New album

What’s the best guess on the timeline? Anniversary is over. I’m definitely ready for what’s next. Or is an EP of cut Asphalt Meadows material more likely? It seemed like the acoustic album kind of replaced their usual EP.

Underrated song recs?

I'm a new fan, and trying to get into DCFC properly, but my god they have so many albums! And EPs! A blessing, of course, but takes a while to listen to all of it. What are some underrated songs I should prioritise listening to? :)

Ben Gibbard Interview in 1996

Hey all, when I was a teenager living in Kitsap County, WA, we convinced Pinwheel (Ben's band pre-Death Cab) to come down and play a show at a local community center. I had the recording of this on a DVD and I finally got around to putting it up on YouTube. It's embarrassing as all get out for me (the interview is mega-cringey), but I figured that some of you would be interested in seeing the performance.

I wanna see your Death-Cab-themed username

Comment if you got one, let's see 'em!

Would be lovely if you could explain why you chose the name too. But no pressure.

Mine's a little bit obscure, but it's not that difficult really (if you're a Death Cab fan). Try and see if you can figure it out hehe.

Recs?

Just listened to Narrow Stairs all the way through and loved it. Outside of this album I know the singles Sound of Settling and Transatlanticism, what album should I listen to next?

Small bands inspired by DCFC?

I made this playlist with some really great suggestions from this group last year. Anyone has some suggestions?

Any explicit DCFC songs?

I know there's The Face That Launched 1000 Shits but I was curious if there was any others. (By explicit I mean like foul language I guess, not something like We Looked Like Giants)

Edit: Postal service and Ben's single artist stuff count too

New stuff / tour?

I just really need something to look forward to. Is there any rumors of an EP for 25? If not could go for a new tour for sure. Last couple weeks have been rough and winter has set in here.

What was the first DCFC album you listened to?

I’m curious if most people got their start by listening to either Transatlanticism or Plans or if there is a wider variety of the first album people heard. Any newer fans start with a later album like TYFT or Asphalt Meadows? Also curious what was the first album you were a fan of when it came out?

For me, my friend gave me a USB with Transatlanticism on it and I had heard “A Lack of Color” on my The OC Mix 2 record as my first DCFC song. That album blew my mind and I immediately had to get access to as many DCFC songs as possible. But the first album I was a fan for when it came out was Narrow Stairs (started listening in 2005 right after Plans had already been released). Also the first tour I got to see them play for, still my favorite album to this day.

Ben's title theme song for the show "Shrinking" is great.

Not a Death Cab song, but Frightening Fishes Ben (and Tom Howe) wrote for the show brings me joy each time I hear it and I'll never "skip intro".

"Pull me out of the drink before I start to drown

Let the wreckage all sink

To where the fishes are frightening

I wanna hear myself think again

I wanna hear myself think again"

The images for the opening credits work well too, it's like a whimsical music video. I borderline get choked up with its message and delivery...we all need a little clarity from time to time.

Hearing Ben/Death Cab on soundtracks for shows or in movies will probably always be exciting for me (shout out to their version of "Little Boxes" for Weeds). I'm looking forward to where I'll spot him/them next.

No Joy in Mudville

“If I could have had my way, this year would bridge ‘66 again”

I’m stuck trying to figure out what ‘66 being bridged is referring to but I read somewhere on a thread that it was a reference to lou reed. I also read that “brownstone up three flights of stairs” refers to lyrics from I’m waiting for the Man which also refers to a song lou reed wrote but I’m still struggling to find the connection.

Is there some event from 1966 whether in real life, lou reed’s life, or the poem/movie the song’s name is based off of that this might come from?

Or is Ben just naming ‘66 as a random year that he would like to nostalgically refer back to and I’m reading too hard into it?

Can anyone shed any light on what I’m not seeing here?

Hearing DCFC songs publicly

I live in The Netherlands. A few weeks ago on the first day of Ocotober, I heard a Soul Meets Body in a supermarkt. This was for me the for the first time ever to hear a DCFC publicly! I was just walking around in search for something and then it hit my ears. I just had to message my wife and she was happy for me of course LOL

Today I entered a waiting room for a national famous maze and I heard another song by DCFC again!

I started listening to the band around 2005 just after Plans had come out. The songs, lyrics and melodies truly helped me big time in my late teenage years. It is very special for me to hear these song in public.

Just wanted to share this with you <3

Death Cab/The Postal Service personal album ranking?

It pains me greatly to rank them because I love them all, but it mainly comes down to how much I listen to them. Interested to see where these land for you, the first five are pretty much tied in quality for me, codes & keys being close behind.

Transatlanticism

Asphalt Meadows

Give up

Narrow Stairs

Plans

Codes and Keys

We have the Facts

First Death Can demo tape

This is just a curiosity. I'm wondering if any of y'all have (or even know about) the very first Death Can demo tape that Ben recorded on his own, before he got the band together, while he was still a member of Pinwheel.

I went to college with Ben and Nick at WWU in Bellingham, WA. I became a huge fan of Ben's first band, Pinwheel, and went to see them play every chance I got. At one of these shows, Ben was handing out demo tapes for his new solo project, "Death Can For Cutie" (what a weird-ass name, LOL) and I was lucky enough to get one. The funniest thing about it was that the cassette had this odd-looking label that I'd never seen on a tape before. Ben explained "yeah, we had a bunch of these labels sitting around the lab at school (he was a Biochem major) and I realized that they would fit perfectly on a cassette tape, so I grabbed them".

This must have been in 1997, because that's the year I turned 21, and I remember this being a bar show (pretty sure it was the 3B Tavern). Of course the tape was amazing, and I played the crap out of it that year, at least until Ben recruited Chris & Nick (who, at this time, was playing in a band called Shed) & Nate and put out the proper release You Can Play These Songs With Chords (which, if I remember right, had all the songs from the demo plus a few more).

Unfortunately, I lost my copy of the demo many years ago, and have never seen another one or even talked to anyone who knew of its existence. So I'm just curious if anybody has one or even knows what the hell I'm talking about.
