I’m a student at Durham uni looking at houses for next year, are there many student houses located outside of Durham with reliable bus service (preferably for less than £120 a month)? If so, what towns/villages are safest? Thanks
Hi there, I am a student of Durham Uni living in Newcastle Upon Tyne. I am wondering if there are night buses from Durham-Newcastle, as I have been told there are but cannot find evidence of such online. All I have found is the N21 which seems to only begin at 4am which is too late, as I would like to get the bus home from Durham after a night out e.g. 2ish AM. Any help is much appreciated.
Does anyone have any recommendations for good, scenic, fairly rural hiking routes around Durham City that are accessable without a car? The ones I've found online are pretty difficult to get to without doing multiple bus changeovers.
Looking for recommendations for Sunday lunch please! No budget really but we don’t want anything pretentious. Thank you
Hello, where would you recommend to dye light brown hair to golden blonde? Looking to get some vouchers for my wife, but want to make sure it's the right place!
Hi everyone! My family and I are planning a trip to enjoy the beautiful autumn foliage this year, ideally within a 30-minute drive from Durham City. Can anyone recommend the best places around here for viewing stunning autumn colors? We’d love to hear your suggestions for scenic spots or parks in the area. Thank you!
Southerners visiting family for the first time during half term and very excited for us adults! A little nervous about keeping small kids entertained especially after a 5 hour drive - something they're not used to. Any good places to visit or Halloween things on please? Thank you.
Edit: I've just heard half term in Durham is now, whereas our half term starts Monday 28th...
Hello everyone,
I don't know how many people will remember this, but Durham City centre used to have a McDonalds restaurant. If memory serves me correctly, it was located on the entrance to the Prince Bishops Way (nearest the cathedral). I think it's a Coop bank now(?).
Anyway, I was wondering what happened to it? Why did it close? Was there some scandal or issue with the council? I'm in no way complaining that it isn't there anymore, however I was probably only about 12/13 when it closed so I am unaware of the circumstances leading to its demise.
Does anyone remember?
Cheers!
I'm looking at making a career change and thinking about getting into taxi driving (hackney carriage). My dad is currently doing the same working for himself and I'll be joining him to help expand and get more money into the business and hopefully grow from there.
Is anybody else a taxi driver here, do you have any stories, do you cope well financially and what sort of life do you live?
Hi, I'm a new student in Durham and I'm currently on a rather tight budget, but I needed some warm winter clothing/shoes (jackets, jumpers, etc) and I was wondering what are the best charity shops in Durham? Recommendations in the outskirts of the city are also welcome (as long as they are accessible by bus!)
Edit: Thank you so much to everyone who replied! These are very helpful suggestions and I have already visited a couple of them :)
My little one is really getting into books and I'd like to find some good libraries in the NE, ideally the Durham & surrounding areas.
I know of the one near The Gala, can anyone recommend any others?
Moving up from 2 hours away blind. My mrs is from durham originally but I have no clue, any MMA gyms, spas would be nice to know. Thanks in advance
Please recommend any places?
Just want to see why most people moved to the best county 😂
I’ll be visiting my sister, who moved to Leeds a few years ago, for the very first time! We will be spending a few days in London, will take a day trip to York and Knaresborough, and will have a few days in Leeds as well. However, she will be busy on one of the days, so I decided to book a train to Durham.
As someone who absolutely loves history, food, and nature, what do you guys suggest I check out? Also, with it being a Sunday when I go, where can I get a delicious Sunday roast?
Thank you in advance for the advice! :)
Hi everyone! As per the title, I'm helping out with an event in Durham; it's like a TEDx event (with interesting 15-mins talks). It's called Bright Ideas Gathering (here's the speakers list: SPEAKERS - Bright Ideas Gathering) and I have a bunch of guest passes for students if anyone would like to attend?
The event is on Sat, 2 Nov at the Gala Theatre. Just DM ;-)
Anyone know where I can play football for fun in Durham not too seriously/ competitively? I’ve looked but I can only see serious 11 a side. I did sign up for a leisure league in January but seems that never went ahead because there aren’t enough teams
I'm moving to Durham for a PhD at the uni and wanting to start swimming again (so won't joint the uni swim club). I have got a car so can travel but what would everyone's recommendations be for the best place to go swimming after 5/6pm? Just wanting casual swimming or a slow lane if its a lane session. Thank you
I have looked into Freeman's Quay and Abbey leisure centres so would like people's opinions on these or if there's any better ones around.
I'm in the middle of durham and Newcastle and have been heading over Newcastle for a while now mainly because I know the city so well but I'd like to explore durham. Is there any particular routes to take on a road bike, preferably 20+ miles.
I Will be driving somewhat close and need to park before setting off to avoid riding back up some pretty dangerous and very still hills.
I’m coming up to Durham in October and I’m looking at staying at the Premier Inn Hotel Durham North or travelodge Chester le street Just wondering, is there a decent pub within the vicinity of these hotels .I would even travel into Durham itself to find a decent pub serving decent food.
I can't stop crying, I feel so bloody sad right now. I'm an international student going to Durham uni this year and I got the dates all wrong for freshers. I thought it would start 30th September but apparently irs already started from the 25th. I'll be missing most events as well as my matriculation on the 28th. I might get a ticket in time for the 29th. Which means I might have one day of freshers week.
I don't know how I'll make friends. I don't know how anything will work out. I don't know any of this works. I wish I weren't here at all. Uni was my thing and now I've missed my firm and I'm doing this. I have no idea what to do.
How do we get a 2.5 year old from Durham to Newcastle airport without a car?! It seems wasteful to hire a car for it to just sit at the airport and I’m worried about no car seat if we get a taxi. Anyone know of a taxi company that uses car seats?
Hi there! As the title suggests, I’m not looking for anything fancy, just a simple, very cheap, haircut. Any recommendations?
Hello everyone. We are an Asian family ll be soon moving to this place with our 3 yr old kid. We are supposed to keep applications for primary school next year so we are touring them. But in dilemma about keeping the preferences order. Till now we have toured belmont C of E school, belmont cheverley school, durham gilesgate etc. All of which looks good to us. So, we appreciate this group help in narrowing down the options and getting to know the primary schools better from your experience. We even toured framwellgate school and nearby Newton hall but property to rent near them is quite expensive to us. Kindly advise. Thank you
Hi, even though I'm Durham born and bred I'm only 15 so just finding out about the main city and stuff. I'm also aspiring in photography (mainly landscapes and monuments. So I'll be taking pictures of the river, cathedral for example.). Are we welcoming to this sorta thing?
