Was hoping to apply for the remote BSW program at Dal for next year, but I’d hate to go back to part time. To anyone in the program this year, are the classes asynchronous or live?
While I understand the intent MAY be to keep costs down so that tutoring is accessible to students, it does not mean that the burden of that should be borne by the students themselves. Students who funnel 10s of thousands of dollars to your institution.
Living wage has gone up from 24 to 28$/hr in the past two years. A TA would be making close to 30$ an hour for the same work (e.g. chemistry concept room TAs)
Every year I become more disillusioned by this university. Thought I might come back to do my masters here but I don’t want to give this institution any more money than I can.
Does anyone know of any fun events happening on Halloween night? Either on campus or off campus would be fine!
Is Dal horribly laid out like a disjointed jigsaw puzzle put together upside down by someone with zero spatial awareness? Yes. Yes it is.
Let us look at a solution for the absolute lack of any kind of parking. Areas in the included images are existing parking lots that were seemingly slapped onto the side of a hill... when if the planner had a single ounce of foresight, could have been dug out and turned into a 2 or 3 story parking structure. Even the two fields could have parking underneath with the field on top.
Would this help immensely with the plan for doubling current enrollment? ABSOLUTELY! Will it ever be done? LMFAO! Not a chance.
How did everyone do?
How many are actually getting any jobs?
Also, if you did get one, are you international or a citizen?
Hey everyone! That’s all, I’m just wondering why it’s so prevalent. I’ve been in poli sci for years (it’s my 5th and final year), I never noticed a thing about this before.
Then this semester rolled around, standard getting back into the swing of things after the summer break, but with a very new addition to my life this final year. I had come out as transgender and started hormones right after I finished the previous winter exams. This was a big change but I was happy and confident this would elevate my school experience, as I’m no longer walking around campus with crippling dysphoria and a fake smile.
However, I would quickly come to find out many of my peers (especially cis women) would come to treat me not so great. Debates in class now sometimes include sly remarks about my experiences and identity. I would find myself being invalidated for the points I make on the bases of me being a trans women. Worst of all, I feel daggers ever time any topic of politics surrounding patriarchy come up. At first I would give my perspective on these things, talk about my opinions of women’s liberation, the experiences with misogyny I’ve had as a trans-women, and try to give insight on what upholds patriarchy and sexism. I found (unlike before I transitioned) I am quickly dismissed and thrown out of these conversations, as if my opinions don’t matter, or worse, I have no right to speak on them. (In fact I’ve been met with the “you have no right to speak on this” quite recently).
Now disagreement on these topics is fair, and in the past that’s what it would be chocked up as is: “I disagree with your points and here’s why”. But the manner has changed from disagreement and debate, to targeted degradation and invalidation. It makes me not really want to talk in class anymore. I’m just so fed up with it all.
Every class is so boring and barely related to the title!!! Oh my god!!! Absolutely awful!!!! Literally all the students are playing games on their laptops and everything and honestly I don’t blame them!! They’re horrible classes!! Everything is so bad!!
The amount of times I think about walking out is outstanding!!! I’m literally walking out right now!! They’re so boring, I would rather spend my day sitting in a room with nothing to keep me company or to do. That would be more fun than these classes and Dal life.
Hi MSW-ers
Wanted to see the work profile/experience pre-MSW studies for those of you who entered the through the non-bsw pathway,
On other MSW applications, i see social work related and human services jobs, but I am still not sure what constitutes social work related especially since you cant really work as a social worker without the bsw nor msw.
Thanks!
Seriously. How hard is it to flush a toilet? There have been times I've gone into the washroom (5th floor Risley) and 3 stalls either have piss, shit, or both in the toilet. Most of the time there's no toilet paper to be seen which is pretty damn gross. This is just inconsiderate. Most of you guys are ADULTS, full grown people, or close to it. Were you not potty trained? Seriously? On top of that, I've walked into stalls with piss COVERING the toilet seats. Absolutely disgusting. I don't care if you were drunk or partying the night before, I've seen gas station bathrooms less disgusting than this.
And while I'm here, if you're coming back from a party after 10pm and decide to scream-laugh in the hallways or hang out loudly in the washroom, fuck you. Some of us actually like to sleep.
Hey guys,
For the people who have TA’d or was a marker. How did you guys apply? Any tips on how to get the position if you do not have any experience? Any help would be appreciated thanks.
hey, so my friend recently had a exam missed due to illness and had a doctors note. The syllabus said they do not do make ups but give a doctors note to avoid a 0. The prof moved the 25% weight to her final making it 50%. However, his syllabus doesnt mention that is the result of a missed exam anywhere. He doesn't say what not getting a 0 entails. So i was just asking on her behalf ig what are the rules around that? Also if she has a case for an appeal.
thanks!
Hi, I'm currently in my first year in a double degree program at UOttawa for mechanical engineering and computing technology, and I moved here from Nova Scotia. So far, student life has not been great. The only thing the students here do for fun here is go across the river to Gat, where we can go to overpriced clubs. There are very few if any parties on campus, and the upper Canadians here tend to be fairly unfriendly and not as fun as Atlantic Canadians. I do also miss home quite a bit and can only go home on reading weeks at a great cost.
I am worried though Dal won't give me as good of opportunities as UO. Halifax is far away from the opportunities in Ontario, and I'll be moving into a single degree program rather than a double.
Are these concerns crazy? Will Dal give me good opportunities?
First year female living in residence next year. Opinions and thoughts on the best place to live? Looking for a good mix of social and studying.

Does anyone else find that the reading week for fall semester is way too late? Like we come back from reading week and finals are in 2 weeks. Reading week in the winter semester is way earlier on, about halfway through the semester. At the point it comes around during the fall semester, students are already burnt out. Just wondering if anyone felt the same way.
hey guys. i currently dont go to dal but im researching the Sociology and Social Anthropology (MA) program. looking for honest opinions, would u recommend it? if ur in soc at dal do you wish you would have went elsewhere or do you love it?
I just submitted my application to graduate for this coming spring (this is your reminder to get those in before December 1st to avoid paying an extra $50) and in doing so you have to specify how many tickets you need for guests. There are two per person guaranteed and then you can put in for an additional two and maybe get them but is that all you get? I have three people in my immediate family and two other family members with tickets already booked to fly out for the ceremony, do I have to choose who can’t come? Is there a way that I can buy a ticket from another student who doesn’t need them? I’m just really confused and anxious about this.
I’m taking five classes, I’m double majoring so they are pretty much all core courses. I’ve done six out of eight midterm so far and I still have two more to go. I’m getting really tired.
I'm so done and need a break
I've been confused on that front for a while, just hoping for some clarification.
The DSU should function as a self-sustaining business without taking funds from students—about $80 each term.
A quarter of a million dollars is spent solely on executive salaries, (Almost 20% of the Budget) 🤑🤑 while the rest is just the bare minimum to keep up an image of doing something for the students.
They have access to the most prime real estate in all of Halifax, yet they struggle to turn a profit and rely on student fees.
It’s such a shame. A terrible governance structure with rampant corruption. A better organization is needed. 😞
Hey, I'm a 3rd year student. I commute about an hour by bus to Halifax. I've been to the Grawood for drinks but I'd like to go out to some of the other bars in Halifax. But I don't want to have to take the bus home, have supper then get on another bus back. What do other students who commute do when they want to go out to bars?
I applied to dal on Oct 15 when early admissions opened up. I graduated highschool in June of 2024 and this is my first year of uni but I was always planning on staying home for my first year then transferring to dal. Anyways I’m a sociology major at my university and when I applied to dal I knew I had to use my highschool grades then if I’m accepted I apply to transfer over credits. However on the application portal it says they won’t give me a response until I send over my university transcript, but it’s my first semester I have nothing on my transcript until January. I emailed admissions last Friday but haven’t gotten an answer.
Seems like many people who applied on Oct 15 have heard back but I haven’t. I know I have lots of time but if they won’t look at my application until atleast January, it was pointless to do early admission. My first year estimated gpa is a 3.6. Has anyone else who’s transferred to dal had this problem and is there anyway to fix it like at all?
What a damn joke. What used to be free and instant now costs 10$ and takes 1-2 business days. Greedy fucks.
I know that my high school sent a copy to Dal but I was never given a copy of it, and I need it now. Can I find that somewhere on the website, or do I have to contact somebody for it?
Hey everyone,
I'm applying to grad school right now and some schools only require unofficial transcripts for the first round, but they say they need to have an attached transcript key and grading scale. Our academic records in Dal online have a link to a transcript key included at the top, but when you click it, it just takes you to the homepage of the dal website... I also haven't been able to find a hardcopy of our grading scale, just the webpage linked here. Does anyone know if Dal provides a formal marked pdf grading scale and transcript key? Thanks!!
