The water dish is a little debatable but otherwise… Not good for displaying animals for sale but it looks homey for them XD
I've got 4 juvenile (going into? 9 months ish old) Tincs. I suspect they will start showing signs of aggression at some point. I've seen videos of obvious sparring like below. Once I see anything I have a seperate place for him/her to live. So far, some times one jumps in front of the other and I think is that a passive aggressive jump or just fumblin' around for food. No real weight loss or actual fighting to note of except one seems a bit more aloof than the other 3 but he's still eating. One is really bold and just chills near the entrance when he hears me walk in the room. I've had P. bicolor and D. auratus for 2 years and theres been no aggression ever so I'm not sure what i'm looking at.

What are the other perhaps more subtle signs to look out for?
Is it more males or females that are going to fight?
Is any aggression bad or is there a limit like 1 fight = ok or time to seperate immediately?
Do you seperate the sub-dominant one and leave the dominant one?
Any videos would be really helpful.
They're unimaginably small and surprisingly fast. I love them! I've seen so many videos of dart frogs eating but seeing mine do it, in person, brings me so much joy. I'm sure they enjoy being shipped but they hid in the leaves for under an hour before coming out chow down on fruit flies and explore the viv.
Thanks for all the feedback on their vivarium when I posted it a few weeks ago! After that I purchased a 24"x18"x24" which I'm currently setting up, and they're living in the 10 gallon for now while they're growing (they are just babies!)
Hey all, I’ve had my 4 tincs for a while now and I notice whenever I spray their cage out with the hand pump spray bottle the water droplets are usually quite large, large enough to see. It’s not really a ‘mist’. Does this matter?
I’m asking because I’ve heard things like ‘the water should be in the air not on the soil and leaves’ etc. and my soil does usually get flooded, but I use my tank’s drainage to help with that. (Although that washes the soul’s nutrients away if I do it a lot)…
If I spent hundreds on an automatic misting system would it produce a finer spray, more like ‘mist’ and would this make the cage more humid and less wet.?
Thanks!
I’ve been working on a vivarium over the past few months, and just got a pair of Azures last weekend. I was hoping that the waste produced by the frogs and springtails in the vivarium would be sufficient to feed the plants, but they seem to be showing signs of a nutrient deficiency.
Having many aquariums in the past, my first thought was to add something like seachem flourish to the water, as the vivarium has a drip-wall type feature that keeps the plants moist. However, I know darts are sensitive to chemicals as they take up water through their skin. Do you guys have any advice for/against using something like flourish in the tank?
so i am approaching the 2 year mark of having my dendrobates auratus, i understand it is suggested to replace the substrate around the 2 year mark. i built my viv with no background, because i know auratus are more of horizontal frogs than vertical, but if i'm changing the substrate i would like to go back in and do a background. as far as temporary housing for my frogs in the meantime, would I need a significant amount of time to ensure the pretty much entirely rebuilt vivarium with a background, new substrate, some new plants (that i would acclimate before-hand), and all that to all settle in? or am i okay just with a few days with them in temporary housing and a new viv once all said and done. appreciate any replies !
This is my already established bioactive 12x12x18 tank where I had my whites tree frog who recently passed (RIP), he was blind and did much better in a smaller tank than a larger one, hence the 12x12x18. Now that he has passed, I'm looking into thumbnail dart frogs. I know they'd prefer a 18x18x18 which I'd be open to doing in the future, but I'd like to start out with the one I already have. I'd appreciate any thoughts on which thumbnails would be best (vents or imitators) also any thoughts on how this current set up could be changed to suit them better? It's obviously a little overgrown and needs some TLC. I'm already planning on adding some bromeliads, but any other ideas are welcome
I'm just a proud momma. carry on ladies and gentlemen.
Well unfortunately I lost my first D. auratus froglet which only emerged 4-5 days ago. He must've escaped out of my rearing tub, squeezed his way out and disappeared. I searched through all the leaf litter and i'm pretty sure he's gone.
So I need a new set up for my rearing of the upcoming tadpoles - got 5-6 with legs soon to emerge out.
Show me some of your containers for the wee ones.
Update. The little dude was in there the whole time mind = blown. I put in a tiny 1 oz (50ml) deli cup and a stick in there size of a pencil. There he was just chilling in the water. He is alive and well.
*edit again hope I conveyed this properly, he is not IN a tiny cup, there is a tiny cup of water in the tub he is in.
I’m planning to build my first setup for Tinctorious Azureus sometime next year, and I want to do tons of research. However, I have no clue where to start. I was hoping to get article suggestions or YT series you guys like.
I wanted to run a stable ecosystem for a few months first before I grab the frog, just so I don’t get overwhelmed by the whole thing. I thought that was worth mentioning.
Bonus points if its tailored to the frog I mentioned!
Hi all,
I have a new Vivarium that's been up for about 2 months now. I'm looking to get into the dart frog hobby and torn between tincs and Auratus. Do y'all think it's ready for frogs?
I've had a zoomed waterfall in my terrarium for a while now and not had any issues but today it was low on water which I thought was weird cause I filled it last night. I added more water and went about my day, checked back in on it and noticed the substrate was pretty wet and the waterfall was low on water again. Being dumb and hopeful I filled it again, took the glass cover off the top of the terrarium and hoped it would sort itself out.
When I came back to check on it again the tank was flooded. I took the waterfall out and there was literally like 3 inches of standing water in the hole it was in. I had to use a kitchen sponge to remove as much water as I could and for the life of me I cannot figure out what caused this.
Hi!
I’ve been reading up on dart frogs and started this 36x18x24 build for a pair of azureus tincs which will be my first frogs. As of right now, I have a bunch of leaf litter to put in which I’ve been waiting to do until I feel like I’m done adding/adjusting. I’m wondering if this looks okay or if there are any problems or ideas of how to make it better.
Thanks :)
Can anybody attest to NC dartfrogs and their reliability of health for their dartfrog juveniles, I am looking to get some green sips and have had trouble finding a place to buy some that either has them or responded to messages regarding stock, these will be my first darts ever
Don't have any dendrobatidae at the moment (that will hopefully change at some point soon lol), just these 3 little fellows, Golden Mantellas, I'm just starting to get into keeping mini frogs and this is my first setup for them, love em already though they might be my favourite amphibians. (I need to snip some plants I'm aware of that), but enjoy pics :)
