Questions about deserts and camels

I am writing a fantasy book based in the desert that features camels and caravans. I've done some research but still have some questions I'm struggling to get answers for. (The timeframe for this book is before the discovery of gunpowder)

How long would a caravan sleep for? My research tells me that they would rest during the hottest hours of the day and travel during the coolest including night.

What do the people leading the caravans eat? All I have found is a flatbread baked in charcoal call taguella. Keeping food fresh must be a challenge in the desert.

Is it true that only male camels are used for packing, and the females are reserved for breeding?

What is camel wool like? How does it compare to sheeps wool? Is it warmer, softer?

I've read that camels can be very affectionate. How do they show this to humans?

Ball of sap??

Hey all! I was hiking in the Oh My God region of New Mexico today and found a small sphere on the ground that looked like it had sap on it. It had a firm but soft texture, this is a photo of it after I pulled it apart. Does anyone know what this could’ve been?

Camel wool vs Sheep's wool

Hello, I'm writing a story and doing a bit of research into certain aspect of it.

Right now I'm writing about a middle Eastern camel and I was wondering what a camel wool is like in comparison to sheep's wool? It is softer or courser?

Desert experts, are there any American deserts reminiscent of deserts in the Middle East?

Obviously there would still be differences, but is there any desert in the US that would give me a similar experience to being in the Middle East? Huge dunes, that sort of thing?

Blooms 3/27?

Will any deserts be in bloom around mid next week? Considering a road trip, but that's the soonest I'd get there and wondering if I'd miss it.
