Habitat for Humanity partner family in Cornelius pays off mortgage, now owns their home outright

A local family that bought their first house through West Tuality Habitat for Humanity’s home ownership program in 2002 has paid off their mortgage and now owns their home in Cornelius outright. Donaciano and Dora Dominguez and their children, Sofia, then 9, and Chano, then 5, moved from a mobile home where they had been living into the Cornelius home built by Habitat volunteers and with their own contributions through sweat equity.

The Dominguez home was the third built by volunteers and partners in the West Tuality chapter. The final mortgage payments were made by their now adult son, Chano, who is in the Pharmacy Residency Program at the University of California at Davis. Their daughter, Sophia, is now teaching at Cornelius Elementary School. Donaciano and Dora are now retired.

A celebration was held with the family, along with employees and volunteers from West Tuality Habitat and friends and neighbors to rededicate the house and honor the family’s achievement. In addition to a symbolic burning of the home’s mortgage, remarks were given by Cornelius Jeffrey C. Dalin, staff and board members from West Tuality Habitat, and members of the family.

Volunteer photographers needed by local Habitat for Humanity affiliate

Volunteer photographers needed by local Habitat for Humanity affiliate

West Tuality Habitat for Humanity, which serves Western Washington County, has several group volunteering events coming up where volunteers will paint and help with neighborhood cleanups in Forest Grove and Cornelius. But we need volunteers to help take photos of these events!

You can volunteer at just one event or at multiple events as a photographer. You need to have your own smart phone or digital camera and you need to know how to upload these to a shared space of your choosing - a Google photos drive, for instance, or DropBox, or download them onto a flashdrive you can pass onto us - so that we can access and use these photos within two business days of the volunteer event.

You can read a list of dates and more about these volunteering opportunities and the requirements of volunteers, and why we involve volunteers in these roles, here:

tell Washington County what you think housing & community service priorities should be

Washington County and the cities of Beaverton and Hillsboro are conducting a survey to better understand the housing and community service needs of residents. Your answers will help determine how to invest federal resources over the next five years.

It would be great if there are a LOT of responses from Western Washington County - Forest Grove, Cornelius, North Plains, Gaston, Banks, Timber, Buxton, et. al.

Responses are anonymous and should take about 10-15 minutes. There will be a drawing for three (3) $100 gift cards to be awarded from a random drawing at the close of the survey.

Easy volunteering at blood drives managed by the American Red Cross

One of the easiest volunteering activities is working an American Red Cross blood drive, and there is a critical shortage of volunteers for blood drives in Washington County, including Forest Grove and Cornelius.

A volunteer goes through an easy online training, and then has to agree to sign up for a shift at least once a month. Shifts are about 6 hours. As a blood drive volunteer - called an Ambassador - you sit at a desk and check people in as they arrive for their donation time. You also keep an eye on people after they have donated and are enjoying the provided snacks, to make sure they don't faint in that 15 minute window after they have finished donating.

You get to sign up for the day, time and place you want to volunteer.

The blood drive could be in a church fellowship hall, in a city hall meeting room, at a conference room at Nike, at a school - and very often, there's guest wi fi provided from the place where the drive is taking place. There's always a place to park nearby and, often, places are near mass transit.

You don't have to do anything at all regarding the actual blood donations.

I have done this kind of volunteering - great time to read, do a Duolingo lesson, or just chat with people before or after their donation.

The Red Cross Cascades Region serves the greater Portland, Oregon metro area, including Washington and Clackamas counties.

It's SO easy to sign up and get started:

https://volunteerconnection.redcross.org/

(disclosure - I was a volunteer for the Red Cross in Washington County for about a year)

Greeters, helpers at blood donation drives in Forest Grove & Cornelius urgently needed

As a blood drive volunteer, you can volunteer as much as you want - several times a month or just once a month. On weekends or during the week. Whatever. And the American Red Cross makes it ridiculous easy to sign up, get trained online, and get started elsewhere.

And if you dream of being deployed to disaster zones elsewhere, you first have to have deep experience as a part of your own ARC teams in your own area (disaster action teams, shelter staff teams especially). And the American Red Cross is your way in.

The American Red Cross URGENTLY needs:

  • Blood Donor Ambassadors
  • Blood Transportation Specialists
  • Disaster Action Team members
  • Shelter Services staff members
  • Disaster Health Services Team (if you are a licensed healthcare provider)
  • Administrative help

Habitat for Humanity volunteers partner with community for a neighborhood cleanup

A four photo montage of volunteers posing outside, all wearing very warm work clothes, as well as a photo of little decorative Christmas mailboxes filled with goodies that were distributed to families by the Dwell congregation

A big thank you to members of the Dwell congregation for turning out on a cold morning and joining the community of Cornelius Manor for a neighborhood cleanup organized by West Tuality Habitat for Humanity. These events vastly improve people's homes and quality of life, and bring us all together in a shared purpose.

Want to volunteer with West Tuality Habitat on a community cleanup, a home repair for a vulnerable homeowner, on a house building project or at the ReStore? No skills necessary and you can volunteer as an individual (you don't have to be a part of a group that wants to volunteer). Join us!

Update on pods moving to Cornelius & community meetings June 28 and July 11

The Safe Rest Pods, which opened last October, will move to Cornelius at the end of the month. Once the pods move, they will undergo construction to be equipped with electricity ahead of the hotter summer months. The 30 pods are currently located at SW 17th Ave. and will reopen at their new location at North 4th Ave. in August. They're a partnership between Washington County, the City of Hillsboro, and Open Door HousingWorks, which operates the site.

Jes Larson, the assistant director for the Washington County Department of Housing Services, says the pods will continue to move around Washington County over the next several years as needed until more permanent shelter options are built. The intent is to move more people into permanent housing, Larson said.

"The goal is to have three pod villages in operation at all times across the county until we have the permanent shelter infrastructure in place to replace these temporary options," Larson said.

There are community meetings planned in Cornelius on June 28 and July 11.

Student volunteers help West Tuality Habitat for Humanity

Students from Caitlin Gable school have been volunteering with West Tuality Habitat for Humanity in recent days. They have helped clean up the yards and throw away items for vulnerable home owners in a manufactured home community in Forest Grove, Oregon, many of them seniors and people with disabilities, and helped prepare a lot in rural Washington County (officially part of Cornelius) for home building later this year in this time.

West Tuality Habitat ReStore needs your plastic bags!

The Forest Grove ReStore, less than a mile from the Cornelius-Forest Grove border, needs your clean plastic bags! We have plenty of paper bags, but many of our customers prefer plastic bags for small items they buy here at the ReStore. They can have brands on them - just as long as they are not ripped and they are CLEAN. You can drop such off at the Forest Grove ReStore, Monday through Saturday, 9 to 5. Thank you!

Spring Fundraiser! Help our school!

Cornelius Elementary School will be running our annual spring fundraiser campaign, “Lend a Paw,” now through the month of April. 100% of all cash or check donations will come directly to our school and benefit our kids.

If you are not familiar with our school, it serves students in grades preK-4th and provides a two-way Spanish/English immersion program. We are a title 1 school and we serve a low income population. We cannot depend entirely on our students’ families to provide extra funding for enrichment opportunities at our school. We also rely on support from the community. Our goal is to raise $10,000. During our last fundraiser, in 2019, we raised $6,000, with approximately half of this directly from students/families and half from other community/business donations.

If you decide to support our school with a donation your money will be used for things that help support teachers, provide opportunities for students, and build community, such as:

  • Classroom field trips
  • Classroom supplies and playground equipment
  • College campus visits
  • Community building events such as our Back to School BBQ and Family Movie Nights

You will be recognized for your generous donation by a thank you on our school reader board, and we will bring you a certificate to display in your business, if you would like. We can also acknowledge you as a partner organization on our fundraising website.

If you have supported our school in the past we thank you many times over. If you are considering supporting us again or for the first time we assure you that your money will brighten the educational opportunities available to our students.

To make a donation, please make checks payable to Cornelius Elementary Parent Club. You may mail your check to the school at the address below or call and request a parent club member to drop by and pick it up. Your donation may be tax deductible, as we are a non-profit.

We hope you will consider “lending a paw” to support your local students.
