Denison University

So about 8 or so years ago I slipped on some black ice outside of Granville, Ohio. I’m actually from that town but someone stopped on the highway to help me with my car (by the age I’m assuming a Denison student) and I refused insisting someone would be there to help me soon, but I just have thought about the stranger ever since then. Hoping for some leads even if it’s unlikely!

ED vs RD? ....can't afford the Price Tag!

I'm super interested in Denison but I ran the numbers and (without asking any of my stats) it spit out $48K as my 'out of pocket cost'; can't afford that! So, obviously can't apply ED since I wouldn't know of any merit aid/scholarships until way after. So, any advice on how much lower my chances for admission would be if I went RD?

For reference, I'd like to study biology and/or biochem. I'm a domestic student, not 1st generation, female, with a gpa is 3.9uw/4.2w and SAT is 1400. Do you think my chances for admission if going RD would be much lower vs ED? Also, if you feel comfortable please share or DM me with your total cost after merit [I saw some posts from earlier this year with multiple international admits mentioning surprisingly low COA, like in the low $20K?!?!]. Wondering if I should stop dreaming and just move on to lower cost schools or if Denison is merit generous and there is hope for affordability?

Would You Visit a Cat Café in Granville?

*UPDATE* This gained a lot more traction than I expected! I added one question at the bottom of the survey that gives the option of submitting your email. If you are interested in receiving updates about the project via mailing list, please submit another survey with only your email! Thanks for your time!

Hello Denison folks! I am not a student, but I am trying to gauge interest in potentially opening a cat café in the area and would love your input! If you would be willing to take a brief survey it would help me out greatly and would be much appreciated :)

Alternative subcultures at Denison?

Been considering going to Denison as they've offered me to play football but one thing I'm really worried about is the lack of alt subcultures at the school. I'm from Massachusetts so there's a huge scene here of basically everything you can think of (Goths, Punks, Emos, etc.) especially in Boston with all the schools and historic venues there. I know there's some places in Columbus that have some Punk/Hardcore shows but I want to know if the student body has a decent amount of alternative people. I'd honestly probably hate 4 years of living there if I couldn't talk to anybody about going to shows, the music, or the lifestyles in general. Any response is appreciated, thank you.

Finding Argentine Denisonians

I am an incoming freshman and I would like to connect with someone from Argentina at Denison. I looked at the Denison book website (new faces at denison) for someone from the class of 28 but found no one. Is there any students from Argentina going to Denison this fall? Feel free to leave a comment or dm me!

Foreign Language Requirement

I am very interested in Denison University and it is currently my #1 college. However, I have only taken a single year American Sign Language. My high school considers my IB Buisness class as a language so I hadn't seen a reason to take ASL again as I had a lack of interest in it. Does applying to Denison require me to take 2 years of a single language? I understand I need to take a language while at Denison and Im okay with that. Id just rather not take ASL another year. Thank you for your help guyes!

Textbook questions?

I am an incoming first year. In your opinion, what’s more useful physical textbooks or etextbooks? I can see advantages to both, but wanted to get other opinions. Thank you.

Dorm furniture

I've been trying to buy organizational supplies for my dorm, but it is difficult without knowing the dimensions of the furniture. Does anyone know the approximate sizes of desks/ dressers? I cannot find it anywhere on MyDenison. (I'm in Crawford if that makes a difference)

Dorm purchasing tip for incoming first years

I’m a rising junior and first year fellow, and I thought it could be helpful to provide what I’ve been telling my orientation group! Denison is 4 years residential, which means you’ll be using the same typical dorm stuff for 4 years, whereas at a big university stuff like a shower caddy and mini fridge might as well be disposable after one year. Basically, if you have the means, buy the higher quality/longer lasting items if you can- My favorites are my on-sale name brand mattress pad, strong mesh shower caddy, cushy(!) rubber shower sandals($15ish on Amazon), and wayfair washable rug. Also, living in a dorm can be rough so little quality of life improvements make a huge difference.

GC 101 Commerce and Society requires minimal experience in french?

I'm an incoming international student and just received an email of my personalized Denison bookstore. Going through the list, GC 101 Commerce and Society requires three textbooks, but two are related to French. There were no prerequisites to take this course when I registered; the only French experience for me was learning it by Duolingo for a few months. So does anyone have ideas if this course would also need some handful of experience in French or would it be just instructed fully in English?

Science professor insight?

Hi! I’m an upcoming freshman looking to join a science lab in the future. My advisor told me it would be a good idea to look into different professors research to find a lab I’d be interested in. Does anyone have recommendations for professors I should look into? And what professors are good to work with? I’m mostly interested in chemistry, neuroscience and physics, but I’d love any suggestions!

Is there a provision to store items over winter and summer breaks?

I’m an international student, and I’ll have to buy most dorm essentials after reaching granville. Since students are required to vacate their dorms over summer and winter break, would I be able to store these items anywhere?

Refrigerator?

Hello! Mom of incoming freshman here. Looking for info on a mini fridge in the dorm room?

Other kids’ schools rent them. This does not seem to be standard operating practice at Denison. What do the students do?

Questions from an Incoming First-Year

Hello! I have a number of questions about Denison as a first year student figuring out what they need to bring.

  1. I know there are kitchens in each of the dorm halls but how well stocked are they in terms of cooking utensils? Do they have pots, cutting boards, spatulas, knives, or do you have to supply everything yourself?

  2. Should I bring my bike? I won’t have my own car on campus and I enjoy biking for fun but I’m not sure it’s worth it. Also, are there indoor spaces to store bikes?

  3. Should I get a computer than runs MacOS or Windows? I’m already in the Apple ecosystem so I’m leaning towards a MacBook Air with the M3 chip but want to make sure it’s worth the investment. Incase it’s relevant, I’m currently planning on majoring in DA, math, or econ and if I change to something outside of those, it’ll still be in STEM.

  4. How safe is campus and the surrounding town? Is there anything in particular that I need to worry about?

Heavy STEM first year courseload question

Is it typical for a first year student to be placed in math 145 along with two science courses (which have labs) first semester? DA is the intended major but didn’t get put in DA101 or CS. Seems to be a lot to be in physics and chem. Meeting via zoom with advisor but the emails seem to indicate you are likely stuck with assigned classes.
