Trees planted in Protaras May 2022 in memory of the 'young students that died early'

I'm holidaying in beautiful Protaras and have walked past the beach promenade near the Nausicaa Hotel wondering what happened as it sounds really sad. It's a beautiful spot and must be about 20 trees planted in memory of young students. Does anyone know what happened?

Maternity benefit application

Hi all,

I’m wondering for anyone who went through the maternity benefit process, how long did it take for your application to be approved and how long did it take until you received payments?

My application has been pending for a month, status being “under consideration” and I’m due in two weeks… everyone Ive spoken to has claimed that it takes them around 3 months to pay you?! Meaning I won’t have any money for another two, possibly three months. Where on earth is the logic in this????

Cypriot citizenship help

Hi,

Finding the whole process and if I can apply for a Cypriot passport or not very confusing and would really appreciate if anyone could offer some advice. Few facts which may help.

Me: Born in Germany (British army camp) 1976 and have a British passport

Mother: Born in Cyprus in 1955 and lives there, she has both a Cypriot and British passport (I have a big family there who are all Cypriot since the dawn of time)

Father: Born in the UK 1944 and has a British passport.

Would really be great to get any advice. Thanks

Mark

Rental car question/problem

Hi! Me and a couple friends are visiting Cyprus for the first time next week and we are very excited.

However there is one detail we did not pay attention to when booking our rental car. You are supposed to have your driver’s license for at least 3 years. I’ve had mine for 2 years and 10 months so I’m 2 months short. What are the chances they will still give us the car? Are we screwed?

We are landing in Larnaca at 18:00 and our hotel is in Paphos. Is there any way we can still get to our hotel if we can’t get a car?

Any help is appreciated!

Cyprus' first and last train

Did you know Cyprus once had a railway system? Established in 1905 under British colonial rule, the Cyprus Government Railway primarily served the mining industry, transporting copper ore to ports for export across a 122-kilometer network.

Despite its World War II importance, financial constraints led to its closure in 1951. Today, remnants serve as historical landmarks, showcasing Cyprus's industrial past.

Hiring a Marketing Project Manager

Kalimera!

I’m looking to hire a project manager for our marketing team. It’s a new role within the department so the successful candidate would be free to establish best practices and frameworks from scratch and help us grow.

A PMP certification is highly advantageous but not a requirement if you demonstrate working project management experience.

The role is based in Limassol but with a flexible hybrid model.

If anyone here is interested, just send me a message privately so I point you to the LinkedIn job post to apply.

Thanks!

Driving a Motorcycle in Cyprus - Death wish or not?

Having heard many bad rumors about Cypriot drivers (careless, distractive, not used to coexist with bikes...), I would like to hear your opinion about this.

I'm Greek, so careless drivers is the most common thing here, but even like that I hear Greeks In Cyprus saying it's 10 times worse there.

Are any of you driving motorcycles in Cyprus? If so, are you feeling in great danger there or it's just a rumor?

2-Way mirror in Cyprus

I am trying to find a place that sells or manufactures custom 2-way mirrors in Cyprus preferably in Nicosia. I need it for a smart mirror project where I want to place a screen behind the mirror. I asked and went to multiple places but no one has those, any idea where I can get it from?

I already tried: Constantinou Bros Rovertos Nicolaou DIY & Glass Center Υαλοκατασκευές Κούλλης Μουστάκας and called others that I don't remember

Ercan Airport

Can someone help me get my head around legality / immigration treatment when it comes to using Ercan airport, I've read a few threads on this but can't really get a handle on it

I'm planning to take up residency in Cyprus soon, UK passport. I'll arrive through Larnaca when I make the move but the general problem is after that once I live in Cyprus I need to go to and through Istanbul quite frequently for work - so it'd be supremely more convenient to use Ercan airport for those trips as there are direct flights.

From other posts I get the illegal entry issue when it comes to mixing arrival and departure airports, but best I can tell Ercan outbound and inbound after I'm there already is okay? They'll just consider I never left Cyprus as the last valid entry on my immigration record is my original Larnaca arrival? Is that correct?

A follow up question there also. I have to spend a minimum amount of time for Cyprus tax residency - which is generally something a good amount of people want to get their hands on. If that's really is how immigration treat it i.e. ECN - ECN is viewed as not leaving the country by GC - surely anyone could just defraud the system with some LCA-ECN-ECN-LCA itinerary months apart and spend like a day total physically in Cyprus? I'm not doing that to be clear I'll be well over the minimum time, I just don't really understand how it can work in that case.

Sandflies/No seeums

My family and I had a lovely time visiting Cyprus (Paphos and Larnaca) in February…everyone was kind and compared to US…drastically less expensive. My only concern is my daughter and I built an amazing sandcastle only to return to our room to see many bug bites that appeared on our legs/arms/hands. We didn’t feel any bugs biting us at the time. We both have at least 6 bites remaining and they are still super red and itchy. Is this common?

Palestine - Israel Megathread III - Everything about the conflict goes here

Five months ago(9/11/2024) we created our second Megathread about the war in Gaza. Five months and the war is still ongoing. Five months and Benjamin Netanyahu is now declaring a new attack to Rafah...

Thousands..thirty thousands Gazans dead. Almost 2 millions Gazan refugees...

Palestine - Israel Megathread I

Palestine - Israel Megathread II

Posts about the situation in Gaza/Israel/Palestine including the Genocide case against Israel in the International Court of Justice should be posted here. The following exceptions apply:

  • Posts about the conflict that are directly related to Cyprus (e.g President of Cyprus proposing a sea humanitarian corridor to Palestine)
  • News about the conflict coming from Cypriot sources. For example Cypriot newspapers including but not limited to Alithia, BugunKibris, CyprusMail, Dialogos, Havadis, Kathemerini, KibrisGazetesi, KibrisPostasi, Philenews, Politis, ReporterCy, Sigmalive, YeniDuzen
  • Posts discussing the Middle East Issue focusing on it as an International Problem rather than the current conflict

As a subreddit we condemn all the attacks against civillians regardless of the attacker. Our hope remains an immediate ceasefire that will allow the people of Gaza to return to their now destroyed cities, towns and villages, a chance for these people to mourn their dead and rebuild their lives on the ruins of Gaza. Israel needs listen to the calls of the UN Security Council and stop the bloodpath, put an end to this madness, allow humanitarian aid to reach the people of Gaza. We support Cyprus Amaltheia initiative to provide the Palestinian people with humanitarian aid and we condemn the murders of the 7 aid workers from the World Central Kitchen.

Once again we condemn the attack of Hamas on the 7th of October and hope for the immediate and unconditional release of all civillian hostages.

Our condolences to all the people, Palestinians, Israelis and everyone else for their losses...

Just like for the Cyprus Problem we support a solution based on the UNSC Resolutions. A two-state solution, namely Israel and Palestine, living in peace side by side within secure and recognized borders, with East Jerusalem serving as the capital of the Palestinian state. The cycle of violence needs to end. The peaceful coexistence of the two peoples is possible.

I think some of my plans are ruined due to the migration office's lack of transparency and communication

Tl;dr: The migration office was not transparent on their regulations/processes for my type of student visa so now I'll probably have to risk overstaying my tourist visa in the country. Also my mom is coming all the way from the US in a few weeks and there's no way I can show her the other side of the country while having an expired visa.

Hey all. I just wanted to say that I have had a lovely time here in you country so far. It's small and quaint, but rather beautiful and with some great weather as well. However, all of a sudden, an immigration/residency issue has put a bit of a dark cloud over my head for the rest of my time I have planned here.

For context, I'm an American studying an Erasmus masters degree (it's a thing, but it's not too common). Anyway, as Erasmus usually goes, my program involves studying in multiple EU institutions: in my case the first university was in Barcelona and now this semester I'm at UCY. As part of this mobility, I (and some other non-EU colleagues) first established official residency in Spain; this would facilitate an easy transition to Cyprus. Based on agreements that Cyprus has for this unique situation, the host institution (my uni in Barcelona) sends all of our official documents directly to the migration office of Cyprus so that they may approve. We had taken care of this months ago (as early as late October) and have had no issues since then. Click here to see exactly what the migration office says is required for students in this situation. Greek version here. This page is what has led us to the trouble we're having today.

Even before arriving to the island, we asked the UCY international student office if there was anything we had to do on our end. Nope, everything will be taken care of between Barcelona, UCY, and the Cyprus migration office. Awesome. After a few times of crossing to the occupied side and showing our passports, we wondered if we would receive some sort of official Cyprus identification. Once again, we asked the international student office if there was anything we needed to do and if we would receive some sort of ID. Nope, there's nothing else we need to do. Also, because it's a unique situation we won't be receiving a Cypriot ID and that our EU ID from Spain will suffice. Fantastic.

Fast forward to a few days ago: I was passing through to the occupied side and, after the GC officer scanned my passport, he informed me that my tourist visa would be expiring in about a week. I casually explained to him that no, I'm not a tourist and that I have a student visa as part of this multilateral agreement between Cyprus and other EU countries. The officer just kinda shrugged his shoulders, showed me his computer screen, and that I was still under a tourist visa with an expiry date soon. Naturally, I was very confused by this, so I emailed a few people such as my program director, the UCY international student office, etc.

After many emails and phone calls exchanged through many parties, the director of the international student office came to speak to my class on Monday afternoon after our lecture. As it turns out, according to the migration office, even though we had already established residency in the EU and that we already sent all of our documentation directly to the migration office before arriving, we still apparently need to formally apply for a student visa. I explained to the director that there's no way this was possible: I even looked at the website myself and it says nothing about having to apply for a visa for students in our situation. She agreed wholeheartedly and said that she was just as confused by the lack of transparency in their regulations and overall lack of communication from migration. The UCY has apparently never had to deal with a situation such as this before (not to mention that immigration laws are constantly changing) which is also why they don't know the ins and outs of this. Regardless, the director said she's going to fight for us as much as possible because she wholly believes this is the migration office's fault. Perhaps the worst part of it is the fact that we sent our information and documents to migration before we arrived--yet they never informed anyone that we would still need to apply for a visa??

I'm only here for the next month-and-a-half, but my tourist visa will be expiring in a few days. My mom will be travelling all the way here from the US (meaning a very long and expensive trip) at the end of May, and, based on the way things currently stand, it doesn't seem like I'll be able to show her the other side of the country if I can't cross due to having an expired visa. Not to mention that I could possibly get shit from immigration control when I leave the country as well. I'm hoping I wouldn't get fined and/or banned from visiting for a few months, but you never know.

I apologize for the long post and I know that in the grand scheme of things this really isn't a big deal. I mean no disrespect but the inadequacy and lack of transparency and communication has been nothing short of frustrating. But, as one of my Cypriot friends has already told me: "Welcome to Cyprus!"

‘Reprehensible behaviour on internet should be a crime’

An article on todays Cyprus Mail states that ‘Reprehensible behaviour on internet should be a crime’

I realize that some people may agree with this, I personally think it is giving the Govt. too much power when it comes to freedom of speech. Laws such as this can be conveniently used against anyone if the Govt. does not agree with something posted on the internet will they simply put a warrant out for your arrest to silence your opinion? The other possibility is for censoring what content that Cypriot's will have access to if they label it as offensive, etc.

Who will be in charge of determining if something is offensive, or if it is misinformation or “reprehensible behaviour"?

Excerpts from the article below

Attorney-general George Savvides on Monday called on parliament to pass a bill which would criminalise what he called “reprehensible behaviour” on the internet.

The bill would criminalise the posting of written or illustrated messages containing “grossly offensive, obscene, or threatening content” in addition, “the posting of a message with false content intended to cause annoyance, harassment, or concern” would also be criminalised were the bill to become law.

This clause is important, he said, as “the ability to use the internet also brings multiple negative effects related to the rapid distribution of fake news, misinformation, and manipulation of the public, as well as the interference with individuals’ privacy.”
