Hey folks, I was wondering if anyone here knows whether Colorado School of Mines has any programs or departments that can test water for contaminants. I attended an event recently and they were serving water from a Primo jug, but I have serious doubts about its quality.
The water made me throw up shortly after drinking it, and I’m concerned there may have been contaminants. I still have the water bottle with that exact water, and I had thoroughly cleaned it prior to the event to avoid cross-contamination.
Any advice on where I could take this for testing at Mines, or who I could reach out to, would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for any leads you might have!

Hey yall. So I’m a freshman in computer science, and I was just wondering what the best thing is for me to do to get a job when I graduate. I came in with 20 ish transfer credits, so I was wondering if it would be best to get that cybersecurity cert since I’m interested in that, if I should do one or two specializations in comp sci, if I should do a minor, or if I could do a 4+1 and get a masters. Which of those would a company value most, I guess is what I’m asking. Thank you all!
Hey everyone! I’m trying to decide which professor to take Physics 1 with and would really appreciate any insights. Here are my options:
• Kristine Callan
• Hsiapo Kuo
• Victoria Borish
• Timothy Ohno
I checked Rate My Professors and could only find reviews for Kristine Callan. If anyone has experience with any of these professors or knows who might be the best choice, I’d be super grateful for your help, Thanks in advance
Hey guys, I’m currently a freshman at Mines and I have been struggling a lot with the workload. I think I am going to drop a few classes since I’m not doing well in them.
I was also wondering, would it set me back if I only took 12 credits next semester? Right now, I’m taking 15 credits. I want to major in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering and I think I would need about 127 credits to graduate.
I appreciate any advice! Thank you.
Hey, planning to take aerodynamics in the spring. Its only offered by neal sullivan and ive heard he sucks. Is it a hard class? Im not in mech e and planning to take it as a tech elective as it sounds pretty cool. Thanks
Hey y’all, I’m thinking of taking megn441 intro to robotics as a free elective next semester. It seems like the only reviews available for the course are from when Zhang taught it and they look pretty poor. This next semester Gary Nave will be teaching it and he seems to have good reviews. I was curious if anyone else had any thoughts on it. Also am I screwed if I haven’t taken feedback prior to it? Thanks!
I graduated in May 2024 and I've only just noticed that my transcript technically doesn't list my minor as awarded. It lists the curriculum as
"Major:
CS - Data Science Spclty
Minor - Computational & Applied Math"
but under degrees awarded it only lists
"Primary Degree
Program: BS Computer Science
Major: CS - Data Science Spclty"
Does this mean that I wasn't awarded my minor and should I contact the registrar? Thanks in advance!
Does anyone know if Phys 3 is formatted the same way as Phys 1 and 2? Studios, lectures, exams? Please let me know, thanks!
Hey guys I'm from India, done with my undergrad(bachelor's in business communication )and cfa lvl 1 candidate . Do one needs an undergrad degree in science stream in order to get admission in minning engineering as well as other similar courses??
i got an email about scholarships that was signed off with “We hope to see you soon – and congratulations again on your acceptance to Mines!”, but my portal still says my application is under review. does that mean i’ll be accepted soon? how long did it take yall to be accepted?
Im a sophmore meche and next semester I need to take circuits. Its been recomended that I take EE circuits because the class is allegedly easier and it has better professors, but the 3 hour lab sounds like a lot. Should I take EE circuits or the circuit classes that most meches take?
I wanted to take some classes at Red Rocks, but I’m not sure how the process works. Anyone know how much taking one class is? Which classes would y’all recommend taking at Red Rocks instead of Mines?
Hi, I'm an incoming out of state freshman and planning to get my driver license in college. I already have the instruction permit, just wondering what route would the DMV at golden go thru and what will be tested. (I don't have the money to get a instructor from the driving school)
My sister is at Mines right now girlies 💅💅💅
I honestly might get rejected based off of my common app anyways, but if I do get accepted, would it be strange that we both go to the same collage?
i’m doing pretty well in ochem right now, was wondering about the comparison in difficulty between ochem 1 and 2 from past students as well as what concepts i need to really understand before taking it.
As above. If so, what was it?
I just want to speak with some students in upper level EE courses, I'm currently considering the switch between Mech and EE and I just want to feel out the major and get some insight.
Looking for a contact, but it's a bit tricky to find online. I remember begging friends for spare volleyballs when it all started, would like to do something for the team. Any help appreciated.
I'm specifically asking about Intro to Electrical Circuits (EE version).
The office hours for this class is just meeting up with the professor, and I don't really want to make him re-explain all of the lectures I didn't go to. I'm super behind in general and would definitely benefit from a more personalized approach to learning. Has anyone taken this class and is willing to tutor for money? (it'd be great if you've had T.A experience or something of the sort as well, but it's not a requirement for me)
DM me if so! Thanks!
Hello, I am a sophomore in QBE with a minor in Data Science who was planning on doing pre med to be a doctor, but recently I’ve been thinking about what else I could do (school has been kicking my butt so 6 and a half more years of school sounds rough). I’ve really only heard of people going into research or pre med, but I was wondering if any of y’all knew what my options were before I blindly run into pre med.
I’ve been thinking about transferring out of Mines. I’m not doing good in any of my core classes (especially Calc) and it’s really bringing me down. The semester is almost over and I feel like I can’t do anything to bring my grade up. I’ve tried going to office hours and even learning it by myself from YouTube videos.
I have brought it up to my dad, but he hates the idea of me transferring to another school. I’m just unsure on what to do.
This should be a cool discussion. We’re trying to do a little more advertising.
i haven't showed up to one my my classes for a bit because there are no tests and i am prioritizing other classes in that time, and the prof is giving me a 0 in the participation category (understandable to take a hit but not a 0 as i have been to some classes), and he stated that I am at risk of not passing the class. This hit will drop my grade into the mid 70s, so is a C- a passing grade or D-? I am a senior expected to graduate this december do I am a little bit worried I shot myself in the foot.
Hey everyone,
I’m starting my Master’s in Petroleum Engineering at Mines this Spring, and I could really use some advice! I’m an international student, and while I’m super excited, there are a lot of things on my mind that I’d love to hear your thoughts on.
First, for anyone who’s been through the program: What courses should I definitely take, and which ones would you say are better to avoid? I’m trying to make the most out of my time at Mines, so any recommendations are welcome.
Also, as an international student, what are some things I should keep in mind? Anything from navigating the workload to figuring out life in Golden. I’m covering all the costs of my program since there aren’t scholarships for non-thesis options, so if anyone has tips on financial aid (even outside of the usual loan programs), I’m all ears. I’ve got one loan approved, but I’m open to exploring other options.
On the social side, I’m also curious—what are some fun things to do around Golden? Any suggestions for getting involved or places to hang out? And speaking of that, how’s the housing situation near campus? I’ve heard mixed things, so I’m hoping for some insider tips on the best areas to live that won’t break the bank but are still convenient.
Lastly, for those who aren’t native English speakers: How was it adjusting to the academic environment and just everyday interactions? I’ve been working on my English, but it’s definitely something I’m thinking about.
Oh, and one more thing! How easy or difficult is it to land a job in the petroleum industry after graduating from this program? I’d love to hear about your experiences or advice on that too.
Looking forward to hearing from you all! Thanks so much.
Hello! I am currently a high school senior looking to apply early decision. I am incredibly stressed because my Common App personal essay is not really where I want it to be. However, nothing on the admissions page mentioned Mines’ consideration of the essay and it is not listed as required on common app itself.
So my question is, is it worth the work to get it perfect, or should I apply without the personal essay?
My stats if it changes anything are as follows: 4.0 UW 4.64 W GPA, 34 ACT, 19 AP classes (6 senior year, 9 junior year, 3 sophomore, 1 freshman, 5s on all important exams like calc and physics), I have decent extracurriculars, and one strong letter of recommendation from my physics teacher. Also everyone who’s read my supplements thought they were good and I’m planning to major in petroleum engineering. Huge thanks to anyone who took the time to read all that and maybe help me out!
I'm in community college still but my friends from high school who went into engineering studied at Mines and CU Boulder. I've been looking at their socials and they all ended up working at big companies.
I want a change in my life so I was thinking about Mines and Boulder. I know that the admissions requires good grades but my first year in CC I didn't study so I was placed on probation. I have a 3.02 and worked hard to bring up those grades.
Right now I can't afford either of those 2 colleges. I was thinking of either doing CSU Pueblo or UCCS as they are both closer and cheaper. In Colorado Springs people really respect Mines and Boulder engineering, I just wish I had the grades & money to get into either.
Considering both for mechanical engineering -
would love some opinions. Thanks!
I need to add a HASS 400 class to my schedule which is already a little packed so I'm thinking of taking an online class. If anyone has taken an online class at Mines, what was it like? Was it worth it? I'd love to hear, especially if it was a HASS class.
