Dollar General, your not so accurately named home for stuff that normally costs more than it would at a general supermarket or department store!

I hate this company with every bone and nerve in my body.
I told them I cannot do 3 - 10:30 (which is usually almost 11 anyways). I got told she doesn't do the schedule, that the Legion app does it and that I need to change my availability (because i am still a full time student, cant work specific hours.). Okay, cool. I go on and set it to what I want to work.
Next schedule comes out, given the exact same thing. Texted her saying I changed the availability and I couldn't do it. I got told to reconsider my job. I try and be professional about it and kindly request certain things, but it just goes through one ear and right out the other.
Needless to say, this is a terrible first job. Also should I mention how I am a minor and can't sell tobacco, and I'm just an associate so I have no permission to do a single thing other then ring people up. If someone scans something accidentally when they set it down and then don't want it, I have to walk the entire store to find a key holder that can take it off.
Thinking about quitting. Any tips on how to come off nicely but still stern about my issues I am having? Need the help I can get lol.
So, title may seem like I need to go to another subreddit, however I do work at DG and have never seen this before.
A customer came in, he's a semi-regular, and told me that he needs receipt tape to swipe his card, otherwise it won't work. I gave it to him, albeit very cautious and confused because wtf.
That somehow made his card work. Is this like, a scam or something? I'm so lost, I've worked here for almost 2 years, and that's the first time I've ever seen that.
P.S. He also told me that in customer service I need to talk more (I do the bare minimum since I personally hate small talk and my manager knows this and is fine with it as long as I acknowledge them and ask them the basic questions, as well as wishing them a nice day). I just gave him a look and didn't say anything lol
Edit: I should probably add I work in New York, so plastic bags aren't available here unless you had them before the ban, hence why he asked for receipt tape. It was weird to me though because he covered the swiping part on his card, but it went through so I guess it works fine. Thank you for the responses though, everyone!
Hi! How is everyone? Thankfully my first day of cashiering went better than I thought, I even had fun! Still, the thing that makes me still a little confused and anxious, is the talk of being over or under a certain number when calculating the total at the end of the day. I’m still somewhat confused on the process, and how to go about it or be better at not doing that because they brought up termination and that makes me even more anxious. I really don’t want to mess this up…
Thank you! I’m sorry if I’m asking a lot as this is my second post around this question!
Have a great day!
After being fired for stupid consequences on January 15th I will not disclose, I'm thankful to be away from the toxic environment that is Dollar General. I won't apologize to anyone but myself. I repeatedly took care of expired foods because no one else cared enough to even though I personally got sick off our product and all management would do is ignore what I had to say.
My SM put meets expectations instead of exceeds when I do it all what to expect for my raise.
How serious is the DM about truck paperwork? Ours is being falsified.
Does anyone have issue with SA and LSA having respect for you and what you say. If I tell them this is what needs to be done tonight I get waved off or tell someone to change their shirt because it’s not uniform I just get completely ignored. What do you guys do when this happens?
Hi!
My title is an LSA! I’ve been in the process of stocking, and seem to do well and make those around me, happy in that department so that makes me feel good that I’m doing my part! The only worry I have is, this weekend I’m closing (with another thankfully) and maybe even getting trained on the register.
The only issue? I’m terrible with math! I’m fine with talking to others, I’m a social butterfly and like to think I’m bubbly, so that’s no an issue for me, but the thing counting and making sure I’m giving the right amount of change to the customer and store is what makes my stomach do somersaults! I’m anxious to mess up as this is my first retail job, and I want to do well along side my other coworkers who work so hard.
Do you have any advice, or pointers that could help, not only in cashier, but maybe other key pointers too?
Sincerely, a determined but nervous wreck!
I see some lights, but no cameras. Do they disguse their cameras as something? Do you have videofeed of the dumpster area?
Our DM threatened to terminate everyone for not being available to cover a shift on our day off. The whole "policy" of
"If you call out it's your responsibility to get your shift covered. If you don't find coverage, you're still responsible for coming in. If you don't come in, it's a write up for no call no show" caused a good LSA to quit on spot when nobody was available to cover their shift.
I don't blame them. Still, nobody was available to cover the shift. So the SM called the DM to ask for help finding a closer and he chewed her out, said he wasn't gonna come close our store, and threatened to terminate everyone.
Shift needing coverage was closing key. I know it is ultimately the SMs responsibility, but if nobody is available to cover the shift, including SM, what's the REAL policy on how to handle the situation? Is the opening MOD responsible for pulling an involuntary double? That doesn't sit right with me either.
Would anyone know the proper way to handle this? A brand new hire was thrown on the shift with NO training, closing with a minor SA, in case you were wondering how it got resolved.
For DG employees.. what are you thoughts on penny shoppers?
Do associates get vacation days?
As this post entails, I was let go and I was dreading this day but according to my SM I was let go because I was 44 bucks short on my till. Her boss called her and told her to call me to tell me I'm being let go. This isn't the first time I've been over or short and I guess this was their last straw with me.
I'm very open about how there are days where I'm off a few bucks or cents (and trust me, it is never done purposely I'm just not very good with counting in my head) and while one of the key carriers there tried to vouch for me when I was over or short, unfortunately this time it would not save my behind.
The last shift that I worked, the key carrier present on my shift suspected it was a system error. But unfortunately the DM or SM may have not thought that.
At least I can say it did not end on a bad note as the SM told me I could use her as a reference. I don't know if I should celebrate (because there was some stuff that went on there that led me to be posting in here lol) or be sad because that was the first work place to ever show me kindness even with all the mess that went on there.
Just a few minutes ago, the SM told everyone in the work chats to stop using the work chats likely to make a new one that I am not in. Makes me a little sad to be honest.
But what do y'all think?
All the stores in my area have disabled self checkout but still leave them powered on. Anyone know why they would do this? Most of them have been turned into displays with small items stacked on top.
Expiration date is for 2 weeks out. I saw a post about this topic a year ago. But why is this still happening. I've experienced this twice now in the past month.
it just sounds dumb. the end.
The DM ( I assume it was the DM as the SM is female) must have been bored as he was watching the cameras ( he was not in the store) and over the store speaker accused two people of shoplifting going so far as to describe the clothes they were wearing. He told them to drop everything they had and leave the store or he would call the police. Funny thing is I was in the same aisle as them and they had nothing concealed, no bags or large purse, their jackets were completely unzipped, no bulging pockets. Then the DM, over the speaker, said "police have been dispatched". Needless to say the couple was extremely embarrassed for being called thieves in front of the entire store and left. Do they have a case for filing for libel since they were accused of shoplifting in front of all the customers and were in the aisle still shopping when this happened.
Editing to add more info. It was not the automated security announcement. It was a male speaking about two specific people (described what they were wearing) and accusing them of shoplifting over the store speaker.
Edit 2: First time I have heard of interface security but it is possible this was them. But the question is can they be held liable for calling out a specific person(s) for shoplifting over the store speaker system where everyone in the store can hear it.
Hi everyone! Just looking for answers because I’m anxious over my hard earned dollar lmao. I use chime to get my direct deposit two days early. I normally receive my paycheck within the hour of 12 but it hasn’t shown even when my coworkers have been paid. Anyone have any idea what may be happening?
What are the reward points for on Elevate/Axonify?
My fiancée is a manager at dg and has been for about 5 months now. At first she was required to work 42 hours a week. Which is fine. But then after about a month she was told she had to work 48 hours a week. And just last week after one of her sales associates quit she was told that she can’t hire a replacement and now has to work 54 hours a week because they don’t have enough hours. How is a company so big so dead set on being so greedy. Even though she’s salary she (technically) makes less than her asm. Her salary cut down into hourly it would be 18.70 an hour and her asm is making 20 per hour. Absolutely outrageous.
I went in to dollar gen near my house, and I was going to get a greendot card as I have in the past but I noticed this spendwell card i never heard of had only a $1 activation so I bought it and put $40 on it and left. I bought it at 7:00pm and not it is past 9pm. I need to pay a bill and I think I made the wrong decision, when will the money arrive in my account?
