"New here! Ecstatic Dance DJ & Huna Enthusiast – Looking for Like-Minded Souls 🌿"

"Aloha lovely souls ,

I’m new to Reddit and excited to join this community! My name is Marlesku], and I’m a DJ, Ecstatic Dance facilitator, and a big fan of Huna and Ho'oponopono. 🌺

I love connecting people through music and movement, creating spaces where they can freely express themselves and recharge their energy. My mixes are a blend of meditative sounds, driving rhythms, and energetic beats—everything you need to dive deep and let go.

In addition to music, I’m passionate about the Hawaiian teachings of Huna and Ho'oponopono, which help me find balance and clarity in daily life.

I’m curious to know what inspires you in these areas! How do you bring music, dance, or spirituality into your life?

Mahalo for your time, and I look forward to connecting and exchanging ideas with you all! 💫"

Celtic inspired Samhain ecstatic dance set

Tried something very different for this set and it really kicked off!

Got heavily into my Celtic roots and created a deep, dark, and playful dance journey. Also includes Afrohouse, Middle Eastern, Melodic Techno, PsyTrance! At this time of year, legend has it that the veil between the worlds is thinnest - a liminal state, the borders blur. So I started with the theme of honouring our absent dear ones, then getting into the playful spirit of the Aos Shi - the Fair Folk of Celtic legend, as the tempo ramped up. Featuring live songs from me and Dee, and a performance on the Taus from Avtar Singh. Facilitation included for home practice… Hope you enjoy! 🙏

music licensing for ecstatic dances?

i want to start holding ecstatic dances in my small town (in the UK) and im interested in knowing if i'll need music licensing for them? if so which ones do i need to get? i'm getting confused by the info i'm finding online

basically all of the music i wanna play is not mainstream at all, and don't come from major labels, i really don't have much money so im not that keen in getting a licence (but if i have too i will) as doing these ecstatic dances is more of a passion project than for profit if i'm being honest!

im a complete newb about this so any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Questions: dancing with someone

👋 Hi - I just attended my first ecstatic dance in Oakland yesterday and LOVED it. I feel like even today I'm still riding a high. Anyway, there were a lot of signs about how to respectfully say no to a dancing with someone, but I want to know more about how to say yes?? One of the first things I noticed in the crowd was how many people had professional dance and ballet backgrounds. I saw people dance together and it was hard to even understand how they even moved into the choreography they did: lifting each other, these cool flips and spins - it was amazing. I felt so shy and unsure how to dance with someone, especially all these highly technical looking moves, I didn't really make any eye contact. Is there more I should know about how dancing with someone works? Lol and yes, I am overthinking it 🤣

Māh Ze Tār has been experimenting with creating dynamic traditional eastern music through modern electronic composition. He mixes grooving beats with ancient sounds born from instruments like the Indian Sitar and the Middle Eastern Oud.

Not only is Maz a multi-instrumentalist artist, he has also been designing his instruments since 2012!

The name “Māh Ze Tār” comes from an instrument he inspired, collaborating with a master lutheier in the Czech Republic. The name translates to “strings of the Moon” 🌙 (Mah-“Moon” Ze- “Of” Tar-“Strings”)

I’m so excited to welcome this artist to Ashland! Attune your channel with us Tuesday 10/22 💙While Māh Ze Tār takes us on a sonic journey through the East ⭐️

Breathwork + Ecstatic Dance?

I have started playing ED gigs the last few months and loving it. I also have a friend who is a talented breathwork facilitator and we have started talking about the idea of joining forces and incorporating breath into an ED journey. We are still figuring out how this would flow. Ie; just do the breathwork then dance, or breathing throughout, or both? Has anyone experienced something like this or have any recommendations?

Ecstatic Dance Live Set (House, Techno, Dancehall, Ambient)

Recorded this set precisely a quarter year ago. Please enjoy responsibly 🔊

Legit question for you ecstatic dancers out there. During the set, we ended up meandering into something I'd more squarely call "party" mode. You'll hear it from roughly 1h30' – 2h15'.

Many of my DJ instincts tell me this is exact destination to aim toward, so once we had arrived I was inclined to stay there. However, on reflection I wondered if this is a bit misguided for ecstatic dance, if that more euphoric energy is one of the flavours to bring in, amongst a whole palette of others.

What do you all think?

90 minute playlist

Hey friends. I'm having a hard time finding good ecstatic dance playlists/dj sets so I'm hoping y'all would be open to sharing your favorites! I really love to dance to Deya Dova, Liquid Bloom, Savej, Tipper, beats antique etc. I really appreciate meditation before and after and some heavy funky wibble wobbles in between. I prefer Spotify playlists. Thanks!

Question

I just came back from an AMAZING ecstatic dance session.

During the session, it became a lot so I took a break at the side. I sat down on my knees, closed my eyes and kind of starting meditating. When I opened my eyes, I noticed a girl had laid down very near to me, with her head near my legs. I stayed for a bit with my eyes closed. I feel maybe there was some kind of energy exchange. Has anyone experienced anything like this ?

Any other non-verbal group activities

I love ecstatic dance! I think as someone with social anxiety, it's so healing to be accepted in a space where I don't have to talk , or be anything in particular. I'm wondering if there are any other silent/inclusive group activities like this? Thanks !

NYC ecstatic dance event

Is anyone else planning to go to the ecstatic dance event at Judson church on Tuesday? Or has anyone been before? I’ve never been and am curious who will be there and what to expect!

Semantic drift...what's included in "Ecstatic Dance?" 5Rhythms, contact improv, Biodanza, the French "expression primitive" etc.

This is something I've been thinking about lately, since I'm making a mailing list of ecstatic dance events in my area.

It includes all those other things, but some people might not think of them as "ecstatic dance" (or "barefoot boogie" as it used to be called).

I think of the "ecstatic dance" label being pretty broad, not a specific lineage, but a descriptor of any dance where the purpose isn't to follow specific steps, or "look good," but just surrender to the music and let whatever comes, come.

Someone I know suggested calling it "conscious dance," but I'm not a fan of that term. What does it really mean?

I think of it as "experiential dance," because it's all about the experience. But that term really doesn't roll off the tongue.

What's your opinion? Does it make sense to categorize all those modalities under "ecstatic dance?" Or do you think there's a better term?

The yin and yang of experiential and performative dance

Obviously, the point of ecstatic dance is not to "dance good." It's about dancing your soul. It's not about performance, it's about experience.

And I love ecstatic dance so much. It's the thing that keeps my soul burning. Dance is my main hobby, and most of that dancing is ecstatic dance.

But I dance in other places, too. Partner dancing, street choreo, dance battles, posting dance videos online. Places that are performative, competitive, where you need to show off, "have skills," and "dance good."

They are two very different mindsets. And yet, every time I do either, I have a little bit of the other mindset inside. A little bit of yin inside the yang.

When I'm at some ecstatic dance event, dancing on the floor, letting my heart shine, I'm also trying to "dance good"...to "dance well." To catch people's eyes, to impress them with the fire of my passion. To make their day a little brigher, basically. I'm thinking about moves, techniques, improvising choreography on the spot.

On the ecstatic dance floor, sometimes, I worry about whether I'm taking up too much space. But people are giving me that space. They sense I could use it. They sense I came here to dance hard.

And in those other spaces, those performative spaces, even when I'm dancing "well," I'm also dancing with a bit of wild abandon. People can tell I kind of don't care about anyone else...I'm gonna dance my own way.

So no matter which yin I'm in, I'm always a little yang. I'm always a little outside.

What about y'all? Have y'all ever experienced something like this?

Sharing my set from my favourite dancefloor in the world - Ecstatic Dance UK!

I Included my somatic facilitation and Khavita's beautiful sound healing at the end, so it's perfect for home practice - also listen out for the crowd noise throughout!

A slow, deep, and somatic build on this one, rising up to some huge Afro House bangers, some Celtic folk, Amapiano, belly-dancing tabla, a sneak Major Lazer appearance and some drum and bass belters. Hope you enjoy! 💃🤸🏿💞🪩

Photos at events

I have noticed alot of events near me have a photographer taking pictures which usually end up on social media. There is the option to ask not to be photographed but I cant help but feel most people wouldn't want to make such a fuss.

I feel like the presence of a camera could cause people to feel they can't fully let loose or prehaps become more performative. I personally wish that nobody would take photos or videos but I guess these events want to advertise to attract more people to attend them.

Have other people come across this and how does it make you feel?

Tips for 16 year old going to first dance?

I found a local one that allows people of all ages. Seems like my cup of tea. I don't think etiquette will be hard for me to get the hang of since I already like moshpits and understood those rules pretty easily. Looking for general tips and advice. Even small things. Anything that you think might help me :) thanks.

Also do I have to be religious to go? The one I know about seems to be at a temple and Im worried I might be intruding. Their site says they welcome everyone, but I'm still hesitant.

Edit: also. I know talking is not allowed but what about smiling and laughing? No words. Sometimes it's hard to hold in laughter especially doing somthing that I am enthusiastic about.

My first time doing contact improv

Last night I went to my first Contact Improv class.

People might find ecstatic dance weird, but it's got nothing on contact improv! Going into it, I didn't even realize it's often done without any music. It was very experimental, very playful at times, very interesting.

I liked it, and will definitely go back, but not every week. When I first experienced ecstatic dance I felt like it was something my soul needed...something I'd do every day, if I could. I love the feeling of losing myself to the music, letting the ego go. In contact improv, you're connected to other people in such a raw way. It was hard for me to let the go...the two selves are in such stark focus. But maybe if I keep on practicing, I'll be able to lose myself in the same way.

I'll definitely say, the contact improv jams in Cambridge, MA, USA are a wicked good deal for what they are. It's a $5-20 sliding scale, $10 recommended. With lesson and jam, it's 2.5 hours. Totally worth going even just to watch. Also one on Thursdays at Jamaica Plain.
