What are my chances of getting in

So lately I've been really stressing out about this. I'm applying to Durham for Politics and IR. I'm a student with an average ~90, taking 4 A levels predicted 4A* with a personal statement that's been accepted by Cambridge as they gave me an interview for HSPS. However I highly doubt I'll get in. Durham is my 2nd choice and the 3 others (kings, UCL, LSE) are really not options I want because I really dont want to move to London, and so I've been quite worried about my odds of getting into Durham. What are the chances I get in or don't. And what could be the reasons to not take me (could it include simply not wanting applicants like me for this specific year?)

Christmas Festival - Worth a visit?

Hi All, we recently moved to the area and have heard good things about Durham Christmas Festival, is it worth a visit? We got abit fed up with Birmingham's repetitive and overpriced stalls so hoped this might be a bit of a better experience? Thanks

laser hair removal clinics?

I’ve been using the Candela™ GentleMax Pro system at laser clinics uk for hair removal on arms, legs and face. However, they’ve told me that the hair on my stomach, shoulders, and back is too "fluffy" for
laser treatment. 😔
If anyone knows of a place that can help, I’d be super grateful for recommendations!

Old school grocers

Since the shop on North Road disappeared, I've been mourning the loss of the old school grocers. The sort of place where you can, not only get seasonal veg, but also unusual things you don't get in the supermarket. Does anyone know of a grocers in or around Durham? Ty x

Pub quizzes tonight?

Hello lovely Durham people

I am away for work this week and am missing my regular Wednesday quiz.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a Wednesday night pub quiz in the city centre in a place I can also get something to eat?

Thanks in advance

Looking for Musicians/Musically inclined folk

Hey r/DurhamUK

I've recently moved back close to the city centre, so I'm wanting to form a band and hopefully meet some more musically inclined people and form some new friendships! Even if you're not musically inclined, I do have friends that aren't musicians.

Regarding my musical intentions:

My name is William and I’m a musician/songwriter/producer from Durham. I’m looking to form a band (already have the name!) in the Rock/Punk/Pop vein. Some of my influences are: Green Day, Beatles, 10cc, Police, Abba, Supertramp, Cheap Trick, Roxy Music, Steely Dan & Weezer

My vision for this band would be almost a 10cc-style arrangement, in which we all write songs & collaborate, bring them to the group and audition the best ones. However, if you’re not a songwriter don’t be put off on this alone!

My “objective points” for this band are (feel free to add):

  • Well crafted songs/pieces of music
  • Strong lyrics/witty/deadpan/ironic
  • Non-diatonic harmony
  • Warm & kitsch production
  • “Meta” songwriting

“How are you going to mix Punk & Abba influences?!” you may be asking, my solo stuff (William Cawley, not the name of this project) is an example of such. (https://open.spotify.com/track/3p3KNrHyQmJNbz2oIV4fqI?si=9d7c4cc7ca2447d1)

Ideal requirements:

  • Own vehicle / able to travel
  • Drums: Own kit/breakables
  • I’d be looking to rehearse once every two weeks
  • Strong communication skills
  • Backing vocal ability

If after all that you’re interested in making some genuine art & performing it live, then message me here or drop me a line.

C2C cycling route

Afternoon all

Currently live in Annfield Plain, been offered a job in Washington and want to cycle there along the C2C path. Shift times are a bit random, so most of the journeys will be in the dark in Winter.

What are my chances of making it there / back without paying a 100% bike tax to some scally from Stanley? There's another route past Tanfield Railway that looks a bit safer, but I'm fat and lazy, and would prefer to take the shortest way there.

Hi, would anybody like to be my gym buddy? :)

Hello! I am 18F and I am looking for a gym buddy!!! Brandon area. Mostly looking for other women for safety reasons but will consider anyone who is awesome... I am very very overweight and I want to turn my life around but know nothing about fitness. Would love a gym buddy and a friend so we can motivate each other 🥰 I am a bit weird, post history checks out lol so I would love to find some other crazy alternative person who wants to work out together and maybe discuss cool stuff ? Sorry if this post comes across as creepy, i'm autistic 😭 Thank you!!!

Best colleges for working class

Hi, pretty self explanatory I'm from a lower income background love the university but want to avoid the 'posh' stereotype although this is a sort of sweeping generalisation and I know theirs lovely people in any college. Despite thus still I wouldn't mind a college were I fit in more (big reason I dropped out of my old university was social inclusion) I wouldn't mind a good social life and easy access to any gyms. I have no preference for catered or non-catered or sharing bathrooms as the social aspect (beside studies) is the most important for me.

Parking Help (please)

Hello

I'll be moving to Bowburn or similar but I need to catch a train back to Essex once a month for 3-4 days.

I looked at Park and Ride but that's maximum of 2 nights.

Is there a solution to driving somewhere and leaving my vehicle for a few days? Happy to walk for 15-20 minutes.

Or is a bus from Bowburn to Durham train station the only solution? I'd have my dog with me though, which she may not be allowed on buses?

Do you think that uni students look after the areas where they live?

I'm doing my a level geography research task in how students affect Durham. If you would be so kind as to give me your opinion it'd help.

Why so much broken glass in Durham city?

Something I’ve always noticed and doesn’t seem to be getting any better is the sheer amount of broken glass everywhere, amongst other bits of rubbish.

What are people doing with their bottles, smashing them on the ground? And shouldn’t the council be sweeping the streets?

I love Durham so much and it does make me sad to see the city being treated so poorly.

What’s Durham like?

I keep hearing rumours about Durham being full of stuck up posh people at the University or very mean clique type people? I was wondering, is this true? I wanna do a PGCE for Primary education at this university as I wanna attend a good university and the other universities don’t feel right but Durham has something that felt right to me when I attended it for a day. I mean is this true?

Student Housing

I’m a student at Durham uni looking at houses for next year, are there many student houses located outside of Durham with reliable bus service (preferably for less than £120 a month)? If so, what towns/villages are safest? Thanks
