Virtual Learning and Breakout Room Use in Undergraduate College/University Classes Survey

Hi r/Decorah

We are a pair of computer science graduate students at Clemson University who are studying perceptions of teamwork in online undergraduate classroom breakout rooms.

We ran a pilot study earlier this year with our own student body and would like to expand it now to other 4-year, 2-year, and online colleges/universities.

We are hoping that by posting here, more students/professors from community/technical colleges and universities in the surrounding area will see this and we can expand our participant pool.

To participate in this survey you must be one of the following:

  • 18+ undergraduate student who was enrolled or currently enrolled in an a class offered via Zoom, Teams, or other video conferencing software
  • 18+ professor
  • 18+ graduate student teaching assistant or teacher of record

Survey Link: https://clemson.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_29z4pkHfVfYtyUS

This is an institutionally approved IRB study. If there are any questions, please reach out via DMs.

Food delivery?

So I’m in town for work and planned on being here for the next week or so. I haven’t had any luck with door dash or Uber eats. Is there some other service that gets used or am I in the stone ages out here?

Missing KDEC

Just posting because I want to complain. I miss 100.5 KDEC. Yes, not everyone has the same musical tastes, KDHK HawkRock isn't my jam. There are plenty of rock stations in NE Iowa, not many adult alternative. Obviously the station doesn't have the same feel either. I've also tried KMRV out of Waukon (same parent), its slightly better, but not much. Yeah, yeah, I'm old... get off my grass.

I'm not local so I used to stream KDEC to stay in touch with the community and listen to good music. Oh well... this was to be expected after the sale. Time to move on I guess.

Appreciation

This isn't exactly a bustling subreddit, but I wanted to post anyway to express my appreciation for this area. I grew up nearby but due to a number of reasons, have moved quite some distance. Every year I come back with my kids for a few weeks at a time to spend time with family. And each time I'm reminded what a magnificent gem this place truly is. Vibrant community. Wonderful scenery.

Of course every place has their pluses and minuses and not living here every day I'm sure I can't see a lot of that. But right now, I very much enjoy spending time here.

In time I will return to the Midwest, but regardless of where I am, Decorah holds a very special place.

Help finding apartment rentals.

Hello everyone, My fiance recently got a job in Decorah so we will be moving to the area soon. We both went to Luther for college so we know the area fairly well but we are having trouble locating rental listings online. We have found some classified listings but seeing as we are not local at the moment it would be a big help to be able to see options beyond just a classified that says "two bedrooms, pay water and electric" and then just a phone number. Does anyone know if there is a website that may have listings on a map? Or do we just have to find a weekend to get down there and arrange as many tours as we can find?

Any help is much appreciated!

How is the ground at Pulpit Rock Campground?

I want to tent camp there this weekend, but am wondering how wet the ground is. Have you been getting a lot of rain like we have in Des Moines?

How's T-Mobile service in Decorah these days?

Hi everyone!

I'll be in Decorah for Nordic Fest once again at the end of the month. I'm in the area 1-2 times a year visiting in-laws, and so far I've never had cell phone service out there (I've always had T-Mobile or Sprint via Cricket/Virgin Mobile). T-Mobile said they were supposed to have the area covered by the end of 2017, but when I was there for Christmas, I'd be lucky to get a momentary blip of service at my wife's aunt's house west of 52. T-Mobile said they're working on enabling some other band in the area that isn't as fast, but better coverage. Haven't been back since.

So, any T-Mobile subscribers in the area? Is it usable, or do I have to load up my Verizon hotspot that I use in the Colorado mountains?

Thanks!

Camping in Decorah (looking for suggestions)

Some friends and I are planning a camping trip to Decorah next week and I was hoping to pick some brains for suggestions to make it great.

We are hoping to stay at Pulpit Rock for tent camping. We like to cycle and canoe. We like good food and beer. We like free and inexpensive activities that will show us what Northeast Iowa is like. I reckon those are good reasons to camp in Decorah, and the internet has lots of information, but if someone has some excellent ideas or past experiences in the area, anything would be helpful and appreciated!

Thanks, everybody!

Finding a rental from 500 miles away

As my title would suggest, I'm looking for a rental home in or near Decorah. I've just accepted a job in Cresco, but I still live approximately 500 miles from NE Iowa. Needless to say, finding a place to live without being able to go out and physically search will be a challenge. I've checked the classifieds, Facebook marketplace, buy/sell/rent pages, craigslist, letgo, zillow, apartment finder, etc, and I have come up with next to nothing. Is there a trick to finding a good, affordable rental in this town? I am open to any suggestions and will be ever grateful for any leads. Thanks!

Interesting hotel/motel?

I'll be in Decorah for a family reunion and have no idea what I should do for an overnight stay. Any suggestions for a hotel/motel either in Decorah or in the area?

Edit: Bed&Breakfasts are good too!

I created a Facebook group (Decorah Area Gamers) since it's cheaper than a meetup, it's for gamers of any kind and not solely dedicated to Luther or Gamesexp. Anyone can join from around the area.

The group is for any kind of gamers. The description reads "This is a group for anyone in the Greater Decorah Area to join that is interested in any kind of gaming, be it tabletop RPGs, board games, modern video games or retro games, LARPing, or even card games. You can be from Spillville, Cresco, Calmar, Ridgeway or even in Rochester, everyone is welcome!"

I'd love a few new members so maybe I can one day find a group to play D&D with.

Looking to upgrade 25 year old air conditioner, suggestions for local contractor?

Looking to get something to replace a 25 year old air conditioner. I have a total budget of $3000. Anyone know of a decent local contractor who I can buy the unit from and have install as well? It would be nice if they did plumbing as well, if I can stretch the $3000 to cover a new water heater too that'd be great.

Any pen & paper RPGers in/near Decorah?

Finally getting settled in after moving here and now I'm looking to find a group to play some RPGs. I'm experienced with D&D, Pathfinder, Deadlines Reloaded, and the new Star Wars RPG by FFG. I'm willing to learn just about any system too.

Anybody willing to do a quick walkthrough of a house to give general opinions on it before we fill out a rental application?

We're moving to Decorah the second week in August and we'd like to not be homeless. We have a potential house to rent and the landlord would prefer to have someone walk through it so we don't rent "sight unseen". Would anyone be willing to go through the house and give us unbiased opinion before we sign a rental agreement?

Family and I are trying to move to the area, anyone have info on houses for rent and/or jobs in the area that my wife could apply for?

We're trying to get out to the area in the next couple of months on a shoestring budget. We've been perusing online classifieds for housing but haven't really seen anything for us. My wife will also be looking for a job. Her previous experience has been working in child care. She has a bachelor's degree.

Would anyone happen to have any information?

"Bikes vs Cars" Documentary Is Screening June 12th

The Green Iowa AmeriCorps team through the Winneshiek Energy District is excited to present "Bikes vs Cars" on Friday, June 12 in Decorah. "Bikes vs Cars" is a brand new documentary that premiered in March and is currently only available to see through the film festival circuit and specially-arranged screenings.

Please join us for this one-night-only screening, taking place in the Vesterheim Museum courtyard on Water Street. The showing is free and open to everyone thanks to generous sponsorship by Oneota Film Festival, Oneota Community Food Co-op, Decorah Bicycles, Decorah Human Powered Trails, and Luther College's Center for Sustainable Communities.

We encourage you to walk or 'bike-in' to the movie, but please bring a chair or blanket for seating.

The film will begin at 8pm on June 12th. It's approximately 90 minutes in length.

The Green Iowa team believes the message of the film will resonate with Decorah-area residents, as bicycling is a part of the city's culture.

The synopsis is below. We hope to see you at the screening!

The bicycle is an amazing tool for change. Activists and cities all over the world are moving towards a new system. But will the economic powers allow it? It’s an uneven fight. Activists and politicians that work for change are facing powerful interests who gain from the private car investing billions each year on lobbying and advertising to protect their business.

The world needs radical changes to save the climate and the environment, but the car industry is selling more cars than ever. Today there are one billion cars in the world. By 2020, that number will double.

The film follows the individuals around the world that are dedicated to creating change. From bike activists in Sao Paulo and Los Angeles, fighting for safe bike lanes, to the City of Copenhagen, where forty percent of citizens commute by bike daily, "Bikes vs Cars" will look at both the struggle for bicyclists in a society dominated by cars, and the revolutionary changes that could take place if more cities moved away from car-centric models and became more bike-friendly.
