Where can you get a quality Christmas pudding in the city? Best store or best restaurant.
Live just off Dalry Road and keep hearing someone shouting Remmyyyy mostly at night time. Who is Remy? What is happening?
Can anyone else hear it or know anything about this?
Hey, there was a lot of issues and conversation around Elfin Square a few years ago. I was wondering how things are now with the property. What experience have people had living in the building? Has anyone recently tried to buy a flat there and are there still mortgage problems coming up when trying to buy? Would anyone still be cautious about trying to buy there?
I'm looking at properties in this area and recently came across the issues with this site so any info on how things are now would be much appreciated!

I've done a search and have found a few helpful posts, but I'm hoping to get some more recent experiences with renting and info about a few neighbourhoods. Apologies if there's already posts that cover this!
TL;DR: Please tell me about renting in Edinburgh in 2024/2025 and tell me about your recent experiences living in the western neighbourhoods around Saughton, Balgreen, Murrayfield, and Haymarket tram stations.
Long version:
My partner and I (30 something professionals) will be moving to Edinburgh from Montreal in July 2025. We've spent several weeks searching the letting websites and getting a feel for what's available. We're particularly eying up the neighbourhoods around Saughton, Balgreen, Murrayfield, and Haymarket tram stops, ideally trying to stay within ~1km-2km on foot of these stops. To paint a clearer picture, we're eyeing up the sort of triangle that formed between Saughton Road in the West and Haymarket in the East, Corstorphine Road in the North and the canal in the south.
We know our likely budget options given work opportunities and what we're looking for in a rental. We'll also be getting a car, so being able to park it reliably would be nice.
For context, we currently live in a diverse 'mixed income' sort of neighbourhood in one of the suburbs of Montreal with a variety of neighbours from professionals, young couples and families, and some less fortunate folks all trying to take advantage of decent rent, and a spattering of homeless types who are present but not really disruptive. It's in the early stages of a gentrification process. We can walk around at any time of the day and feel safe, even when passing by "interesting" characters.
My question(s) for you guys is what should we expect from potentially living in this "Western Triangle" as I've starting calling it around the train tracks, particularly Carrick Knowe, Balgreen and Stenhouse but also surrounding neighbourhoods like Saughton, Slateford, Polwarth, Gorgie, Dalry. I'm aware many of these neighbourhoods probably vary greatly from one another!
Particularly the potentially negative aspects like train frequency and noise, traffic/congestion and noise, potential disruptions and crowds during Hearts and rugby game days, parking a car etc. But also the general feel of these neighbourhoods and what the day to day is like. Anything in particular to be aware of?
And lastly, any recent experiences with rental market? I'm reading and hearing that it can be very competitive and difficult at times, but have also seen rentals listed for weeks and drop in price. I've read it can be more competitive closer to summer, but we hope to avoid that by locking in a rental in the spring before that rush. We're going to have to accept a rental without having visited in person beforehand, so we're trying to do our due diligence (and will still cross our fingers when we eventually pull the trigger.
Thanks in advance!
Can anyone recommend nice places for a drink for 5 30 yr old women along the water of Leith between Leith and dean village. Maybe 1 spot in Leith, 1 halfway and 1 near dean village/Stockbridge? Thanks
Hi so I’m a student and me and my friends are looking for ideally a 4-6 bed flat to rent for the next academic year, specifically in New Town. I’ve been looking on the usual renting sites but was just wondering if there’s any I might not have heard of anyone could recommend? Thanks
I’ve moved to Edinburgh from Australia recently and keen to get involved in social sport but struggling to find anything that isn’t for university students.
I’d be keen on tennis, badminton (any racket sports), indoor or outdoor 5 a side football, or mixed netball. I go to a run club already which is great but after some healthy competition! Planning to join an AFL 9s team when that starts up again.
Would love to hear your suggestions!
As the title says, I was dropping a friend off at the airport drop off zone and when I drove up to the barrier, it just lifted without me doing anything and the display didn't say anything about paying. Was a bit weird so just wondering has anyone had anything similar? And since they'll have my plate on ANPR is there anything I need to do or am I being daft?
Need a recommendation for a big fancy restaurant in Edinburgh city centre for a 60th birthday meal. I did have somewhere booked, but additional last minute guests mean they can't accommodate us anymore. The birthday-person loves places like the Ivy and The Dome so ideally somewhere with a similar atmosphere that can accommodate 12ish people?
I'm looking for the best Roti Canai in Edinburgh. Bonus if they do other good Malaysian dishes, but it's authentic and delicious roti canai that I am really after.
Cheers!
What could be an amazing experience in Edinburgh? It can be anything, a festival, a historical place, visiting a museum.
Something that's (at least somewhat) unique to Edinburgh.
I'm asking out of curiosity, so if anybody wants to share an experience that's no longer available that would be wonderful as well.
Erskine Stewart’s Melville Schools says some families will use food banks as they try to keep their children at the school when the charge starts next month
Bonus point if there is live Music or ceilidh dance. Lively on a tuesday night, where you can hang with new people. Im in my 30s so this age would be great but open to anything really!
Anyone know of any free acting classes in edi?
As title says, does anyone know if Tesco and Lidl will be getting more trees in? Went down at lunch today and nothing there. Thanks.
Anyone else have endless trouble with the 32 bus with the bus tracker near the gyle? I’ve waited 20+ minutes for it to appear, shown on the app as being very close and it never appears, it’s happened a few times now and Imm wondering if anyone else has had similar issues?
I’ve never had problems getting to work in the mornings but coming home it never appears? I’d be quicker walking home
The cafe I work at had two huge planters (about 1 meter tall and 50cm wide) that are kept outside to mark out the outdoor seating. They're both empty and would definitely look better with something in them. The problem is that when I asked the owners if I can plant something in them, they said there's no point because it will only get pulled out and destroyed or stolen (even if it's something simple like some daffodils or nasturtiums). Also the planters are too big and heavy to bring in during the night.
So my question is, are people nicking plants outside businesses that much of an issue in Leith? I did notice that the vast majority of bars and restaurants and whatnot don't have plants outside, however the small gardens outside flats do, so things can't be that bad? Curious to hear what people think, especially if you have/had a business.
It's worth pointing out that I offered to pay for the plants myself, so the owners are not opposed to the idea because of the potential cost.
Also I know it's a bit late in the year but I miss gardening so please indulge my daydreaming.
Anyone got any recommendations for a joiner or handyman who can fix a broken bit of wood on a dormer window? Blew off in the recent winds and looks like it and the same bit on the opposite side are rotten and need replacing.
I’d do it myself, but I’m inept.
I was just wondering if there was a WhatsApp group in Edinburgh or anything that I could join and meet people who are into making music on ableton?
I'm curious about the prevalence of contraflow parking in Edinburgh, even when there seems to be ample space on the streets. It appears that many drivers prefer this method, which creates confusion to me. Are there reasons behind? Am I allowed to do so?
Our democracy is truly in a fragile state.
Hi, Does anyone know any 5 or 7 a side football games in Edinburgh that are kind of a beginner level…? I played football every now and again at school and was never good enough to play for a team so I don’t really want to go to any 5 a side group full of decent players and be made an arse of…
(Also I am 21, so don’t want to be out place at one aimed towards older people)
I am looking for information about a solicitor or law firm that was based on York Place, Edinburgh, around 27 years ago. They dealt with a family estate. I am unsure how long they were located there or if they are still in operation. It is not Campbell Smith. Can anyone help?
Apologies I know it’s not much to go from
Hi all,
I'm looking for second-hand academic textbooks bookshops in Edinburgh. Do you know of any shops in Edinburgh where I can search for some math, psychology and neuroscience university-level textbooks? Thank you very much.
IKEA have stopped selling them unfortunately and the Bethany Caring Trees is all out til mid December. Where is everyone getting theirs this year?
Hi everyone. I need some work done to a tree in my backgreen, and belatedly realised that since the guy last came there is now permit/pay and display parking where I live in leith. He has a van with a trailer attached (for the bits of trees) and the visitor permit t&cs say they can't be used with trailers. The council are being typically unhelpful and suggested he buy a business permit which costs £500 and obviously is not a solution for one day of work. There's pay and display too and I could creatively block it so he could park but again don't know if he'll get a ticket doing so.
I've seen other tradies with trailers parking around here - if this is you how did you do it? Did you just wing it with a visitor permit? Does anyone have any tips? Thanks!
