immense propaganda apparatus by the current government which is actively selling an idea that our country is in the horizon of becoming the Singapore of Latin America ®, and promoting a bunch of things for rich people, like bitcoin, bitcoin city, surf city and a bunch of crap that looks good from afar, and I imagine it must work decently well if you want to contribute to gentrifying a country. All these things make for pretty videos, but keep in mind there’s plenty of propaganda embedded on all of these things.

Just some thoughts, don’t take it personally, glad you enjoyed the country, but maybe be mindful of how much you’re willing to extend your reasoning and limited experience. You must definitely don’t know as much about the country as you think. Be humble.

I solo traveled to El Salvador at 19 years old and I am SHOCKED at how I have fallen in LOVE with this country. Genuinely my favorite country I have ever been to! What are you most optimistic about for the future?

Looking for critical thinkers

Calling all critical thinkers and those with special interests!

I have made it a mission of mine to be in every reddit sub for every nation on the earth (or at least the ones in english).

I am trying to gauge interest in any who wish to bring their passion and knowledge in a category to join a groupchat (on the dinosaur of a platform known as Facebook).

What im looking for and why:

My whole life ive been interested in different countries and cultures and the idea of having an 18+ groupchat in which many nations have a bit of representation its a dream come true. Id love to have people who are educated and capable of deep discussion about various topics.

Criteria

  1. Have a special interest in any field politics, philosphy, history, heck even those proficient in film music or theatre.

  2. You can take a joke. Its a fairly on task group chat however id say the only stuff that is censored as far as words go is any words pertaining to race or explicitly sexual material.

  3. You are respectful of different religions. The group chat is very commonly excercising various different belief standpoints and jokes as long as they are in good taste are perfectly acceptable

What to expect:

  1. Debates: these can range in a variety of topics from politics to history to science. And they can border on "heated" but at the end we are all just trying to learn and any oversteps will result in bans after a warning if course

  2. Varied religious backgrounds id say the group is about 65% Christian 35% atheist but everyone in there is comfortable with sharing details about their religion free of ridicule aside from the lighthearted jokes. We have also recently added some others majority of which are Muslim.

  3. The group right now is majorly american but there has been a fair bit of canadians that have joined and left over the three years the groupchat has been around. We recently got some members Azerbaijan, Bahrain, and Germany

  4. Right now we have experts in the following categories

Cryptocurrency TV Shows and Pop culture Philosophy American Law World History Military History Video Game History Meteorology

The group is probably like 45% autistics with special interests so we pride ourselves on knowing our craft.

  1. Each month I post news articles from every nation's internet news source in alphabetical order usually a letter a day. And we monitor and disccus the conflicts happening abroad

  2. The group is 100% male which wasnt even by design thats just how its gone so far but there isnt a gender requirement one way or the other.

The donts:

No excessive meme spam. I tend to allow discussions with GIFS but depending on how many join the chat, theres no need for excessive memes

No posting sexual or graphic material some mems walk the line but never cross it.

No racial slurs

The creator of the GC is the final authority on everything

The point of the GC is to engage and have fun. If somebody is going a month without at least reading the posts then you shouldnt have joined in the first place silly! Inactives are often removed after one month.

Lets educate eachother! The goal is to increase comradery and learm about eachother cultures.

As of right now im wanting natives to whatever nation I post this in (as I intend to copy and paste) and depending on traction Im going to try and invite either the first people who respond or the most educated.

If you want to leave a rude comment or something about how you have better things to do go ahead! This is reddit after all!

But at least for the sake of being entertaining lets avoid repeats so far ive heard

Incelfest

Sausagefest

Pretentious

Arrogant

Red pills

Sounds like Hell

Remember we are looking for people who want to make friends and debate ideas not people who think themselves witty comedians.

Just got back from a few days in beautiful El Salvador

I drank the bottled water and tried to avoid salads but some of the bacteria got into me and is affecting my delicate american belly....how many days until this 'montezuma's revenge' passes?

Can I access car rental booths from outside of the airport.

I'm going to El Salvador for A month. But for one week I will have my entire family and we will have a Microbus rented. But after the week I will be taking the rest of the family to the airport to come back to the USA but I will be staying.

So I wanted to rent a small car at the airport as I've done before. But from my understanding you can only access the rental booths when you're arriving from a flight. Is there any other way to access that area of rentals?

Or does anyone know of a good rental company near the airport with a website I could look at?
