Welcome to the Doom Metal Sub

Doom metal is an extreme form of heavy metal music that typically uses slower tempos, low-tuned guitars and a much "thicker" or "heavier" sound than other metal genres. Both the music and the lyrics intend to evoke a sense of despair, dread, and impending doom. The genre is strongly influenced by the early work of Black Sabbath, who formed a prototype for doom metal with songs such as "Black Sabbath", "Electric Funeral" and "Into the Void".

During the first half of the 1980s, a number of bands from England (Pagan Altar, Witchfinder General), the United States (Pentagram, Saint Vitus, Trouble) and Sweden (Candlemass, Count Raven) defined doom metal as a distinct genre.

  • FAQ

  • Can I post something if it's not doom metal? Yes! We like proto-doom, sludge, stoner rock, heavy psych, and other "low an' slow" stuff from bands that aren't considered doom metal.

  • How should I tag my post? Tag it how ever you want, but this is what we think works best. "Artist - Song Title [style, country, year]" (without the quotes)

Pallbearer & Elder: Where Next?

Elder’s Reflections of a Dying World and Pallbearer’s Heartless were both released during a period when my musical tastes were expanding, and hit at the exact right time.

Ahead of an all-dayer where I’ll be seeing both Pallbearer and Baroness, who are probably my favourite “heavy” band, I’ve dived back into this world and am looking for bands playing similar kinds of epic/420-friendly metal.

Searched for similar threads BUT (and this is probably heresy) I don’t really like Black Sabbath (i am English and they’re part of the country’s cultural fabric so we’re impossible to avoid growing up). So I’m less interested in the genre’s progenitors and more in newer bands developing the genre.

Can’t wait to see what you all come up with (if I’m not burned at the stake first 😃)

Testing out my fuzzy guitar tone for a solo doom project I'm working on. Big chordy riffs. What do you think?

Anyone want 2 tickets to Sunn O))) at Lincoln Center in NYC this Sunday 11/17?

I can’t make it so I will either contact Lincoln Center for a refund or hand them off to anyone interested. I just paid $5 apiece for processing fees, would love to get my 10 bucks back but if you’re broke it’s not a big deal. Upper balcony seats, aisle end in a singular row so they’re nicely secluded. Just don’t want them to go to waste!

Is this band slept on?

I love their guitar. They have a super unique way of writing really catchy doomy riffs. It really sucks their discography is so small cause their guitarist got injured

I accidentally ended up with 2 copies of this record, does anyone want it?

Dismal Planet by Coffin Torture; still sealed and allegedly purple vinyl. The band sounds like a mix of Conan & old-school death metal: huge crushing fuzzy riffs that don’t take themselves too seriously

Since I got this accidentally for free, I want to give it away for free. I’ll media mail ship it anywhere in the US. If you want to talk a more expensive option/international shipping we can work something out

Fuzz pedals that DON’T doom?

So I love me some dirt pedals. Particularly fuzz but any dirt will do. I was curious about any fuzz pedals that can’t doom? I feel like all of them doom. If it fuzzes, it dooms, right? Wrong? Opinions?
