J'envisage d'acheter le diurnal latin-romain de l'abbaye de Barroux pour avoir une traduction à côté du latin quand je prie selon le rite Romain traditionnel. J'ai déjà leur diurnal format poche, que j'aime bien pour ses dimensions, mais qui est à la fois d'une qualité qui me fait douter de sa longévité. Est-ce que quelqu'un de vous a de l'expérience avec les diurnales de Barroux de format plus grande (normal) (surtout le diurnal romain latin-français, ou d'autres)? Et quant à la traduction, laquelle est utilisée? Est-elle fidèle ou plutôt une interprétation? Merci d'avance.

Liturgy of the Hour sets go above 100 dollars, around 150-ish. Does anyone know of some sets which may be more affordable or on sale?

I collect Catholic litrugical books (especially breviaries, Divine Office, missals, etc.) to create a physical timeline for teaching/show-and-telling the rich history of the Church.

Some of these books are hard to find and/or are expensive (e.g., The Roman Breviary edited by Bede Babo, Baronius Press' Roman Breviary). I know you can get some of these books as PDFs or from Lulu.com, but it doesn't spark the same interest from visitors or have the same appeal as a bookshelf with original books.

So, if you want to get rid of some books, let me know. Any books for which I have duplicates on, I donate them to parishes that want/need them so I'm always on the search.

So this is the first year I bought an Ordo for my diocese. Looking at it it appears to provide sufficient information to pray the LOTH. So since I also bought the Saint Joseph Guide, I was thinking of giving it away to a friend, but before I did I just thought I would come here to ask people more experienced than myself if I was missing anything. Does the Saint Joseph Guide provide any information lacking in the Ordo, itself?

P.S. I live in the U.S. and the Ordo I am talking about is the one published by Paulist Press, so it's not like the barebones Ordo published by Libreria Editrice Vaticana.

Question in title. I really don't like most of the changes, especially phrases like "Núntius celso véniens Olýmpo" instead of "Núntius cælo véniens suprémo" (from the hymn Ut queant) which makes these ancient purely Christian hymns seem like baroque / neo-classical compositions, so I'd like to sing the original hymns when I pray Roman 1960..! Thanks.

The Roman Rite Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary contains at Matins an 'absolutio': Précibus et méritis beátæ Maríæ semper Vírginis et ómnium Sanctórum, perdúcat nos Dóminus ad regna cælórum. I wonder why this absolution seems to be a Roman rite only feature (it does not appear in the Carmelite or Dominican Little Office). Also, I wonder why it says "regna cælorum". Scripture does speak interchangeably about "heaven" (cælum) and "the heavens" (cæli), but there is only one kingdom (regnum), right (not two regna)? The phrase "regna cælorum" does not appear in the Vulgate. What does this plural here mean?

What is the best advice you have received for how to pray the Psalms well and keep your attention on them? Bonus points if you give examples for different genres of Psalms

Hello everyone, I recently got all four volumes of the Liturgy of the Hours and I am having trouble understanding what I need to pray each day. I’ve been trying to the St Joseph guide but it hasn’t been much of a help for me, as I just don’t understand what I’m reading honestly. Can someone help me ?

I'm curious how others have felt guided in developing a regular practice of praying the hours while balancing our commitments to work and family life. For myself, I continue to desire to pray the hours, but it sometimes feels unrealistic due to my other needs: a whole nights sleep, daily exercise, work, mental prayer, kids activities, and the list continues. On one hand, perhaps I need to resolve myself to live more disciplined and on the other perhaps this desire is not a movement of God but a concealed movement toward inevitable burnout and disappointment.

What do you think? For context, I am a father of five children under seven and a small business owner that makes his own schedule.

So, I'm sure you all remember the original edition of the Divine Worship; Daily Office... I may be one of the few blokes who actually enjoyed that one LOL

Though I would like to have a few more copies so my family can pray together, is there any chance somebody on this sub may have a few extra copies they would be willing to part with for a small price? It's been nearly impossible to find any online

Does anyone know if any PDFs exist online of an early 20th- or late 19th-century, pre-Divino Afflatu Roman breviary in one volume (ie, not divided into seasonal volumes)?

I have one from 1954 (with the Bea psalter). I have the study edition of the 1570 breviary (with all the abbreviations and moveable type printing). I'm looking for something like this to work off of for a project, but pre-Pius X.

I use the one volume Christian Prayer to pray Morning and Evening prayer, but I notice that the readings in it are longer than the ones in the four volumes set. Is this according to official rubrics, or is that something that the publishers of the one volume took random liberty to do?

I've noticed that Lauds and Vespers have these in the Monastic breviary, but not the Roman. It's a bit odd because all the little hours have them.

So what's the history here? Were these added later to the monastic, or lost in the Roman? Is the content unique to the monastic now, or is it material that the Roman uses elsewhere?

Hi, I had a question about the Chapter Office in religious order liturgies historically.

I know the Monastic Office and Dominican preserve a part at the end where there's a psalm and some versicles for the dead, and they say "commemoration of all the deceased members of our order" or something like that.

I had some questions:

1. the Dominican office mentions the reading of the obit of a deceased master general, or an anniversary, but it's unclear to me where these would be inserted.

2. did the Roman office ever have anything like this? It seems to be hinted at with the place held by the versicle "Fidelium anime" which is sort of shoved in at the very end.

3. in the Middle Ages at least I know there were "Necrologies" which were catalogs of the dead, sort of parallel to the Martyrology, and read at this section of the chapter office. How exactly would that have worked? Where exactly would this reading off of names of those who had died on that date have been inserted, and in what form?

Apologies for what is something of a tangent when it comes to posts but I didn't know where else to ask this. So I've been putting together my own Diurnale on Lulu, it's good to go, except I really want to put an image on the front like a Marian monogram or an IHS or something, in the same colour as the title font. But whenever I paste the image it has a white background and I don't know how to remove the background, or make it see-through or change the colour of the actual image to match the cover lettering. Is anyone more savvy with images able to help me, please? Again, I'm sorry that this isn't actually a post based on the traditional office per se, but I'm trying to make an aesthetically pleasing version for myself and I've seen other people's creations and didn't know where else to ask this silly technical question. Or any general info really (e.g., how many volumes, whether there will be a single volume similar to the current Christian Prayer, if there are any materials already published). I've seen a couple of posts here talking about the different variations found through the Benedictine Order in regards to their practice of the divine office. One situation I haven't seen commented upon is that of de Clarival Abbey and its new foundation at Sloginac Abbey. They have an interesting set up where the conventual mass is celebrated in the Novus Ordo(albeit not concelebrated, in latin, and ad orientem) while the rest of the monks celebrate their daily low masses according to the TLM. I was wondering if anyone had any information on what form of the monastic breviary they use.

Today (October 8) is Our Lady of the Rosary in my diocese. There is no mentioning of the rosary in the LOTH for this memorial. I just don't understand how you can celebrate Our Lady of the Rosary without mentioning the rosary.

Should the rosary not be mentioned because it is Liturgy?

I have the three volume, Baronius press set of the traditional Roman Breviary (Breviarum Romanum). Now, I haven’t really gotten into the rhythm of praying it as much thou I would like to. One obstacle I have is that I use a lot of time passing back and forth because I CAN’T FIND the COLLECT for mon-sat Lauds and Vespers!

There are collects for the small hours. Collects for the memorials, feasts and solemnities, and the different times like lent, advent, Christmas, Easter… but no ordinary time (time after Pentecost)! Or, I can’t find them!

Please help. I’m looking everywhere in these books but I just seem to miss it!

Is there any news regarding new English translations from the English Speaking Conference of the Order of Friars Minor for the Proper texts for Franciscan Saints and Blesseds in the LOTH?

It would be nice if they will update the current 1975 English translations to conform with Liturgiam Authenticam and harmonize with the soon to be published Liturgy of the Hours: Second Edition.
