This subreddit is aimed at documentary producers around the world, Europe, South & North America, Asia, Africa,... It is about financing your project, finding co-producers, pitching forums and workshops, broadcasters and general how-to or advice.
Please note that this is not the place for plugging your crowdfunding campaign nor where to get technical help on what specific equipment to use. For the latter we suggest /r/filmmakers and /r/videography.

Hi! For a short film I'll be interviewing my dad on a personal topic. I wanna do some research on unique documentaries or just interviews in general, where the host and interviewee are doing something while talking. This can be anything- just not sitting still. I think doing something while talking can take the pressure off of saying the right words, so I'm considering this for the interview with my dad (which will be only recorded through audio tho).
Also am looking for unique documentary-styles in general. The crazier the better, it doesn't have to be cinematic or professional-looking at all.
Title: "Spectrum of Voices"

I have decades worth of research, evidence, and content related to a true crime case. It involves prosecutorial corruption and police abuse. It’s all been vetted and is ready for the story to be told. Film making is not my forte’ as I am an early childhood educator. I am, however , passionate about exposing the truth. I need help desperately. The corruption has destroyed many lives. I need direction on how to go about this venture. Thank you.
Hello. I'm looking for a tape that is released by FAA Press conference. and i find the tape audio exerpt was used on NBC NEWS, ABC NEWS. and i'm guessing that NBC,ABC News has all conference video. So i tried to get original nbc news footage but i can't find that anywhere. NBC UNIVERSAL Archives only provide Edited news footage ,not an original video source footage. however i have got that footage in conus archive but it's not full footage but edited footage too like nbc archive's footage... So How can i get original news footage of ABC,NBC?? Is there anyone knowing about that?
How do you go about pitching an idea for a documentary? I think I may have a story.
I am a 25 year old filmmaker and YouTuber from Japan.
I have worked on numerous corporate films as a sole proprietor in Japan.
I am also currently based in Australia and have experience in overseas filmmaking.
I would like to move to the US in a year with a J1 Visa and work for a video production company in the US.
I am looking for a company to be a host company for my visa, so if any company is interested in my work and skills, please contact me.
Producer suggested I backup to Dropbox and Google and on a 2tb thumb, and finding PC software to sync it all, but any good suggestions and insights appreciated
This is for a project I am working on called Recap. This video in particular shows me growing up, and then flashes images of myself getting younger next to me as I am today.
The Recap Project is an upcoming docuseries that goes through the lives of people who use creativity to promote positivity. Showing the lives of aspiring creators, artists, film makers, musicians, and more!
First episode will be about me, as it branches off, leading to more stories about others as it goes on.
The project is currently on Indiegogo, and you can find the link in the description of this video.
Don't forget to subscribe to the channel, like the video, share it (with the Indiegogo link), and ring that bell to be notified of more videos.
Hey everyone,
I mande a short doc on a circus performer and would love to receive some constructive criticism. It's only 3 minutes long. If you care to watch, here's the link: https://youtu.be/lCnjnVcBaJU?si=vhmR7BHvKKt_K8lI
Thank you for your time and I'm looking forward to reading your thoughts.
Cheers
Hey everyone,
I have been recording videos my entire life but always with friends and just for fun. I would like to try to make something a bit more... considered. Not necessarily professional, just thought out.
There is a bagel place near my house. It has been there for over 30 years run by the same people. It is a real hole in the wall, cash only spot. I want to make a portrait of the place. Just for history's sake. And because I really like the folks. I would want it to be less than 5 minutes in length.
My question is.. what do I do? I don't really have a story. How does one do a portrait in film? If anyone has any advice or insight it would be much appreciated. I would just like to capture the coolness of this place in its time, maybe show some of the people who make it possible. Just a portrait of a business. Thoughts? Thanks in advance
About 30 years ago I was starting out developing potential projects and I DV'd some interviews, some of the interviewees are now deceased. I was new to the game then and concocted a fairly weak waiver which I had them sign, probably wouldn't hold up legally.
Is a waiver required at all for a deceased individual, since (I believe) upon death they lose their right to privacy, defamation, false light, loss of earnings etc.?
Does anyone here NOT pay a nominal fee to interviewees, and if so, doesn't that somewhat negate the "for valuable consideration" part of a industry standard waiver?
I'm assuming it's fine and you simply can't use the footage if they won't sign a release, but the producer is concerned about going this route--though he's used to working on Hollywood feature films, rather than small shoestring budget documentaries.
We would then arrange to do a "real" sit-down interview with the subject to be shot with pro gear at a later time... just trying to catch that initial reconnection without freaking the subject out with a film crew.
