Yes, a proper pillow should be part of your budget. No, the $50 pillow from Amazon is not comparable. A good dakimakura pillow needs a lot of filling to be soft and plump and make your cover look the nicest!
I recently commissioned Mei/Cuddly Octopus for a new cover of Adachi and Shimamura, and they’re seriously too cute I love them so much! Perfect to celebrate the release of volume 12 and SS2 earlier this month 🎉🎉
Adashima is my favorite series ever so I can’t wait for these covers to arrive 🙏
Here’s a link to the Cuddly Octopus page if you want to check the cover out!

I finished this commission a few weeks ago for a very loyal client, she has become a very nice friend. I wanted to show you because I think the progress I have made with the coloring technique on clothes and folds is great and here you can see it very well.
I haven't seen any dedicated reviews for the Kumoame, so I though I would make a post to share my thoughts and experience with it and the company that sells it. Hopefully this can help people looking into purchasing one in the future. During this review I will be comparing the Kumoame to a cheap Chinese bootleg and a "premium" CMD9900LS. Everything related to shipping will be form an Aussie standpoint.
Kumoame Details ($224.35 AUD):
- 160cm length
- 6.5kg +/- 3% variance
- 2wt stretch fabric casing
- Kuumoame polyfill blend
TLDR:
A pricey dakimakura, but personally worth it if you have the money.
Pros:
- Good customer service
- Daki feels high quality
- No clumping at the 2-3 month mark
- Excellent squish for hugs and cuddles
- Great if you want a heavy pillow
Cons:
- Pricey (for those on a tight budget)
- Cheapest shipping can take up to over a month to deliver
- Takes a while to poof up completely for impatient people
- Not the choice for those wanting a lighter pillow
Purchasing Experience
Nice website that is easy to navigate on PC, containing a light and dark mode, and various currencies and languages to display. Kumoame product page outlines the size, weight, materials and firmness along with a more in-depth blurb about all the dakis they sell a short scroll down, though it notably is missing the extra blurb for the Kumoame.
The Kumoame is there most expensive option available, costing $224.35 ($145 USD) by itself, adding the cheapest shipping option increases the total price to $309.45 ($200 USD). This is pricey for people with a tight budget, but incredibly luxury dakis can easily fetch a much higher price.
Raising a ticket on their site is easy via the help tab and clicking on the "contact us" button. My first order had errors in the details I input, from raising the ticket to reaching a resolution only took approx 1-2 days.
Shipping and Packaging
The cheapest shipping to Australia takes up to approx 40 days, which is unfortunately long but understandable since the package is bulky.
When delivered it arrived in a plain cardboard box labelled "Pillow Insert". The daki inside is packed in a vacuum sealed bag with a few extra little goodies too. With the daki you'll typically get 2 small vacuum sealed bags with extra stuffing, a keychain of the mascot that corresponds with your daki, and a postcard and set of stickers depicting art made from what I assume to be artists that work closely/are commissioned by Dakimakuri.
The Dakimakura
I've had my first Kumoame for about 3~ months now, with my second arriving just a few days ago. (I loved the first one so much I splurged on a second.) When taking the daki out of it's packaging it takes a while to completely fluff up. This was apparent to me when unpacking my new one and comparing it to my older one.
The weight is immediately noticeable compared to the significantly lighter Chinese bootleg and the CMD9900LS. Lying beneath it and hugging it is definitely a nice experience at least for myself. (How do they make it so weighty but so squishy at the same time??)
The feel of the case and the filling is great, both feel high quality. The case feels durable and does hold my daki covers in place nicely, much better compared to the CMD9900LS. The filling itself is incredibly fine and has not formed any clumps up to the 3 month mark.
The hugging feel is excellent, on a much higher tier to the bootleg and the CMD9900LS. The website describes the daki as having an "extra squishy mochi feel" which I believe suits perfectly for anyone that has experienced feeling and eating some good mochi. Another way to describe it would be the squish of a marshmallow if the marshmallow was also much denser and heavier. When hugging the Kumoame I can't resist giving it a good squish, even kneading it with my hands.
I weighed both using my bathroom scales, which are cheap so take these results with a grain of salt. Though reportedly only approx 6.5kg I found both of mine weighed up to 8kg~ after weighing them both multiple times. Personally I don't find this to be an issue. Weight variance between the two dakis was minimal, at most being 0.1kg different.
Final Thoughts
I honestly love the Kumoame, which is why I ended up purchasing a second one. The excellent squish, weight, and premium feeling materials make it worth the money spent in my opinion. Both were a significant purchase for me, and I do not intend to buy anymore for a long time unless I intend to bankrupt myself looking for the ultimate hugging experience. If you have the funds I 100% recommend grabbing one if the specs tick all your requirements. I hope my little review can help any future buyers out if the are on the fence.

I had to ship them out a bit earlier than I wanted because the one in the bottom right was already there nearly 60 days.
