Welcome to the Doom Metal Sub

Doom metal is an extreme form of heavy metal music that typically uses slower tempos, low-tuned guitars and a much "thicker" or "heavier" sound than other metal genres. Both the music and the lyrics intend to evoke a sense of despair, dread, and impending doom. The genre is strongly influenced by the early work of Black Sabbath, who formed a prototype for doom metal with songs such as "Black Sabbath", "Electric Funeral" and "Into the Void".

During the first half of the 1980s, a number of bands from England (Pagan Altar, Witchfinder General), the United States (Pentagram, Saint Vitus, Trouble) and Sweden (Candlemass, Count Raven) defined doom metal as a distinct genre.

  • FAQ

  • Can I post something if it's not doom metal? Yes! We like proto-doom, sludge, stoner rock, heavy psych, and other "low an' slow" stuff from bands that aren't considered doom metal.

  • How should I tag my post? Tag it how ever you want, but this is what we think works best. "Artist - Song Title [style, country, year]" (without the quotes)

  • I can't see my post. What happened? It was probably caught by the spam filter. Click here to send us a message and we'll fish it out for you.

  • Do you have link flairs? Yep! Here's the list.

What do y’all think of Zakk Sabbath?

I’m honestly just posting cause I’m surprised I don’t really see them mentioned much. I personally like their version of Under the Sun better, even if I don’t get Zakk’s EMG obsession lol.

Any bands with singers who sound Ozzy-esque?

Seems like a lot of doom bands took more Sabbath influence from the Iommi riffs than the Ozzy vocals but I'd love to get some recs on bands with the high whiny/nasal thing going.

I love you people(mods you too)! Why? You all always have the best taste in music, are friendly, and when I meet new people (you) at concerts, you're all always friendly and sociable. I hope you're all doing well. Peace! \m/

My meds have kicked in, but I'm genuine on this. Also, not an upvote party, I'm just super cereal, love you guys!

Messa in SF

Excellent show last night in San Francisco. I don't know why this band isn't bigger.

Opening band, Older Sun, is kinda like a dark version of Jefferson Airplane. If a fan of retro witch rock, check them out.

Conan, new listener.

So I’m branching out and decided to give Conan a deep dive. Everything’s great and fun, but the vocals kinda get to me.. is it just monotone shouting through all their material or am I just scratching the surface of something?

I understand the whole battle cry and demolishing effect the ear receives. Just kinda like.. boring in ways, please throw some notes in there besides the one, dude.

Typing that I find beauty in the lack of and switch to the mindset of a noise rock influence. It’s all just fucking art, whatever.

Cheers.

What song/s make you make this face?

Obviously in a good way, but in what songs are the riffs so sick they make you screw up your face? Ex. Bongripper - Nothing

Anyone know of any Sci-Fi-Space-Doom?

Total random question I decided to test you folks with, because I'm waiting on a 1200+ page PDF to finally generate while I'm at work. :)

But I am genuinely curious if there is a such thing of:

  • 1 or many songs by any artist/band, or
  • maybe a full album an artist/band did, or
  • a band that is mainly creating this kind of music primarily.

Cheers!

Best Streaming Apps?

Was curious what streaming apps you guys like to use and how well they rate for Doom music.

Got Tidal? YouTube Music? Spotifiy? Let me know how it blows.
