What a fantastic short collection of melodies. Amma right? I got this in fall 2010 on iTunes, the first purchase I made as a preteen following binging Plans and Transatlanticism the following summer which was my entry to death cab. Been listening ever since. Absolutely adore talking bird demo. What a great EP!!! Just posting to show my love and restart discussion on this little guy
Also I just got a vinyl record player and this along with We have the facts and we’re voting yes I bought together which are now my first two death cab vinyls!
My dad and I have always bonded over music and Death Cab for Cutie is the first band we ever shared an interest in. I can’t imagine not dancing to them (or at least a Ben Gibbard song) for my dance with my dad. That said, I’ve been having a really hard time finding a song that isn’t too romantic or about a breakup. (For example, I love Marching Bands of Manhattan but I don’t think “sorrow drips into your heart through a pinhole” is a great wedding day refrain; I thought about Guiding Star but it’s very much about Jesus and my dad and I aren’t religious; etc.)
I’m open to anything Death Cab, Postal Service, or just Ben Gibbard in general at this point.
It doesn’t need to be explicitly father-daughter either. Just something that could stretch to fit.
Honestly, if I can’t find one I’m just going to be weird and do Grapevine Fires because that’s our favorite song but I figured I’d ask if anyone here has an idea first.
Thanks!
The Photo album is so great. I listened to it last night for the first time in quite a while and I forgot how much I enjoy it.
Saw this post on TikTok and honestly warms my heart. Never would I have thought I’d seen a Death Cab costume
Wondering what the dots mean? Is it braille? Also any significance of the running people? Thinking of getting the cover tattooed on my forearm
It's really hard to explain the way Plans makes me feel when I listen to it. I have heard it so many times over the years and I've never gotten tired of it. I mean it's Death Cab so that's pretty much impossible, right? I know some people think this is the album that they sold out on or whatever, but I don't care about that. I really don't. The songs that I love the most are your heart is an empty room, what Sarah said, and Brothers on a hotel bed. In What Sarah said when Ben just keeps repeating "who's gonna watch you die," and the way it just hits me is so haunting. I love the piano in the beginning of brothers on a hotel bed. I just love this album so much but everything dcfc does is amazing.
I remember it going something like "Ben Gibbard is my favorite of the over-pronunciating indie rock staaars" or something. It was really funny to me.
Can't find it anywhere anymore but I'd love to find it again, and also would like to let the person know that their "song" still lives in my head rent free lol
Based on “why you’d want to live here” we know the “belly of the beast” is an unfavorable view of LA. When he mentions it again in “stay young go dancing,” I’m guessing that’s a nod to a previous lyric, and a recognition/admission that something he previously hated was working out alright (at that time). Right? Seems unlikely he’d unknowingly use the same phrase.
this is becoming one of my favorite bands and i really wish there was more like them. but ive rarely heard an album like transatlanticism.
I decided to lean into the colors and really glad I did. Love the way it turned out.
I got to thank him for everything in person my life is complete 😭😭🙏🏻🙏🏻 he was so nice. stars show was amazing too!!
I’m going to my first solo Ben show next month and I am super excited. Not sure what to expect— for those who have gone before - does he play a mix of DCFC and solo tracks or add in covers ?
is my favorite Death Cab song, and this "demo" (I always consider it an album) is my favorite as well. "They stated the parting was ugly, it brought him to tears." Love that line.
Just wanted to see what the group felt because I feel like it isn't mentioned much here! I also deeply love Champagne from a paper cup.
Please let me know if I missed anything that needs to be included!
Listened to Transatlanticism for the first time during September last year, and it's quickly become my favorite album ever. I'm only 19, and curious what it was like to be a fan when this album first came out. Must have been a time.
Okay so I’m watching Alvin and the Chipmunks and it’s the scene where Dave plays his song for Ian. I’m laughing so hard because I think it’s a parody of “I will follow you into the dark” and I never noticed until now. this cannot be a coincidence! https://youtu.be/QLMS9YTKDp4?si=QLgbv0hu49Ou4vL1
Hey, does anyone remember the old (talking mid 2000s) forum on the Death Cab website? I have been trying to find any remnant of its existence but I can’t seem to find anything! I just wondered if any old posters are still on here. I was a member around 2007-08.
I don't know much of this band. I Will Follow You Into the Dark and Here to Forever are what I know. I even almost included Hey There, Delilah, I know them so little.
I love the chorus for Here to Forever, specifically that dumdadadumdadadumdadadumdum guitar, but the lead singer's voice is obviously the thing that makes the band stand out immediately when heard.
Towards the end of the set, Ben said something about tonight being the eve of the last postal service show. Did anyone else catch that?
