In an attempt to make more informed and strategic sports betting decisions, I conducted a detailed table-top exercise to explore various parlay betting scenarios. The goal was to analyze and compare different combinations of parlays and single bets to strike an ideal balance between maximizing potential returns and minimizing risk. By carefully examining each approach, I aimed to develop a methodical and data-driven betting strategy. I hope you find this (5) minute read informative and financially rewarding. I will be publishing a second article soon that explains how the promos that DK, FanDuel and other sports books offer can be traps if not played carefully.

My analysis was focused on developing a balanced sports betting strategy using a combination of parlays and single bets, each optimized to maximize potential returns while managing risk. The table below is intended to illustrate/outline several different parlay betting scenarios, each using a maximum bet amount of $200, split between a combination of parlays and single bets. I assumed all betting odds to be -250 (for illustration and simplicity sake), which translates to a 71.4% implied probability for each individual leg or single beat prop to win. The goal was to explore different combinations of parlays and single bets to find an optimal balance between risk and reward, with the understanding that parlays inherently carry more risk due to the compounding nature of multiple bets, while single bets offer a more consistent and safer return.

In my analysis, I highlighted what I call the “optimal” parlay strategy, which I identified as the two 3-Leg Parlays combined with two single bets. This particular combination of bets provides a moderate risk level with a relatively high potential reward, giving a 13% chance of hitting both parlays and a 60% chance of hitting at least one. The single bets act as an insurance policy, with a 51% chance of the single, high-confidence bets hitting, helping to offset any potential losses from missed parlays. Please note: To further minimize any unnecessary risk, I would not place single bets that were also being bet in one of the parlays for obvious reasons. By diversifying my wager amounts and spreading my bets across different combinations, I aimed to achieve a balanced strategy that leverages the potential for high payouts while still offering some level of protection.
