News about electric cars and plug-in hybrids

My daughter will start driving soon and will inherit my current ride, a 2009 Ford Edge with a newly rebuilt transmission. I'm ready for a new ride and having a really hard time figuring out what to get, which has led me here.
My average daily drive is 10 to 40 miles round trip. Road trips or long drives would be done in my husband's hybrid, so finding somewhere to charge isn'tan issue. I need an SUV as we have our own pottery business and I have to be able to move a lot of product in plastic totes in my car regularly.
Adding a charger at home would be easy as we already have a 220 outlet in our garage for our pottery kiln.
My questions are: Can I charge outside only? I can't park in the garage due to the above-mentioned pottery. I live in Fort Worth, TX so it's not like it rains often, but would this be a problem?
What to get? My new car budget is $50k. I'd love a Genesis, but they're out of reach unless I go used. Tesla is not an option. I'm really intrigued by the Volvo EX30 and probably like the look of it more than any of the other options, but didn't see Android Auto or ventilated seats (it gets hot here!) listed as features.
I've read good and bad things about the Hyundai Ioniq 5, but I really don't like the look of them... the Mustang Mach E looks okay? I honestly don't know what to look for and haven't been wowed by any. I wish Tesla wasn't... Tesla, ya know?
**Edited to add: what about a PHEV?
Okay, after several attempts and 48 days in service, Tesla agreed to buy-back my M3 performance vehicle. The buy back agreement occurred at the Tigard, Oregon location on 10/31. It is now 52 days later and despite my agreement to their buy-back offer I still don't have paperwork to sign over the car to Tesla. Once the paper work is signed, I will still have wait several more days / weeks before getting an actual check. I have followed up several times and the service manager makes commitments and does not follow through.
Has anyone else had this experience? Does anyone know how to escalate the issue at Tesla? This issue is costing more money (insurance, interest on the principle amount wrapped up in the car) with each passing day.
Hey guys, Having a hard time deciding on an electric vehicle. My wife wants to go cheaper and get an ionic or another vehicle but I am sold on Tesla. Are there any perks of having one or the other.
Looking at buying a plug in hybrid. Would love to go all in on an EV but it's just not feasible for my situation. So what's the cheapest plug in hybrid I can get with AWD?
Hey guys, if you missed it, Blink recently announced its Q3 results— Revenue dropped by 42% (year over year), which wasn’t so great. But on the bright side, it managed to reduce its net loss by over 23% and losses per share by 50%. So, maybe they are finally leaving behind the problems they had a few years ago.
For newbies, in 2020, the media and users accused Blink of having severely damaged or non-functioning Blink chargers. The same year, the company was also criticized for its slow revenue growth compared to the EV industry.
All these issues caused a huge $BLNK drop, and investors filed a suit against them. They have finally agreed to pay a $3M settlement with investors to solve this scandal.
The good news is that even though the filing deadline has passed, it turns out you can still file for it. So, if someone got hit back then, you can check the info and file for payment here.
They’re now showcasing the achievement of 100k contracted chargers, but their financial results weren’t all that impressive. We’ll see if the numbers improve next quarter.
Anyways, what are your bets on it in the near future? And has anyone here been affected by these chargers issues back then? How much were your losses if so?
Hi,
I have spent too much money on my 07 Corolla the last few years and am afraid of something else breaking down, so instead of waiting for Rivian R3; I’m looking to purchase my first used EV (non Tesla and no Bolt because I will be doing multiple road trips a year)
I will start research this weekend and hope to land a good deal for the holidays, or prior to January 20 before an anti-EV tax credit administration takes over.
I’m in MD and found a couple of good deals on:
2022 Kia EV6 Wind, 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5(very close to qualifying for EV tax credit), 2023 Nissan Ariya, and 2022 Ford Mach E.
I understand that the 2023 version for these models will qualify for the tax credit in January, but I’m assuming there’s no large difference between 2022/2023 models. The EV 6 looks nice and it’s the cheapest of them all. Does anyone here own these cars? If so, how has the experience been? Which one will be cheaper to maintain and operate over time? I do have L2 charging in my apartment complex.
Thank you for your advice and help!
Back in 2020, Lordstown Motors emerged as a promising EV startup that would revolutionize electric trucks. But then, it faced serious production problems, SEC charges, CEO and CFO resignations, a 29% stock collapse, and ultimately, bankruptcy.
Check out the full Lordstown downfall story and how NRDE investors can recover their losses now:
Hey guys! Are there any former ZEV investors here? I’ve shared updates on this settlement before, but with some recent updates, I decided to share it again.
For the newbies: back in 2021, Lightning eMotors reported a net loss seven times higher than in Q2 2020, and shortly after announcing a long-term deal with Forest River, they stopped providing financial guidance (quite odd, imo).
This news caused ZEV shares to drop nearly 17%, leading investors to file lawsuits claiming the company overstated its financial health and prospects.
Lightning recently agreed to settle these claims and pay investors $13.35M for the damages.
The good news is that even though the filing deadline has passed, it turns out you can still file for it. So, if you were impacted, check out the details and file your claim here.
Fast forward to today: as you might know, Lightning filed for bankruptcy not too long ago. More recently, Gillig announced they’ve acquired some of $ZEV’s assets and even hired several former Lightning engineering employees.
So, has anyone here invested in Lightning eMotors back then? If so, how much were your losses?
So I bought a 2018 model 3 Tesla this year and this will be my first time ever handling my own taxes. When I do my tax with turbo tax, will there be an option for me to say I own an electric vehicle? Or do I have to fill out a form else where? Thanks ahead of time!
Hi EV folks, I have thought for several years now that I'd like my next car to be an EV. Under somewhat emergency circumstances and not the best timing, that time is now! I had hoped to buy a Tesla but that doesn't seem within reach and I don't want to go into a huge amount of debt to get there. I'm hoping for some solid recommendations for dependable used EV's that I could realistically find in my area at or under $10k. My commute is currently minimal (around 10 miles round trip) and when my husband and I travel, we tend to either rent or use his car so I don't think range is a huge consideration, but it would be nice to travel across state occasionally without being super stressed about range.
Thank you for any recommendations!
I live in ruralish Alaska. I've always wanted an electric car but everyone always told be it wouldn't work out in my situation, but I'm thinking maybe could make it work?
In my neck of the wood it's usually -10 to 10 degrees all winter. But occasionally we will have a cold snap and I've seen it at -40 a couple times in my life. I don't have a heated garage, but i do have a 220 outlet. Would i have any problems charging for days to day use? Would fast chargers have any problems?
Also, the nearest major population center is 190 miles away through a mountainous terrain, I would like to be able to make that journey in the dead of winter, would i be able to make it with room to spare with somethong with 300 miles of range? If I could, would I have to make a conscious effort to drive slower than I normally would and/or turn down the heat?
If those problems are manageable, imma get an EV in the comming year. If not... well I'm SOL lol.
Hello all. I am getting my driver's license next year and I am looking into electric cars. I'm not looking for anything real fancy and I'm not looking to drive probably no more than 10 miles or so a week. Would anybody have any recommendations for a first time car owner especially for electric cars? I m in the United States.
I'm starting a new job next year in which I'll be commuting 45mi each way, 2xs a week. I expect traffic to be pretty hellish (SF Bay Area) and looking to buy an electric vehicle. My head is spinning with all the options and the pros/cons of each, including whether to go new or lightly used.
My most important criteria is a smooth, quiet, comfortable ride, good highway driving assists (adaptive cruise control, lane centering, etc.) for the inevitable stop and go I'll be in and easy controls/navigation when driving. I've been driving a Honda Fit for 15 years, so I want something more substantial but don't need a large vehicle. If Honda made an electric CR-V that would basically be my dream car but alas...
WWYD?
Hyundai Ioniq 5 SEL. This feels like the most practical option as it gets top ratings in on all the review sites. All the controls feel pretty intuitive and easy to use. But something in me is not in love with it? Might have been my experience with the sales guys tho.
Volvo EX40, C40 (or perhaps the EX30 once its available in US). I don't like that I have to get the most expensive trim to get the Pilot Assist but do love the voice activated Google Assistant since I hate futzing with buttons and screens. Obvs more expensive than the Ioniq but the interior feels more premium. Unfortunately, would need to get new to get the 297mi range in the RWD; all used ones are AWD with a range of 220.
Kia EV6. I haven't test driven this one yet but hear good things; have an appointment Monday to give it a try.
Ones I test drove but are out include:
Subaru Solterra - bad reviews all around
Honda Prologue - too much car for me
Kira Niro - felt like a go-cart
Tesla - I just can't support rn
I like the idea of ev and like seeing more in my town and local dealers.I just seen the EV Silverado and it a Chevy Avalanche but very futuristic.I feel that with most EVs.Why can't more EVs just be the body style most Americans are use to,like the F150 lighting, looks like a F150 but EV.Ive seen conversions with older cars like corvettes and pickups.Do body styles need to be completely different for a battery and the motors?I'm just not very knowledgeable on EV yet.
