Hi all, I’m training for a marathon in the Peak District this autumn that involves a fair bit of technical terrain and steep climbs/descents etc. I’m definitely going to get up there for some recce runs before, but my training will almost all be here in Devon. Does anyone know of any routes that would be good training for that kind of terrain?

Someone posted about 10 tors here and it just reminded me of some of my favourite days. Waking up at 5 in the morning on the heath to the most beautiful sunrise and walking until dusk. Just how happy I was wondering through. I can feel it so vividly. Does anyone else feel this out on Dartmoor just pure nostalgia… 🙃🙃

A few snaps from two nights on the moors this weekend.. Weather was super changeable, got hit by 3 hailstorms on day one. I'm guessing its rained a lot lately because the marshes were very high and turned some footpaths into rivers. Rained from early evening on both nights so most of the evening was spent in the tent. Was lucky that each morning was relatively dry .

I’m trying to plan a weekend in North Dartmoor and I was wondering which website / service you are using to gauge the weather? Especially a week in advance but I appreciate it’s quite difficult so a few days could be good too. The nearest town I’m usually looking at is Belstone, but I don’t know how representative it is. This spring my family want to do a barbeque in a car park in dartmoor, possibly the 4 seasons one. I've told my mum that I'm pretty sure it's not allowed, but she said that it only applies to the open moorland, not any parking areas.

She said would be done with a proper stove, not a disposable one and that it's fine.

Tbh I'm pretty mortified coz I don't want to look like we're abusing the area and don't want any of us to get in trouble.

I've tried to find some clear rules with parking areas in particular and I can't find anything. Please could someone help?

Looking to wild swim lots more in Dartmoor, wondering how clean the water is, and if I should avoid swimming after heavy rainfall?

There is just so much going here, from a mysterious story about a medieval vicar murdered with all the parish keeping their lips sealed to a wonderful medieval rood screen with saint and pageant paintings, including a very rare depiction of a beardless Christ, roof bosses of the same age, stained glass and a sparse and beautiful interior.

Plus more, as ever…

Then there is the outside, a fine structure with a view eastwards that goes on for miles and miles.

Hi! So at my school I'm participating in Ten Tors 2024 and I was wondering if anyone could offer some advice. As said in the title, I'm doing 35 miles. I'm quite an avid walker, and I love anything to do with nature! I've already done 3 training sessions (2 fully completed, 1 drop out on the 2nd day due to a leg injury). I've completed DofE Bronze, and I'm working on Silver, but I know that they don't compare to ten tors.

One of my biggest challenges I've faced so far is stamina. For example, last weekend, I had a training and my group walked 22 km on the first day. It was a 8am start and we ended at roughly 6pm. I'm fine with flat land, boggy areas and stuff like that. However, from the tors we have climbed I ended up taking regular breaks, which put my team a bit behind on our route card. For example, two weeks ago we had a training, with the really harsh winds from the storm, and we walked up Steeperton Tor, and it was horrible and I needed many breaks.

I would appreciate any tips and advice and anything like that! Thank you in advance!

We walked on Meldon a few months ago and really enjoyed our first Dartmoor trip. Due to stay near Sourton soon and wondering if anyone has particularly enjoyed a walk around that area? Don't mind going to Sourthley/Shortacombe/Downton way. Somewhere with easy parking nearby, comfortable with most terrain, looking for up to 2 hours walking with some varied scenery along the way. I saw on here someone posted the Brentor Church which looks worth a visit?

Always nice to hear personal recommendations and tips from people who have walked there before, especially as we're Dartmoor newbies! Thank you in advance.

hello! 2 things questions i’m wondering about here:

1. does anyone know what this orange highlight on dartmoor is? i’ve been trying to figure it out. at first i thought it was where you could camp but no it’s not.

2. is there a way to turn on a highlight for where you can wild camp? when planning an exped it’s a faff trying to switch to google and back to os maps for the wild camping areas.
