A subreddit to debate Marxism, Socialism and History

General guidelines

  1. The thematic is broad: anything related to the history of communism/Marxism, philosophy classics and sociological inquiry is welcome in all formats (documentaries, lectures, articles, interviews). Example of a good submission: an article by a member of the Frankfurt School on the nature of fascism; a vid by Zizek with lots of snif snifs and so ons. Bad submission: anime or commentary on Chelsea's latest win. I short, we want thought provoking stuff, but beyond that be yourself and post what you feel will generate a good discussion. Links to interesting conversations in other sub also welcome.

  2. Avoid stuff that might piss off other users. No Stalins,no 'tankies are stuck in the past', no 'anarkids do not understand theory' and other inflammatory stuff please. We tried it before and we all know how it went.

  3. (Should go without saying but) do not downvote, use foul language or enter in meaningless foodfights. We are all grown up. This place is for exchange of ideas and disagreeing with arguments and evidence.

Marx's class analysis

After 1848, Marx switches from analysing the proletariat and bourgeoisie (Communist Manifesto) to broadening this and including the finance aristocracy, big bourgeoisie and lumpenproletariat (earliest example I found is the address to the central committee/class struggles in France).

I was wondering if Marx ever explains why he expanded his class analysis to these categories, and whether it marks a fundamental shift in his theory.

(Peter Hayes believes this is so (https://www.jstor.org/stable/657503 if you want the details) , citing a shift from a linear to a circular class analysis.)

Communist manifesto compared to Class Struggles in France

Hi, I'm doing an investigation into whether Marx changed his theory of revolution in the two years between the writings of the Communist Manifesto and Class Struggles in France. I know there is disagreement on whether his changes were minor or fundamental, and I'd welcome any views on this and especially any recommended readings :)

Yo, so... does China actually practice communism

Anymore I mean. It feels like their rise to fame was because of capitalism.

Online Communist Bookclub

I'm a part of an online communist bookclub that's run through discord, and I'd like to let people know that we'll be starting our next book in just over a week, so right now is the perfect time to join!

We'll be reading The German Revolution by Pierre Broue. We decide as a group how much of the book we should read each week, and then Saturdays at 7pm EST we discuss what we've read. We also do a live reading and discussion through voice chat every Sunday at 5pm EST, but that'll be starting The German Revolution much later.

This is the link to join https://discord.gg/nK2w8WveP4

We'd love to have you!
