It's worth remembering quotes from the Dalai Lama, like "He [Chairman Mao] appears to me as a father and he himself considered me as a son. [We had] very good relations." Before the CIA intervention, Tibet and the PRC had friendly and respectful attitudes, following the "Seventeen Point Agreement," which even allowed the Dalai Lama, if he wanted, to go abroad without losing his supreme position in Vajrayana Buddhism.
