Extra waste bin?

Does anyone know if I can get an extra waste bin due to having a daughter still in nappies? (6 years old) She gets disability benefit if that makes a difference. Unsure who to speak to for advice on this matter but we have so much extra rubbish that our bin gets filled the day it gets emptied.

Moving to Dumfries and Galloway

My wife has got an offer to be a GP trainee in Dumfries and Galloway. We are from India and moving to the UK.

I have been on the net and seems like it is a nice, cosy and welcoming place. Any tips on best parts to live in the region? And any tips on must have stuff we need to pack?

Bruach are coming!

We're coming to Dumfries this weekend! As part of Hidden Gem Festival, we're going to make some noise at the Coach and Horses Inn! We'll play foot stomping folk classics like Rothesay-o and Killikrankie, Irish River and Dirty Old Town. Get down and bring your dancing shoes!

Creetown Question

Just a quick Q for anyone in/around this area if there are any active users. Can anyone confirm if the Ellangowan Hotel is still open? Not sure if it just didn’t reopen post-COVID but there’s basically no online presence from what I can see, and I was looking to come down from Glasgow for a visit.

Thanks!

Looking for a lost uncle - please help

Hello Redditors! My mother lost contact with my uncle a number of years ago and sadly she has recently passed away and we are struggling to find away to get in touch with him. I’ve searched on 192 and haven’t managed to find a phone number but I have found an address:

11  Guilyhill Court,  Newbridge Drive,  Dumfries,  Dumfriesshire,  DG2 0LG

I’m not even 100% sure that this is him but I do know he lived in Dumfries for a number a of years and he had a long term partner who I think was called Jo.

His name is Peter Stirzaker, if anyone knows him or could help me get in contact with him, I and my family would be forever grateful.

Thank you in advance

Any recommendations for a guy with longer hair getting a haircut in Dumfries?

Recently moved to the area and probably needing to get myself booked in somewhere. Google just keeps sending me to Turkish barbers or more traditional clipper cut places, all of which are totally fine if I was getting a shorter cut, but in my experience they're not as good at cutting longer hair.

So in short, if anyone has any recommendations for a longer gents cut that would be appreciated! Thanks!

How would D&G folk feel about merging with the Borders?

Hi! I posted something similar to this question on r/Scotland a few weeks back, but want some more specific advice.

Context is important for this one. I'm a bit of a nerd and I'm interested in the idea of local government reform. I'm from Edinburgh, and I'm trying to come up with my own draft for a new system of local government for Scotland. The south has presented something of an issue for me, partly because its the area I know the least about.

The plan would be to have a two tier system, with municipalities at the local level representing towns, districts etc, far smaller than our current councils. On top of this there would be a few larger regional councils for more strategic plans. Making municipalities has largely been easy (D&G will be split into Wigtown, the Stewartry, Nithsdale, Annandale and Dumfries, The Borders will be split into Tweeddale, Lauderdale, Berwickshire, Hawick and Jedburgh).

The regional councils have been very difficult though. Generally speaking I've been aiming for populations of 300k or above for a region, both D&G and the borders fall well bellow that. Merging D&G with Ayrshire to the North feels really awkward and probably unpopular. Merging the Borders with Lothian would be less bad, but even then I think the Borders isn't connected to Edinburgh in the way my native Midlothian is, plus there's an obvious cultural divide.

On paper, a good solution might be to merge both D&G and the Borders to create a Southern Uplands area. This would bring the total population to 265'000 people, close enough to the target I'd be comfortable with it. The two regions are also often talked about geographically as one unit, demographically they're very similar (both rural, somewhat more Conservative etc) so this seems like a good proposal. I do worry the two areas aren't very well connected for something like this to work in practice.

The other option I'm considering is just giving D&G and the Borders waives and allowing them to continue as regions based on the fact that they're too rural to fit into any other region.

Anyways, I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.

Devil's Bridge, Port Logan - best way to view it?

I'm currently camping with my family at a campsite just south of Stranraer, and would love to go and have a look at the Devil's Bridge, just north of Port Logan. I'm wondering if there's anyone here who can advise me on the best way to reach it?

Moving to Dumfries

My girlfriend and I are needing to move to Dumfries as she is a medical student and will be on placement there for at least the next two years. She was there for three months last year and really enjoyed her time there, I also liked the town when I came to visit.

However we've been trying for months now to secure a property to move into ahead of her placement starting at the end of July but we've had no luck. From letting agencies not getting back to us with applications for properties, to landlords rejecting us because we have an indoor cat to landlords just not getting back to us at all.

I work from home in a well paying job, have rented privately since I was 18 and had my cat for the last 11 years without any issues previously.

What is going on with the rental market in Dumfries? And can anyone point us in the right direction? We're checking Rightmove, Zoopla, on the market, gumtree and openrent every day and applying for pretty much every property that's affordable (no more than 800pcm). I'm also in local Facebook groups where, again, even if something comes up we either get ghosted by the landlord or rejected for the crime of having a pet.

If anyone has any experience of renting in Dumfries and has any pointers that would be a massive help. At this point we're really worried we won't be able to find anywhere.

Johnstonebridge services geese ?

Sup all, I stop by these services once a month and I guess today as we sat watching them use the zebra crossing they peaked my curiosity.

What type are they, where do they sleep , who owns them or manages them, are they fed or self graze , do they ever go to the pond ??

Curiosity would like to know.
