Before I begin, I want to make my key stances known. I believe in the public education crisis and how it has disproportionately affected many kids and young teens. I believe kids should receive little to no screen time, should have an involved relationship with their parents, and that enabling phone addiction in them is a form of abuse. Lastly, I believe that it's valid to be worried, scared, or angry about this issue, but the conversations I've heard from lots of early Gen Z and older have irked me. 

I'm irritated because in response to this crisis, older generations are using it as an opportunity to bully kids. The amount of the-kids-can't-read-related content that's devolved into picking on Gen Alpha or alarmism is incredibly disheartening to see. And it's not like this crisis has no solutions, either. There are things we can do like (including but not limited to) advocating for the repeal of No Child Left Behind, pushing for better parental accommodations in the workplace, and bolstering the amount of child-friendly public spaces. Anyone seem to care about solutions, though? Nope! The vast majority of people "voicing their concern" about the education crisis are content with getting people to give up on an entire generation and take pleasure in its downfall. It's fucking disgusting. 

It really bothers me because I know a lot of these "slow students" and "Ipad kids" are really just neurodivergent, and as someone with Autism and ADHD, it brings back painful memories of the childhood ableism I've dealt with. This "kids can't read" discourse has digitized that ableism and foisted it on a generation whose childhoods couldn't be more bleak already. Personally, I remember hating academics and learning because of how I was treated. Do y'all seriously think that after seeing this discourse (and young children definitely are) that struggling kids will be more interested in their education? Or would they instead internalize a deep sense of shame, give up on their academic development, and make this issue even worse? You can't expect this generation to invest in themselves if all you do is talk about how "there's no hope for them." 

Also, if you think that I'm somehow "anti-teacher" in this post, I'm not. I'm aware that teachers nowadays are given too little to work with and that it it isn't their job to raise other people's kids. Additionally, I'm aware a lot of this comes down to shitty parents needing to step up, but there's a much broader conversation to be had about the privatization of education, increased costs of living, and decreased opportunities for community. More importantly, we need to stop shaming the group of people that will suffer the most from all of this: the kids themselves.
