Help. I'm Too Inept To Find Streamable Ben Gibbard Live Performances.

I’m an old, lazy fan who loves every stripped-down guitar-and-singer Ben Gibbard performance I’ve ever heard. However I lack the simple everyday stills to find a live performance or collection of live songs to stream or buy.

For example, I love all the live songs from KEXP (https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=ben+gibbard+kexp) but I am looking for something I can listen to in my car or kitchen smart speaker.

I'd like to avoid playing youtube in my car or downloading tools from the dark web to burn songs. Feel free to begin all your responses with "OK Boomer".

HELP! Album mistaken for Deathcab

Help! There is an album by a band I am searching for… the band had a record that was mistaken as an unreleased Death Cab for Cutie album, but it wasn’t Death Cab. One of the singles/title tracks had a lyric that went something along the lines of “I held your hair as you threw up”. It went on to state about sharing a drag of your cigarette, etc. I’ve lost my CD, and can’t find it on the web~. Please help reconnect the dots!!

Looking for a song

Looking for a DCFC demo (I think) that I found back in like 2007 while downloading their catalogue on limewire.

It starts with a bunch of weird cymbals from the drummer (no other instruments) and then I can’t remember the rest. I think it’s an early demo but I remember that I sounded pretty weird compared to their other songs. Anyone recognize?

Anyone else prefer Thank You for Today over Asphalt Meadows?

This isn't intended to throw Asphalt Meadows under the bus, because I love that album too. I don't think this band has any weak albums. I just noticed over time I'm returning to Thank You for Today more.

On an unrelated note, has anyone else noticed Thank You for Today mirrors the name of the band?

Title Track - Grenache Fest 11/9

Sharing this from a super small wine festival at the end of last year in Walla Walla, WA where Ben played solo. I’ve seen DCFC several times and they’re always incredible but this was very special. There was maybe 100 people in the room at most at a time so I enjoyed seeing him from just a few feet away and getting a really intimate experience.

President of what - keys - sheet music

My son loves this band and is learning piano. He wants to learn a song on keys that I can play along on guitar. I don’t have a good enough ear to figure it for him. Anybody have notes on how Chris plays it on keys? Thanks

iPod Playlist Throw-Back

Update on my previous post where I showed you all the mixed tape I made for my husband. Back in high school. I just got my old iPod working again (just needed to buy a new cord for $6!) and found the playlist I burned on the CD. The nostalgia is choking me up. Anyone else still have a functioning iPod?

Best Death Cab song for a lullaby?

My husband and I have been together for 17 years since high school, and Death Cab has always been our favorite band. We recently became parents and we've started singing death cab songs to our baby to make him sleepy. My favorite so far has been Bixby Canyon Bridge because it's really mellow and I know all the words. My husband likes Talking Bird as a lullaby. What are some other death cab songs that you think would make a good lullaby? We are most familiar with songs from transatlanticism, plans, narrow stairs, and codes and keys, so those would be the easiest songs for us to remember all of the lyrics, but we're open to other suggestions as well!

Edit: Thank you for all of the suggestions! I've tried several of them today (baby was pretty fussy so I had lots of opportunities)-

  1. Passenger seat - this was the most popular suggestion I think. I really liked this one and it is short and easy to remember, super mellow.

  2. I will follow you into the dark - great suggestion, nice and mellow and I know all of the words.

  3. Such great heights - I love this song but I needed to look up the lyrics. I'm not sure if I'll be able to remember them all.

  4. Grapevine Fires - LOVE this song and I forgot to mention this has been in my rotation too. Very good length for a lullaby in my opinion and I know the words already.

  5. Marching bands of Manhattan - I walked down the aisle to the vitamin string quartet version of this song, and I love it, but for some reason I can never remember how it starts so that's a tough one for me. When I looked up the lyrics I thought it made a good lullaby though

  6. Lack of color - super mellow, liked this one, don't know the lyrics as well.

A few of your suggestions I'm not familiar with, so I'll be looking them up soon! Thanks again!

"Give Up" records -- is it worth it to get a scalped copy?

I've been looking for a hot minute to find a pressing of Give Up that wasn't absurdly overpriced. A lot of really neat colored pressings are being resold, but you can immediately tell that these sellers are pretty much only in it to scalp (predictably). There are a couple sellers on Ebay that are pricing more reasonably, with the blue/silver 20th anniversary pressing going for about $46 plus roughly $5 shipping, so a grand total of $51 before taxes. It's a pretty penny, but it's relatively much cheaper than other variants.

That's not to say that the other variants aren't lovely. I'd do heinous things to get my hands on one of the limited purple ones. I'm a big fan of funky colored vinyl and pretty much always will spend a couple extra bucks to pick out a colored or patterned variant that I really like. But the purple records are going for $71 at the lowest... and that's a lot for a single LP. But it is a collector's edition item, so I guess I should have come to expect that? I get that these people are trying to make a quick buck off of fans, but I don't love the practice of scalping. I just don't think it's really fair, but that's my personal/ethical gripe as a collector who likes pretty colored records.

I will absolutely settle for whatever copies I can get my hands on. It's not a huge deal at the end of the day, Give Up is an album that I just want to have on physical media. Is it worth it to get a scalped copy?

This goes for DCFC albums too, I just noticed that this is an issue particularly with reselling Give Up.

Thanks y'all, hope you're having a good day and thanks for entertaining my little quandary :)

There are no bad albums, but a Ben Gibbard tier list composed entirely of S’s-C’s would be boring.

Top 50 Alt & Indie Guitarists of All Time - Chris Walla #26

I can't speak for anyone else, but I personally have had Grapevine Fires stuck in my head since 2009, so I would say this is well deserved.
