Any leads on where I could potentially find a French bow frog made by PW Bryant? I recently acquired a bow made by him but it had a different frog not made by him. The original frog was probably replaced due to tremendous use from the previous owner(s) or because this replacement frog can take more hair than the original. Pairing this bow with an original frog that could potentially fit could raise my bows value.
My orchestra teacher thinks i should definitely audition for it, but i have only been playing since seventh grade, and the class would start my freshman year, so thats sort of where my skill level is at also i have no idea what to play if anyone has any ideas for advice for me please let me know, this is what the audition will include: Prepare two scales of your choice. Prepare one solo piece of your choice. There will be a brief sightreading excerpt as well

i play regional mexican music in a band and i have nylons but i don’t really like the sound and i thought nylon core metal strings would sound better and also be soft on the hands
I have an opportunity to play in my schools pit orchestra for a musical, but they want me to play the Cello part since they already have a bass player and don’t have a Cello player. I’m thinking that I’d like to play it but I’m wondering if I need to go through all the trouble of learning it up an octave, if I can just play it as it’s written, or some kind of hybrid of both. I have about two months to learn it and most of the rhythms aren’t that hard, lot of whole, half, and quarter notes with some eighth notes and triplets mixed in. However most of it is in a bunch of difficult key signatures. If anyone with knowledge or experience in playing cello parts on bass can instruct me on what to do it would be very helpful!
I play bluegrass on a 1/2 size Shen plywood upright and have played on this same bass for 10 years. I rarely change the strings and currently am rocking some Helicore Hybrids that are at least 6 years old. I really need new strings and I want to go with lighter and more responsive, but unfortunately a lot of the high quality strings i'm looking at are not made for 1/2 size. Would you guys have any recommendations for good 1/2 size bluegrass strings or should i just save up to invest in a 3/4 size bass? No complaints about my actual bass but it is small and very quiet acoustically. This is the only bass i've ever owned and i know i will need to upgrade at some point anyways.
I have been given Findeisens first technical study and I found myself after about a week of looking into it to really struggle with this one. Does anyone have some ideas and suggestions on how to tackle the piece?
I chose double bass for my band class and I was playing it but it’s so quiet i can’t hear it at all? Also the strings are covered in weird plastic is that normal? There’s also what I assume is a piezo pickup type cable coming from it is that supposed to be plugged in? Also is there a way to practice the upright bass on an electric bass
So im playing idduls of Pegasus and hambinberg? I think there spelt, and I've been playing since 7th and now a hs freshman and im struggling badd. Pizz hurts so bad it ruins my performance the rest of the 4 pages for pegasus and hambinberg being a 2 2 time stamp is so annoying especially after alot of pizz. How can I make my pizz better? I play with the side of my finger or the tip depending on how fast i switch in
Excited!
Alright yall, question time! I've got my setup nearly perfect (cheap shitty plywood bass with quality setup, upgraded bridge, endpin, tailpiece, soundpost, and tuners, e&a spirocore weich d&g helicore hybrid light). I tried using a full set of spirocores but the d&g were WAY too nasal and bright. Instead, the helicore's are more balanced (and louder somehow) but get no growl or mwah at all. Is there something I can adjust with my technique to fix this? Or reccomendations for strings? Thanks!
Hey all, I'm a mostly out of practice musician that is trying to get back into it. I can read music and I was once quite good at the Trumpet. I've been playing electric bass on and off for two decades and was once decent at that. I've now been asked to play in a bluegrass group but I'd like to also expand my skills into classical and jazz so I have more stuff to practice.
I bought the ray brown bass method and Simandl. Are those good choices? Are there better books? What sorts of solo pieces exist that people like?
I really want a piece to place with my friends and imslp has such a limited amount of options (or the bass part adds nothing to the piece) I did find one I liked, but I want more. Any suggestions?
(btw I have no money so I have to stick to public domain and stuff 😞)
In his youth, my grand father used to play doublebass. He is a trompetist. Nowaday it's hard for him to play the trompette due to breathing issue but he really wanna play doublebass like he used to. I'm willing to buy him one for his birthday but i know nothing about this instrument. I dont want an electric one. I'm willing to spend 1000 euros. Do you think it's enough ? Which model should i take ? He haven't played in 50 years. Tell me everything i need to know please :)
Hi all, I am relatively new to upright bass. I am mostly an electric bass player. I don’t ever sit when I play or practice (playing mostly jazz and country music). I’m trying to build my upright bass up to be able to gig on it but I’ve been dealing with mid back pain on my left side. No lower back pain to speak of. It is not severe or sharp, but more dull. Is it possible my muscles are just weak? Or is this something that can be fixed with posture. I’ve tried a bunch of different postural tweaks - i used to lean too far forward and corrected that, been working on engaging my shoulder/back muscles more on my left side etc but this mid back thing wont go away. Any advice? Thanks
Hello hello! I was curious if anyone knew how renter friendly this pickup is. I'm renting my first double bass and I want a little more volume, when I have to eventually take the pick up off to return it to the owner.
Hi, I've been playing fretted bass guitar for over 20 years now and decided to pick up double bass. Should I be looking at EUBs like NS Design or Ibanez makes or just go for the real big thing? Im 191cm tall so also interested in 7/8 size. My budget for this is around 1500$. Currently living in an apartment, are real upright bases loud enough to be a neighbour problem? Thanks!
I'm auditioning for college and they ask to have no full pieces, just two contrasting selections. I picked two selections that add up to about 3-4 minutes of music. Is that enough?
There's so many products and ideas . Many get rid of a wolf but dampen the instrument overall. Please share any thoughts as well as answer the poll.
Does anyone have a recommended recording where you can hear the bass section really well? Or even better an isolated part?
I'm trying to prepare for my first time playing in a proper orchestra so I would appreciate any tips in general you guys might have!
I received the sheet music today and the rehearsal is in a week, I have a lesson with my teacher in between but so far I've just been trying to read the score along with a recording (not even playing my bass) and I'm kinda having some difficulties with timing.
Is this a harmonic on the D string where B natural sits?
Context: I’m playing the song “Soupbone” with my big band and I’m wanting to imitate the tone (not the full solo).
In the bass solo for the jazz chart “Soupbone” by the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, when the bassist (John Clayton) takes his solo, I couldn’t quite figure out what was so special about the tone. Then it hit me: he’s muted! Is this something we can agree upon, or do you guys have other ideas?
It’s played super heavily and then it gets light and airy. It’s pretty fast but not too much and it sounds EPIC
I have just recently started playing my bass again to try and get into jazz. However, when I play b flat on the a string I get this noise. Can anyone help me figure out what it is and a possible solution?
Hello everybody! I wanted to see if there is anything I can do to protect my bass from my cat sitting on it/scratching it without putting it in the case and putting it upright.
If I lay my bass down, my cat will sit on it, whether it’s in the case or not, and sometimes will try and sit on the neck which worries me.
Have any of you dealt with this? Is there something I can do to make the bass more accessible to me? Any suggestions will help!
I'm currently installing some solo strings onto my bass and was wondering if changing between solo tuning and orchestral tuning damage my bass in any way? For example is there any risk in by bridge falling over or smth like that?
Edit: sorry, I meant if retuning with solo strings from orchestral to solo back and forth could damage the instrument? If I would do this maybe 3-4times a week or depending on the week.
