Does anyone have any idea what genre of jazz is used in the background. It is so good bit I'm not able to ascertain what it is?
Was it Off Beat Humor, Dark Comedy, Surreal, Irony, or Dry Humor?
I just like how the story can be equal parts serious...and still add humor like someone flying across the street from being thrown😂😂If only I knew specifically what genres I was dealing with so I could understand the writing process better.
I remember watching the anime back in the day and seeing how the studio kept pushing out sequel after sequel, trying to get the main story finished (something I wish someone did for Baccano...). And I remember it ending on somewhat conclusive note. So is the anime a full adaptation, or does the main story go on in the novels? Like I don't mean spin-off's or something, I mean the core stroy that I have followed so far.
I only watched the first few episodes, starting with Coalgirls, and I thought they did some things well like names and even using English in quotes when characters use English (like "go west" mood). But they completely mistranslate some things that make it frustrating to watch, like calling strangers/foreigners "criminals".
I tried HorribleSubs and it was okay but the names are annoying because they subtitle names that aren't even said because in Japanese they are saying family name, so it's jarring to read the first name since it doesn't sync with what I am hearing. And they mistranslate the English "One Dollars" as "Wanderers" so I think continuing with these subtitles will be a mistake as well.
I honestly held my seat as thought I was going up a scary roller-coaster, only to be splashed after the first hill in the pool of disappointment. I don't mind water coasters but my cash got soggy. That how I feel after I purchased this from Amazon. I was promised greatness and at the end I just got wet. The kind of wet that makes me avoid this area in the theme park so it's safe to say I won't visit the sequels or specials.
Story was ominous early, but as more secrets are revealed through the show my only reaction could have been, "Oh". I'm being honest, I think every point or heading this show has was time filler. Nothing mattered. It didn't matter. I was just forced to attempt to care for the facts and then hope everything goes well for a character I liked? I couldn't bring myself to enjoy any of the characters. 6/10, mediocre, at best.
Art was pretty boring to me. They tried to visualize the inner-city 'hood' but it seemed they only knew how by removing light and adding dirt. 7/10
I had purchased a dual-package with a dub and a Japanese version with English subs. The dub was so awful, they could've used Cortana or Siri, or freaking Stephen Hawking to produce more range of emotion in their voice.
The sub version was better, I don't know Japanese but their voices didn't boil me over in a rage. 5/10, don't contract out to bad dubbers.
I know this leans towards a drama more than any other genre. However, Every. Single. Character were intense drama queens with over the top reactions. The only one who was reasonable through the whole show wasn't even human. They might've meant it, but I knew they didn't because they weren't even reasonably believable as 'secrets' were revealed. 6/10 characters that deserved to better secrets.
To end the rant, I want to point out that I did enjoy the beginning. The more they revealed the big secrets the less I became surprised, with a general reaction of 'finally' or 'duh'. I really just don't get how this is so popular. 6/10
As usual I'm very late to the hype party, but for those of you still around, I just finished watching Durarara. I had recently finished a rewatch of Baccano, a show which has aged like fine wine, but I had never seen Durarara. Some friends recommended it to me, and I pretty much binged it.
Both Baccano and Durarara definitely have one thing in common: they both excel with their character writing. Narita clearly has a talent for portraying moral ambiguity in a way that makes his characters extremely fascinating. You can't really pin a lot of them down as good people or bad people, and anytime it seems like you'll be able to, there's another twist thrown your way - just like real people. But where Durarara differs is that it also proved that Narita can write intriguing inter-character dynamics just as well. Durarara has a great pathos to it, and is able to take those same complex character motives to create complex character relationships.
Case in point, what was one of the biggest shocks to me: Shinra and Celty. When Shinra first showed up, I thought I knew exactly what his character was going to be. He was just going to be the eternally friendzoned, forever alone sort who was only there for the comedy of being rejected over and over, and by a headless woman nonetheless. Then they got together. That alone was a twist, but dear God, I fully understand why they're on so many top anime pairings lists. Their relationship was genuinely precious despite - or perhaps BECAUSE - of how silly a concept it was. The strangeness just made the passion all the more heartwarming.
I know the pairing has some detractors; there were some toxic moments and a bit of tsundere comedy that could feel somewhat out of place. Some of these moments are a bit misinterpreted imho (guys, Celty has a lot more going on - even in Season 1 - than just "I want my head back") but the vibe was certainly intentional, and in my opinion, for the best. It helped to keep their relationship complex and interesting, as opposed to falling into a generic fluffy rut that so many pairings fall into. It was clear that both of them were flawed, but their flaws were understood and accepted, both by the characters and the story. Shinra in particular could have so easily been some generic nice-guy, but his obsessive elements played off his nice-guy persona and made him so much more interesting.
While Shinra and Celty was definitely a show-stealer, they were hardly the only impressive dynamic. Shizou, ultimate chad that he is, and Izaya, ultimate SOB that he is, had a rivalry that I absolutely ate up. I've joked it's like seeing rank 10 strength go after rank 10 agility, but their personalities are what made it really interesting. You have Shizou, a rampaging beast with a heart of gold behind an irritable exterior, and Izaya, an (almost) total monster who claims to love humanity but does all he can to cause unnecessary chaos. It's brute strength against cunning, blinding rage against cool-headed calculation, hidden kindness against shallow words. The two played off each other amazingly well as rivals.
When those four were the focus, the show was at its best. As to be expected though, the show definitely suffered from a bloated cast. Some characters were reduced to overdone jokes, some characters seemed interesting but had nothing to do (F for Izaya's sisters), and some ate up a lot of screen time without going anywhere interesting for an extended period. The story with Mikado, Masomi, and Anri does eventually develop nicely, but for a long stretch it felt too much like generic shonen for me to get into. The second half of the first season really fell flat for me for this reason. I feel like I'll probably appreciate Mikado especially with a rewatch, but I wish the twist with his character had been foreshadowed a bit more. On the other hand, the subplot around Ruri Hijiribe for example was just totally forgettable, and I'm less confident my opinion on it would improve much. But hey, in a show with this much going on, you're gonna have some slips.
Tl;dr
- The character writing in this show, as in Baccano, was incredible
- Celty and Shinra was precious and complex
- Shizou and Izaya was an amazing rivalry
- The shonen elements dragged it on a bit, but they did ultimately end up going in an interesting way
So yeah, great show, and I think it's cemented me as a fan of Narita between this and Baccano. If I had to pick one between the two, I'd have to say Baccano does feel more cohesive. But that said, both are well worth watching and I expect I'll come back in the future with even more appreciation for Durarara as I did for Baccano.
Thanks for reading and feel free to let me know your thoughts!
as the title says, where can i watch this for free? ive seen some legit free websites but they lead to crunchyroll and crunchyroll took down DRRR. no pirates, or places that ask for a free limited time subscription.
Hey all I finally remembered this show, and am on a quest to have it on blu-ray for my collection. No easy task since the evil aniplex licensed this show. I some how got the planets to align and go the complete season 1 limited edition box set off ebay for like $70 "sooo lucky!" I think it was a japanese import but it does have the english dub as an option so im pleased.
Ok the part where im stuck now is season 2, or (x2?) Ok the wiki says it was release in 6 volumes. "again screw aniplex" but was there never a complete series box set for season 2? Am i screwed and must rely on luck to find all 6 volumes of season 2? I found volume 3 blu-ray on ebay for $20 I snatched it up really fast, but the only other ones I ever see are (Shou) volume 1 and 2 on sale for like $70-90 a piece. Can't seem to find volume 4,5,6.
I plan on reading durarara one day but would rather just watch the anime instead of having to read each individual volume. How many volumes does the entire anime series cover? Are there any major parts missing?
so i heard that all of ryohgo narita's works take place within the same world / universe, and i was wondering about all of his established stories he's started
durarara
baccano
vamp (i believe?)
i'm assuming this applies to dead mount death play as well?
please let me know if there are any others i should check out, i plan on reading all of his works (excluding the bleach light novels)
Does anyone know where I can find it online for free??
I'm doing a lecture on Neck Injuries that come to the Emergency Department in the United States. #humblebrag. And lo, I discover that of the 2.5 million visits in 2018 that came for a serious neck injury, about 0.6% of them ALSO decided to take that moment to talk to the doctor about their constipation.
And suddenly, I was overwhelmed by my LOVE for Emergency Department patients. I fully expect none of the attendees to get the reference I'm dropping into the lecture, but it is their loss, I suppose.
By creating the Dollars, everything went fine until it went out his control.
After that, he isolated himself from Kida and Sonohara but if not for Celty, he would have ended up in the wrong direction that would gotten himself killed.
At least he learned his lesson to never abuse his power that he is unaware of again.
His personality profile says " He also shows guilt over hurting others unnecessarily" I think he does but I want to be sure.
If anybody has a reliable website I'd love a recommendation.
I am trying to purchase the entire series in light novels after watching season 1 of the anime, and I am wondering which ones to purchase ?
on barnes and nobles i added all of the ones with the title "durarara vol x (light novel)" to the cart
but what are the ones with "RE;DOLLARS Arc" in the title?
please let me know the difference between these and what reading order the series goes in!
