I am a weenie but I really enjoyed the quarry: which dark pictures game is the least disturbing?

I understand they’re all horror games but are there any that are particularly scary/disturbing that i should maybe avoid or some that are milder than the others? Sorry for being a weenie.

Question about Man of Medan Collectibles

Just curious, do I have to unlock all secrets and pictures in a SINGLE play through or if I find some like I did first time I can just focus on the ones that are still locked? Like do you need to consistently unlock all of them or can u unlock any at any play through and it only matters having them all in the main menu in general?

And I do wonder if that goes for the other games as well

Curators Cut MoM detail

I went back after some time to play the curators cut of season one. I couldn't bring myself to do it again after the first playthrough, anyway. A neat and cute little detail I noticed having a sibling, is when Julia calls out to Conrad she calls him Connie. In the same scene talking to Alex she refers to him as Conrad to him.

Insignificant, but really cool, little, detail I never noticed my first playthrough. I love those kind of miniscule details developers put into their work. Most people overlook it, but that's a good thing, because it comes off so genuine no one notices. Just wanted to share and see if anyone else had noticed that as well?

I made flowcharts for Murder Mill and The Massacre at Gerant Manor.

i personally am not a super big fan of TCOFS' flowchart system, so i decided to make a more detailed one.

NOTE: If the link is telling you that you aren't allowed access, make a draw.io account, as I have already permitted minimum access to anyone who has the link.

Obviously, there are spoilers. so if you haven't yet played TCOFS, don't look at these.

Murder Mill

The Massacre at Gerant Manor

KEY:

Large Rectangle = Beginning, End, Scene Transition

Small Rectangle = Action, Event

Small Red Rectangle = Character Death

Oval = Choice

Circle = A choice made in an earlier chapter is affecting the story.

Red Line = A choice made earlier within the same chapter is affecting the story.

(The large squares are notes left by me.)

Please let me know if there is anything inaccurate or missing!

Recently finished S1! Here’s my ranking!

First and foremost I just wanna say I did have a good time with all of these games, and I’m definitely gonna keep following the series! I wouldn’t call any of them masterpieces, but this is a super fun and smart franchise that I hope grows to be as well known and recognized as Until Dawn/The Quarry.

4: Little Hope - I’ve always been fascinated by the Salem witch trials, so this game hooked me right away. The acting is also some of the best in the series! But two big things draw me away from this game. Firstly, the locked traits mechanic is horrible. The game never explains what it is or how it works, and even if it did it the punishment for keeping the trait locked is far too steep. So when you thought you were about to save everyone, boom everyone is dead and you have no idea where you went wrong. Secondly, it kinda has the same twist as its predecessor, Man of Medan. While it does a much better job of giving the twist actual significance and depth, I couldn’t help but feel like they could’ve done something more creative than “It was all hallucinations” again.

3: Man of Medan - Being the first game in the series, I had no idea what to expect. Was this just gonna be Until Dawn in a new font or mix it up a bit? While the answer to that question may be the former, it doesn’t take away from the experience one bit. This game has maybe my favorite theming in the season, touching on the cruelty of war and such. My only gripe with this game is that it can get kinda boring exploring on the ship. All the reused camera angles in the halls and corridors and the fact that the ship almost feels too barren for even an abandoned WWII ship. Other than that, and maybe the fact that you can save Conrad so quickly and easily, this is a fun game!

2: House of Ashes - I’m not crazy about action war hero movies or anything like that, but stir in some creature feature horror? Now you’ve got my attention. These are two genres that I have never seen meet before and it works surprisingly well. The vampires are also some of the most terrifying monsters Supermassive have ever made. Plus, unlike MoM, exploring the areas in this game is fucking awesome! The detail of the sets in HoA is so impressive. I would’ve personally made the shooting sections, especially early on in the game, something other than just a bunch of QTE’s. Probably something close to Telltale’s TWD S1’s shooting sections. I also am not over the moon about the love triangle, it makes sense, but feels like it could’ve either been done better or they could’ve done something different with the three of them to cause tension. Maybe a replay would help me like it a bit better.

1: The Devil In Me - Fuck…yes… This game smacks. The premise and inspiration is so damn refreshing for Supermassive games. No hallucinations, no supernatural shit, no creatures, just you and a psychotic killer. These games truly do shine when they put an interesting twist on true stories and events from history. While the acting is a bit lesser than most in the series, Jessie Buckley’s performance absolutely carries. The new traversal elements are also a nice touch and we FINALLY get a run feature, thank god. Exploring the castle is the most fun exploration has ever been in one of these games including UD and TQ. Yes this game puts you in a couple unfair situations, yes the characters you are with can get in the way, yes the backstory for Du’Met/Munday is kinda out there. But I also just described like, most of SM’s horror games. If this game is a sign of what’s to come for S2, then we’re in for a treat.

Finished TDIM. Meh. (Spoilers)

So far, my least favorite game of this genre. There was a lot of wasted mechanics and a lot of unrealistic scenerio reaction moments that took me out of the game.

Some of the tone wasting was all the shimmying. The shed was a compete was of my time and they make you shimmy to get there. Also, at the lighthouse, in that scenario, I believe an individual would just bust out a 100 year old set of windows to reach the control panel for the lights. Just little things like this annoy me.

And, the killer kind of sucks at, um killing. There are several moments where he doesn’t impact the story in a way I feel like a murderer would. I understand that in his psyche he wants the victims to die in particular ways, so I’ll excuse the Erin and inhaler but the rest of them, he would have just killed them. Example being (depending how you play) how he stops Kate from falling off the roof. That just wouldn’t happen as the murderer had already lost control of the situation.

And somehow Mark randomly knew the dogs name? Maybe I missed something in my play through. Also, the truck driver at the end was driving a clutch and didn’t brake in a way that made sense (yes I know, this point is very picky).

Also the scene with the dog and the killer hitting the tomatoes was just dumb. And also, the option to kill the dog? The killer clearly would hear the dog barking already and the dog would welp etc and be louder if you killed it. That entire scene really took the suspense away from me as it just didn’t seem relatable at all.

I think there are just a lot of “ya right” moments in the story and a lot of wasted time doing tasks for no reason in this title.

I have more points, but I am tired of typing already.

What factors do you feel make a game a "Choose Your Own Adventure Games" as opposed to just a game where the player can make choices?

I'm trying to compile a list of as many Choose Your Own Adventure game that I can think of. Here's what I have so far

  • Until Dawn
  • The Quarry
  • All 4 Dark Anthology games (Man of Medan, Little Hope, House of Ashes, Devil in Me)
  • All Life is Strange games (1, 2, Before the Storm, True Colors)
  • Beyond 2 Souls
  • Heavy Rain
  • Detroit Become Human
  • Fahrenheit: Indigo Prophecy
  • Slay the Princess
  • The Casting of Frank Stone

What other games do you feel fall under the umbrella of Choose Your Own Adventure? Because obviously many games let you make choices that change how the game is played but nobody calls them Choose Your Own Adventure games.

Two weeks off to binge play, skip Man of Medan?

I just bought all the games + The Quarry (except Until Dawn because I play on PC) to binge play during two weeks off work. I was thoroughly bored watching a playthrough of Man of Medan when it was first released and it seems to be the least positively reviewed of the bunch.

I'm playing solo, so should I just skip it? Will I be missing an overarching narrative?

Even though I've seen bits and pieces of playthroughs for all the games, I haven't watched them religiously to the end, except Until Dawn and The Quarry because I adored them so much!

Edit: I played it. Was ok, but very short, jumpscare heavy and a bit tedious. The claustrophobic setting (not in a scary way) coupled with the unresponsive player movement and camera were irritating. But I liked the characters, even though they begun to lose their individuality by the end. Perhaps repeat playthroughs will help with that, but it'll be a while before I replay this one.

Which game did it the best for Shared Story?

Personally I think House of Ashes did it the best, as it is the only game so far that allow both players to only play as two specific characters with one that is split to both. There is a lot of separation from other player, but still able to do it right when the characters come together. One thing to mention is that one player gets to play as a husband and the other as a wife, one plays a character that is in the opposite team of the other player. They did it very well.

Man of Medan did good on the online shared experience. Little Hope did okay. But The Devil in Me though did not do it the well. There was some weird character switching when both players get to the next scene.

Long rant incoming

Ex: Player one play as Mark to scout for shot while player two play as Charlie to find cigarettes, after both players got past the scene, the next scene have player one switch to Charlie and player two play as Kate who was with Mark. (I know they did this with their previous game. Having player one as character B which player two was recently character B. While player two gets character A which player one was recently character A.) But I mean like in the Dinner scene, there is choice for player one where Charlie talks about how he couldn’t get his cigarette because the machine was broken, and player two choice as Kate say “He definitely heard us” or “No way he heard us” even though player two WAS recently as Charlie eavesdropping their conversation, and player one has no idea what machine he’s talking about because player one wasn’t the one looking for cigarettes. Another Ex: Player one is Charlie (after escaping the incinerator). Player two is Kate. If player one is able to get Charlie alive out the grinder, later player two play as Charlie seeing that he is SUDDENLY alive coming out of the basement. Not only that, but some premonition are meant for other player to see. One example is player two as Kate find a picture that shows Jamie getting attacked and dragged by Dumet, which player one was MEANT to see it, because they will be the one playing as her later on and player two will not be there. I could give more related examples but I don’t wanna type any further.

Anyway, what are your thoughts?

Does Devil in Me get better?

Sorry, I love these type of games and have played most of them, but this thing just isn’t doing it for me. I’m only about an hour in and I’m just bored with all of this walking around and climbing and crawling nonsense. Please tell me it gets better.

I loved House of Ashes and downloaded the DP games but this one is losing me quick.

And Until Dawn and the Quarry were amazing too.

I'm so obsessed with this scene in Devil in Me that Kate's screams seem so real, it's like she really is begging to live.

Questions regarding the Locked Traits mechanic from Little Hope

Genuinely had no idea this was a thing until recently, despite playing the games twice. According to the DPA wiki, a character dies in the end if they “failed to break her locked traits”. The wiki page about Locked Traits mentions that each character has 5 to 8 points where they can get a locked trait, but only 1 moment in which these traits can be broken.

What I want to know:
- If you make the right decision to break the traits, can you still lock traits afterwards and get killed anyway because of them?
- Does the character die if you only have 1 locked trait, regardless of which trait it is, or is there a minimal number of locked traits a character must have in order to trigger their death? (Meaning you could theoretically get away with 2 locked traits, but 3 means death.)

Because from what I've read, the only thing that seems to really matter is that 1 moment where they can break their locked traits. Any other decision they make regarding their traits becomes irrelevant(?). I swear I made multiple of these ‘bad choices' during my playthrough, but “broke the locked traits” and everyone got saved anyway. It’s really confusing.

Doors

Just started playing House of Ashes, finished Devil in Me and I’m noticing a weird trend. All the time the characters are always struggling to open doors. I get the settings I just think it’s a bit weird. Haven’t played Little Hope and I played Man of Medan a while ago. Not quite sure about those.

Tempted to play through a DPA title... but don't know which one to commit to.

Hey everyone, just wondering what your suggestions would be for a first full DPA playthrough. I usually hate horror, but I like the movie-ness of these games... I started to play a little bit of Little hope last week, but not sure which I want to actually play.

If the game have premonition

I’d imagine all those trinkets would show a vision of future possibilities, instead of just being a collectibles. So I decided to do it myself. Although some trinket’s name and meaning doesn’t match or relate to what’s shown in the vision, but it’s the best I could do.

How it works is, when you interact with a trinket you found, you must turn the trinket to find a glowing light in it and it will zoom in and show you the premonition (just like how Until Dawn Remake work). This was really fun to make. Took a quite a lot of my time to do it, but it was worth it!

A different interpretation

Am I the only one who didn’t think the Curator was resurrecting Du’Met with the page of names??

At the start of the game it set up this H. H. Holmes legend/myth of him having the Devil in him (game title) and that death could not stop him from killing again, right? So, I thought the list was just the games way of confirming that Du’Met, Munday, and Holmes are all aliases of the same entity that can’t be permanently killed, and that’s why the names above where all crossed off. If anything, I thought him tearing out the page was him trying to break the cycle and stop the killer from being able to come back. He seems more inclined to help us than hurt us—offering hints when he’s not supposed to—so the idea of him bringing him back just doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.

Idk, just wanted to share my thoughts on it.

[You all can downvote me all you want but I have a valid point. Not a single person has been able to explain why he would resurrect Du’Met when he’s previously tried to help us.]

House Of Ashes: Most Tragic (Or hilarious) route, Nick Edition! (Spoilers, obviously)

Hello everyone! Now this has been one of the games I'm most excited to do a tragic route on; House Of Ashes! Now, as most may be aware, this doesn't just mean an everyone dead playthrough- if there's a more interesting outcome, there will be! Without further ado, let's go!

-In the beginning, have Balathu kill the tied girl without hesitation. Along the same lines, ensure Balathu and Khirum have a terrible relationship.

-Just as Khirum and Balathu discuss being allies, put that sword through Khirum and dip outta there. Balathu gets his karma regardless, and becomes The Ancient One!

-As Rachel, continue the relationship with Nick. Poor Eric (Genuinely, oof), but this isn't for shipping war reasons. You'll see!

-Have Eric be such an absolute ass to everyone. Jason will despise him after first meeting, and Eric shows quite an asshole side towards Rachel. Also, his Overbearing trait can increase like 5 times before the vampires even appear.

-Allow WP, no air support. Why not do barely-legal war crimes? And who needs aerial backup, anyway

-Throughout the game, fail every QTE as Jason, Nick, and Salim. They get shot and hurt so much, it's a miracle they survive as long as they do. It's hilarious to see Jason and Nick with like 4-5 bullet wounds and scratches, and moving like pure tanks.

-As Jason, hit the shepherd, and shoot every shepherd you can. Literal lives lost for no reason, good for the tragic route! And Salim gives Jason a few bullets as a thank you.

-Have Nick suffocate Merwin. This is literal murder on a fellow soldier, even if accidental. I can't imagine that'll go over easy. Either way, Nick will have that on his mind.

-Absolutely destroy Eric and Rachel's relationship. In this route, Eric is an absolute asshole, and Rachel is an absolute Queen Bitch for sure. Match made in Hell!

-Have Eric get shot in the arm by Dar while holding onto Rachel (but do the next QTE, as Eric can't exactly tank a heart shot)

-...And then have Eric immediately cut Rachel's rope! She'll forgive him, I'm sure. He had a shot arm, to be fair!

-Leave the medkit. Who needs medical care, when you can keep on going with 5 bullets in you?

-Have Eric find out about Nick and Rachel, which means supporting Nick smoking as Jason, so Eric connects the clues! This'll also result in Eric punching Nick!

-Rachel will be a surprisingly good person in this route, despite having terrible traits! While she'll be fearful, and be the least reassuring person ever to Clarice, she'll bring Clarice with her. She'll also be saving Eric. While these are good route options, this gets Salim injured by saving Rachel, and Rachel infected by saving Eric.

-Have Jason tell Nick to rely on himself. It's pretty much a "You're on your own, buddy", and helps with something later..

-When Dar is shooting at Jason and Nick, fail almost every QTE (except the last one to shoot at Dar, to save Eric). This results in Jason making a run for it, Nick not providing his cover fire, and Jason going "Where the HELL was my cover, soldier?!" after getting lit up by Dar, barely making it behind the barrier

-Have Jason shoot Clarice, after fighting off Rachel and Eric! He murders someone against the will of like three people (I forgot how Nick felt about it). Alternatively, have Clarice survive the ordeal, for the next thing:

-Have Nick blow up Rachel and Eric (and possibly Clarice)! This...is self explanatory. He just blew up the Colonel and Rachel. The woman he loved. I'm sure the military will be able to recognize the difference between bombs and vampires, so Nick is certainly getting fired for this blunder.

-This goes without explanation, but Jason and Salim absolutely despise eachother. Well, have them get close enough for Salim to tell Jason about his son. This ensures Jason knows Salim has a kid, which will make this even worse

-Have Jason inhale the dust from the statue. Rest in peace...

-Later on, advance further into the hive. This allows for Jason and Salim to try to come rescue Nick (but they absolutely fail due to their many injuries.) Nick saves himself due to Jason's speech earlier.

-Have Jason abandon Salim, when presented the chance, as well as rise with the elevator. Salim, after succeeding many QTE's with hope, arrives just to see the elevator going without him, which has lots of dark humor potential.

-This leaves Jason and Nick, who depending on your choices, have a much lower bond than how they started. They are both very scratched and shot up, and they've both murdered/abandoned quite a few people. They'll also survive the end!~

Jason and Nick, together, have survived the traumatic onslaught of vampires. However, Nick suffocated Merwin, blew up Eric and Rachel and possibly Clarice, witnessed Salim be abandoned, and grew distanced from Jason. Jason shot innocents, possibly shot Clarice, and abandoned a man who had a son. Both are also carrying on with deep claw scratches, physical trauma, and many bullet wounds! This isn't even to mention the fact that Nick is already traumatized by shooting an innocent woman before the events of the game. Also, they used unauthorized WP.

Is this the first duo ending?! Well, no...Jason inhaled vampire dust. He may suffer a long death, possibly under experimentation of the military, and may turn into a vampire (?). Nick may not even live, he's not a high rank like Eric or Rachel, and he blew them up, on top of everything else. The military has lots of incentive to kill him. If he does, he may be more traumatized than Andrew from Little Hope, or worst route Mike/Conrad.

Is this the most tragic outcome? This has to be one of the most vicious bad routes. Honorable mentions go to a sole survivor cocooned Rachel (Being trapped for possibly thousands of years, likely aware, nobody knowing about you, is an unbearably torturous fate to think about. Imagine Balathu/Khirum's fate but worse.) Salim makes it home, he straight up leaves Rachel there without a doubt. I will also do an Eric Edition soon, since he is also a viable 'protagonist' for this route! If there's anymore you'd like to see from me, let me know in the comments! If I made any mistake, let me know, I haven't played the game recently so I may have some inconsistencies, but I have done a worst route before!
