I stay in Edinburgh every year in December for one night. Usually a Premier Inn along the tram line and never paid over £80 for this
This year I’m heading up on Nov 16th and all hotels seem to have nearly doubled in price??
Anyone know anywhere cheap to stay in or just outside the city?
Anyone know of any local-ish Farm shops that have fresh milk?
We were in Leven a couple weeks ago and were able to get milk from a vending machine with different flavours that my daughter loved but I can't find anything closer?
Thanks!
What the hell was that all about ? Just outside St James Centre I see them standing all together with their TVs and masks with animals dying on them. I get they shouldn't be treated that way but wowww
I’m originally British (from London) but lived in nyc the past 6.5 years and considering accepting a decent and stable job offer up in Edinburgh…. Need help deciding
This is a hyper specifc long shot, but on Thursday 31st was anyone approached by a photographer by the name of Cynthia? She was around St Giles Cathedral and was after some people to take photos of for a project she's working on.
Me and my partner had just gotten engaged the day before and we would love to see the photos. Now I have no idea if she meant she'd send them in a raw format or edited, but she'd mentioned she would get them sent across the same night, which honestly I appreciate she just may not have had a chance/no idea if my email was noted correctly by myself. It's a stab in the dark as to whether anyone has any clue, but on the off-chance I gave incorrect details and we could still see how the photos turned out it would be so appreciated.
Hello, Living in Edinburgh and Specifically asking for advice from those in the Edinburgh area.
I've decided on a career change and am exploring how to get started in Hairdressing after it being a long time passion.
With research I can see that my options are Level 3 NVQ award in Hair and Barbering (12 month course) or In salon apprenticeship.
Can I combine both?
If anyone with experience in Edinburgh or knowledge give me advice on what is the best path to follow to start my professional hairdressing career?
Thank you in advance :)
Moderators please don't delete this one, I really need the advice!
This is my first Bonfire Night since moving to Edinburgh, and I am wondering what kind of thing people usually do on November 5th in Edinburgh. I am not from Scotland, or the UK, so I’m not sure how big of an event it is. Is it more of an English thing than Scottish? Is there anything usually going on in the city? I tried looking online but I can’t see much.
Here, if ye're bored (VERY bored), the latest season of the Simpsons has just come out on Disney+. It's BRUTAL but episode six (edit - eight) features the family visiting Scotland and Edinburgh. This episode is also brutal - I'm amazed at how bad it is and tired all the actors sound- but it got the smallest of smiles out of me. A bit like the Avengers scene set in Waverley. Maybe just watch the Edinburgh bit and then go back and watch the Hank Scorpio episode.
SCORPIO!
We rent a typical tenement flat and have been notified by IQA Elecnor Group (on behalf of SP Energy) that they will be installing electrical mains in our building.
The letter says we need to give them access to our flats while the power is shut off from 8am-4pm, otherwise our power will remain switched off until the next day. We’re on the top floor so I assume we’ll be last.
This takes place on a Monday. At first I assumed I wouldn’t need to be at home, so I thought I could just take my laptop to the library for the day and work from there. Or I could’ve taken the day off to do something fun, like visiting Glasgow.
Are we really expected to take a day off from work to sit in the dark and cold at home with no internet, etc? Or does this type of service get done a lot faster than they’re saying in the letter?
Basically, I would like to know how long it took for other people for this kind of service / what you did about work obligations.
Can anyone recommend anywhere in Edinburgh to get a proper lamb doner kebab?
I'm a total doner meat snob so I'm meaning somewhere that actually makes their Doner in house that has the lovely intermittent stacking of meat and fat.
Please help as I'm craving one terribly
This might be the dullest question ever asked, however I’ve noticed there are now ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras at the Gyle. The signs state they’re purely for data collection, however does anybody know if they’re issuing overstay fines etc.?
Used to be a good cheeky place to park for the tram (despite the never-enforced 4 hour car park limit)
Hi All,
I'm making a documentary on the US Election for the Student Newspaper at UOE and wondered if anyone knew of places showing the US election (apart from Dropkick Murphy's), including pubs, other venues, or even watch parties at houses and such?
Really keen to meet anyone who's interested in the election and talking about it, especially if you're at an event and have a vested interest.
Let me know,
Cheers
Hello,
I am new to Edinburgh, just moved about 2 months ago. I am looking for a good Chiropractor in the city. Preferably moderate price, and with a female practitioner.
Been having some neck pain, back and shoulder and would like a nice crack on that.
If possible, please share the name of the clinic and your experience !
im kind of an autistic housecat and i just moved here recently so i dont really explore as much as i probably should, and the only places i can see that sell plaid or tartan in general are touristy knick knack shops around leith street/south bridge/princes street?
so is there anywhere away from the more touristy bits that might be my personal plaid heaven?
thank you in advance!
They are coming. They are coming.
Hi, I'm a student with a really low budget and I'm new to the city. Does anyone know a place that does perms for women at a cheap price? Thanks.
We have (at least) 3x AirBnBs operating in our block of 8 flats.
On the STL register spreadsheet, I see 3 are listed an I interpret the status’ as meaning they are approved.
Meanwhile on the planning site, I only see 1 attempt at change of use, to a STL, which was rejected.
So my questions:
Sincerely, a neighbour tired of the constant noise from airbnbs above and below me
My commute home to Leith from my work in Holyrood is on the 35.
I get on at Canongate Kirk, where the Venn diagram of tour buses running one per minute and almost entirely empty combines with tour parties of twenty at a time waiting at bus stops.
Are the tourists in the tourist buses?
Are they fuck.
I know I choose to live in a DisneyWorld city that attracts these wanks like flies, but is there another city other than Edinburgh where the tourists make living here (as someone funding the infrastructure) a second class citizen.
Anyone else sick and tired of this?
What would be a lovely comfy place for a pot of tea and cake and convo near Waverley without breaking the bank?
I'm about to place an offer for a house I used to live in as a renter, just in front of the Lidl at Haymarket/Dalry road. It's a duplex flat and the price is quite high (400+).
One thing that's making me nervous are all the developments going on at Haymarket - like the 300m black glass rectangular buildings that have apartments/hotels + a new hotel being built next to the train station. It'll be my first house and I will live here, but I'm uncertain if the house's value will appreciate in the long term because it seems that the Dalry area is not very popular for housebuying even though it's so close to the city centre.
I'm quite attached to the house and area as I used to live there, but I fear I'm not thinking about this objectively. Are similarly priced standalone houses, even if they're much farther from the city center (I love being able to talk a walk to Dean's village), better as an investment?
Hiya, I'm looking for a sports massage therapist where they actually give really deep tissue pressure massages. Like almost painful but someone who knows what they're doing. I've tried a few but it's always hit and miss, and a lot of them don't really go that hard even when you ask them to. I have some back/muscle pain issues and it's the only thing that helps, any recommendations appreciated!
Haven’t found any yet
I am looking for my first graduate job in marketing and am finding that half the jobs are poorly disguised MLM’s (thanks reddit for the insight). I applied to a Junior Marketing Consultant position at a startup called One Sided Coin yesterday and this morning was invited to an interview. On closer inspection, there’s a few things in the job description and on their website that make me think maybe they are an MLM, such as consistently referencing ‘field marketing’ and ‘face to face marketing’.
Does anyone have any experience with this company that could provide some insight before I waste my time?
See their website linked below:

Thanks!!
Recently moved to a flat in Edinburgh and having real issues with the water quality. Ive never had a problem here before, but now I cant even brush my teeth without developing acne from the tap water. Ive got a shower filter which helps but I cant fit any on the rest of the taps.
Has anybody had a similar experience or tried anything that has worked?
to the person who was dressed up as a dinosaur last night around old town- thank you for making my kids’ night, they were obsessed haha 😄
Hi Redditers,
I am feeling a bit overwhelmed so thought I would reach out to get some local knowledge.
Basically I moved to Edinburgh 2 weeks ago for a new role in a new industry etc. I had to move quite quickly and found a flat in Gorgie which is great location wise but I hate absolutely everything else about it so need to think about moving so I can stop crying each night.
My office is (annoyingly) in Colinton and am generally in the office 3 x a week however I am out and about on site vits all over Scotland a lot and I don't have a car so I need to be close to a train station to do this. But I also need to be able to ideally walk (which I currently do) or bus to Colinton without it taking forever because long commutes are not it.
I would like a location with a bit more going on restaurant and shops wise than what I have now. Other than the giant Sainburys, Gorgie doesn't seem to have a thing (though please correct me if wrong, I haven't explored much!).
I would really like to live in a new build - im currently in a tenement flat and its noisy and grim and last night I had some crack head yabbering on outside at 2am & it sounded like she was right in my room. I just don't like the tenements however I haven't seen many new build complexes over here (in my short time here) so it worries me they just aren't around as much.
I would also like somewhere where I can have some kind of outdoor area (even just a balcony) & somewhere I can keep my bike (either in my own outdoor space OR a complex with dedicated bike storage).
Ideally I'd find a 1 bedroom that suits my requirements for 1k a month however I think for my sanity im happy to up this for the right place.
From what i've heard, Leith sounds great however I just think the commute to Colinton 3 x a week would be so long and do my head in.
If anyone reads this and thinks 'I know the area that ticks a lot of these boxes and she should be focusing her search on' then please comment!
Full disclosure, although not originally from there I have been living in London for the last few years so maybe i've just been spoilt down there with the tubes and new build options (although paying through the roof for it yes) & maybe I just need to adjust my expectations to a much smaller city but I can dream right?
I got a ticket and showed up right when the gates opened. Ended up dipping because it was cold, crowded, dark, and absolutely nothing seemed to actually be happening. Saw a few folks in some decent costumes, that was about it.
Did any of the performances happen?
