In need of boot repair, Mervin was my go to guy but last time I had a repair done, he said he was closing shop. Some people have suggested he's still in business though...
So, anyone know if Mervin is still working out of the shop on Narrow Gauge?
Does anybody have any recommendations on a good roofing company that will do repair work? The ones we’ve contacted so far only do replacements, not repairs. We’ve got some flashing that needs to be looked at.
Looking for a hair stylist in Durango that is familiar with alternative hairstyles, thank you!
Been going to ski barn but they’re getting crazy expensive and service lacking. Just curious if there’s a hidden gem.
Ate at Carver’s today and got put at the loser table. It was an awkward sitting spot. I was practically blocking the walk way for all their customers and employees. Pretty much, listened to the neighbors’ conversation in the booth next to us. Then I was wondering if my arm would become the grab bar to help an old lady get out of the booth.
Hopefully, they see this post and re-configure that one.
This morning early
We're building a home and have those ugly splits in the plans but we will have radiant heat floors. I wonder if anyone here has had success with radiant cooling?
We’re moving into a place with a pellet stove and looking for a place to get pellets in bulk from. I see that Basin Co-op sells 40# bags, but I don’t love the idea of all that plastic waste from the bags. Is there a local place that we can roll up to and get loose pellets dumped into our truck somehow? From what we’re reading, it seems like you can burn through pellets pretty quickly (about a bag (40 lbs) per day).
Hey all,
Ody, a young and awesome kid is having his wish granted tonight at the help of MakeAWish, which was to drive our famous engine. If you want to show your support, show up in blue and maybe with a couple signs to send him off!
Durango High School Student Council students will be there at 7:15 with posters and balloons to send him on his way.
Hello!
I have 3 extra tickets for the polar express tonight at 8pm, in the deluxe section. Unfortunately my parents couldn't make the trip last minute. Looking for $50 each ticket obo. We can meet there tonight to provide you with the tickets.
Hopefully someone is interested. Thanks!
Edit: they're adult tickets
Hiya,
The last several years we've gone up Junction and around Vallecito for trees but it's always slim pickings out there. Any recommendations for where we should try this year?
Thanks in advance :)
ETA: a lot of wet blankets in this thread here. Take it up with the literal forest service. I went to school for environmental science and work in environmental education. Read a book or two about fire mitigation and get back to me. Or don't because I don't care
Asked what the average family looks like in durango. I'm really surprised how accurate it is
I’m a born and raised local and also a realtor so I was thoroughly amused
Ah, Durango, Colorado—where you’ll find locals debating whether the mountain air or the craft beer is thinner. It’s a charming town where a “traffic jam” means waiting behind three Subarus and a herd of elk. People claim they moved here for the outdoor lifestyle, but half the population spends more time talking about their last hike than actually going on one.
Durango’s downtown might be historic, but good luck finding a parking spot that isn’t three blocks away and up a hill that feels like a 14er. And while the Durango-Silverton train is picturesque, don’t be surprised when you end up covered in soot, paying for the privilege.
Oh, and let’s not forget the real estate—Durango might be small, but the housing prices sure dream big. Everyone’s chasing that Southwest Colorado lifestyle… just as soon as they can outbid a Texan for it.
Still, Durango wouldn’t be Durango without its quirks—it’s the kind of place where everyone knows your dog’s name, but not yours, and where your ski pass is practically a form of ID.
Is anyone aware of any primary care providers who are not owned by or associated with Common Spirit / Mercy?
The doctor I've been going to for the last 15 years had their practice bought up by Common Spirit this summer and I'm now looking for new doctor.
I am visiting from out of state, will be spending a few days here and also in pagosa springs. I want to buy kangaroo meat for my dog who has severe food allergies. Anyone know of any meat markets that carry kangaroo meat here?
I lived in Durango for about 9 months April to January back in 2021, but was riding less at the beginning and end of my time there, and I'm keen to get back and ride some trail this coming March. How much snow will there likely be around that time? Particularly on Horse Gulch above FLC, Overend, Twin Buttes, Animas Mountain, and then Phil's World which I never got to do out there? TIA!
I was cleaning our bathroom exhaust in a house we've lived in for several years when I noticed that whoever installed it just put it directly into the ceiling without a vent that goes anywhere. I don't know a lot about this kind of thing but with the little research I've done and what I've seen in the past, this is kind of ridiculous. A bathroom vent is there to move overly humid, stinky air out of the bathroom and ideally outside. At the very least it probably should go into the attic. So, one that is installed directly into the ceiling is just causing more problems because it's concentrating that air into one spot. However, I came here from the Midwest where the air is much more humid and rotten wood is a much more common occurrence. Does anybody here know if Colorado/durango has specific codes on this or is it just a homeowners choice whether to have a bathroom exhaust and how to use it. It just seems like a ceiling fan would be more appropriate than this installation because at least it is moving air in an open space for it to distribute into the greater circulation of the house.
Durango community I need your help. My dad has brain cancer and just had a terrible stroke that has left his left side immobile. There is a slim chance he will ever be able to walk again. There is a slim chance he will be able to move his left hand again. Is there ANYONE willing to part with a wheelchair in town—name your price. He lives in Farmington but I think he will have to relocate here to live with our family now. This is very stressful and I really can’t wrap my hand around it so any help I would be grateful for.
I will be in the Durango area in December to visit some family and need a spot to work remotely for a couple of days (my family lives on the county roads with terrible WiFi haha). My husband and I lived in Durango before moving about 5-6 years ago, so I am not sure what new spots there might be. I used to love doing homework at the Steaming Bean, but I know sadly that closed while we still lived there. Are there any spots similar that wouldn't mind me setting up shop for a few hours (of course going to purchase food + drinks throughout)? I also used to go to the library on occasion but I have a few meetings and don't want to be disruptive.
Hi All, my wife and young daughter are driving back home from Denver later today (post 4 pm) and want to avoid any hazardous driving conditions. They'll likely split it into two days to avoid driving at night. I've seen driving through Moab as an option on a previous thread, but they'd have to take I70 which can be dicey. I'm curious about other travel routes that would avoid other passes, perhaps driving south? Adding a few hours is no big deal. Thoughts?
Hey all, wife and I are planning a trip to the Durango area Next year. We're looking at about a week or so at the end of December. We're from the south so I've literally only driven in snow 2 times. I have a 2WD nissan frontier with all season tires. Looking for recommendations on what to get before we come up there. I've heard about needing snow chains given the conditions, any recommendations on those? Things to to. Things to not do. Any advice welcome.
I’ll be going snowboarding at Purgatory and staying near the resort area. Since I won’t have a car, I was wondering if it’s possible to have groceries delivered to the resort? I’ve heard it’s hard to get ride shares in the area. Every time I’ve been, I’ve had someone who has rented a car so this will be my first time without one.
Anyone know of any regularly occurring meditation groups in Durango, or any upcoming mindfulness events? Thanks so much!
I hope this post is allowed, I’m trying every site I can post on. Can everyone especially near Aztec please keep an eye out for our lost cat. He got in a car that was visiting a neighbor and has been lost just before Aztec in an area unfamiliar to him. I’m hoping he’s trying to get home and is spotted. We are offering a $500 reward. He’s a neutered male with white whiskers on the right side. Thank you
