Cloth Diapering 101

Hi All,
I'm considering switching over to cloth diapers from disposables for my 15 month old girl. What is your favorite brand? I want something good quality, but not too expensive. Thanks!
I suspect I have a heavy wetter on my hands. I have been trying out cloth diapering for the past three weeks. I have a mix of pockets (alva baby and bum genius) and a couple of covers (hi baby - I think they're essentially a thirsties knockoff.) So far nothing is leak-proof. Most of my stash is second-hand.
Daycare is willing to use the pockets and tried for a week, but they've told me that I've got to figure out a better solution for the leaking before they will try again. They need him to be able to go two hours without leaking any worse than he does in disposables. With disposables he'll usually leak a couple times a week, and so far with cloth it's usually twice per day at minimum. Boy oh boy, can this kid pee.
The microfiber inserts that came with the diapers seem to be at least part of the problem. I have had slightly more success wrapping a gerber cotton pre-fold around some small g-diapers inserts that came in a stash I bought second hand, and then shoving the whole thing into a pocket diaper. I believe the g-diapers inserts are two layers of fleece with two layers of hemp/cotton.
Has anyone had success with pocket diapers and a heavy wetter? What did you stuff them with?
Have you mastered your wash routine? Do your clean diapers smell? Did you recently buy a new washer/dryer? Chat all things laundry!
I placed an order on Oct 18th and saw that the tat was like 5-10 days. 2 weeks went by and I heard nothing. I messaged on their website on the 4th of November asking if my order had shipped. The owner said that they remember seeing my order but they lost the shipping label and would reprint it, ship it out the next day, and send me a giftcard for the inconvenience. Totally understandable, not a biggie. They sent the giftcard via email the next day but never sent me an updated tracking number or any updates on the shipment. I messaged this morning asking for an update, they said they had shipped it out and that was it. I responded asking for a tracking number for the order around 10 am this morning and no response. I’m really trying to give them a chance, but I’m feeling sort of frustrated. Has anyone had any issues with this company?
Hello!
I just bought a stash of used pocket diapers. I’m going to strip them today, then do a bleach soak to sanitize.
I’ve been doing a lot of reading on various cleaning methods and I just want to make sure I have a good handle on things before I venture down this new path of cloth diapering.
My washing machine is a top load HE that has a big agitator in it. I use Purex free and clear. I plan to wash diapers every 2 days. First do a normal wash on cold with a partial cap of detergent, then do a heavy duty hot wash with a full cap and throw in other laundry if there is any?
My washer does “auto sense fill” to decide how much water it fills with. I was reading the fluff love website and it recommended 1.5-2 caps of this laundry detergent for the wash cycle?? Is that not way too much? I was thinking 1 capful for a full load.
Please let me know if there’s things to be adjusted here, or if you have suggestions for the amount of detergent. Mostly I’m unsure if I use detergent for the “pre-wash”, and how much detergent to use for that and the main wash. Also if you add bleach to the cycle once in a while - how much and how often??
Thanks!
First time mom, we’re really wanting to try the cloth diaper system for our little girl in April! But I’m so confused with what type of diaper would be the easiest for a first timer 😅 I really like the idea of covers because I feel like if it’s not a super wet/dirty liner you could still use the same cover ? Any and all advice is appreciated!!
Hi all, I am interested in using diaper liners to cut down on laundry, however I see that most of them available in the US are made from bamboo viscose. This is not a textile I personally like to purchase. However, there are a few that are 100% cotton or cellulose. Does anyone have experience will these disposable liners? I think the brands I've seen are Charlie Banana, Disana, SmartBottoms and Poplini. Also I have seen them advertise that they don't dissolve immediately and can help with newborn poop or liquid poops. (Obviously I do not intend to put any of these in the toilet, and instead will dispose in the trash.)
What brand is your favorite!?
Mine is currently La La Booty !
I have two brands of cloth diapers and both have different directions for washing. Then what I see in this sub and in the Facebook group I’m in is different from both of these directions.
I have half Wegreeco and half Mama Koala 3.0. I’m using the Mama Koala only for my newborn at the moment because the Wegreeco is not as adjustable and too big. Both were bought new and I’ve done a few washes on all of them but I did it on cold.
What temp setting is the best for these pocket diapers?
Can the covers for pocket diapers be washed on hot with inserts? Or will that mess them up?
Thanks!
I was wondering if anyone has joined this recently or is an active member! I applied a few weeks ago and haven't heard anything nor been approved. I barely use Facebook so I don't know if I ought to follow up in some way. Or maybe this group is kind of inactive?
I use organic cotton prefolds and wool covers 100% of the time and it works really well for us. I’m going to visit my family in Japan in a few months and they are asking me if I could do disposables while we’re at their house. I really don’t want to and I told her I’d consider looking into it. I’m only willing to use disposables if they are 100% (preferably organic) cotton, not “enhanced” or lined with it. Does anybody know if these exist? If not, do you have any ideas for if i can just dispose of cloth diapers, like maybe a diy option? I was thinking I could just use a bunch of old t-shirts or thrifted sheets as prefolds to throw away but I don’t know how absorbent that would be lol
Edit: my baby is mostly using the toilet these days so I don’t need too many diapers while there. Anything disposable we’ve used in the past causes a pretty bad reaction so I’m really just looking for ideas!
So I am newer to cloth diapers but I’ve used a few different brands and types. For a while we were just using bumgenius AIOs and a few bumgenius pocket diapers. I also used prefolds with covers but I bought some LPO and Stout house and I must say, I love stout house SO much.
I love the inner mesh like liner, the wider back elastic and the size is amazing for my 15lb 3 month old. They fit him like a glove and are wide enough to stuff with prefolds like I like. I’ve not had a single leak ever. They wash so nicely and just feel so well made to me! Obsessed.
Just wanted to share. ❤️🥹🫶🏻
Anyone know the deal with totsbots? Used to be reliable quality and uk made but now they’re reopened but their Scotland factory is still closed?
Know of any good deals going on or upcoming? Did you find a lot on Marketplace and aren’t quite sure if it’s a great deal? Share sales or ask away. Happy shopping!
We have barnyard smell-- I'm not sure why. We use a standard wash routine (first wash quick and warm, second wash 'heavy duty' and hot with tide free and clear 1/2 cap in prewash, top line in main wash, we have soft water. We put agitators in the wash). This is our second cloth diaper baby but we got a new he machine a few months ago to replace our energy inefficient 1980s model and I don't think it washes as well. A few weeks ago we left the diapers for 5 days (usually we go 2-3) and got barnyard. We did a bleach soak and everything was fine. With the wash yesterday we had it again after the diapers went through the dryer. I ran it again in the washer with a small amount of bleach in the 2nd rinse and seems to have gotten the smell out, or at least it smells like bleach :) Two questions:
Does anyone know if Texas Tushies has a Black Friday sale? I was about to buy 13 diapers and inserts from them but wondering if it’s smarter to wait for a big sale?
what’s the newborn hack to make one size fits most diapers work for newborns? and what creams/ointments etc do you recommend with cloth diapers?
I've been cloth diapering for eight years so I want to say I have some experience under my belt. "Eight years" being said, I've recently replaced the pocket diapers and all-in-ones in my stash with simple PUL covers, which I will reuse 2 or 3 times depending on the circumstances before I swap out with a new one. I never reuse with overnight diapers because those are usually pretty full by morning.
I have a front loading HE washer that has always been good to me, and for inserts (a mix of prefolds, bamboo, and microfiber) it still gets them clean on a pre-rinse and 2.5 hour power wash with Tide powder detergent.
I keep the covers separate, wash them separately, and tumble dry on low to try and better preserve the PUL. Now I'm thinking I may not be going hard enough on them? They stink to high heaven. I do a "normal" wash (1 hr) with warm water, and they still stink. I've also tried washing them with my inserts, but the inserts will come out smelling great while the covers still stink. What gives? It's like the PUL is holding on to the smell somehow.
I reset them today with a splash of bleach, but I would like to avoid doing that if I can. Is there a special detergent or non chlorine bleach I could use on them in the future?
Hi everyone! I’m looking for advice to switch to some type of cloth diaper/reusable potty training undies for my 2 year old little girl. She’s really excited about potty training and our current diapers she can’t get off herself (Coterie brand). I’ll probably keep using these for nighttime but does anyone have recommendations on cloth diapers or potty training undies for sensitive skin?
I’ve looked at Charlie Banana, Thirsties Training Pants and Esembly Baby but they are out of her size. She’s definitely a bigger girl and wears size 5 diapers right now. Thank you!
Background: this is my third baby. I’ve done cloth diapering with older babies but never from birth (or six weeks ish). Let me know if I have any gaps I need to fill! This is all thrifted and in good condition. I was recently using all but the newborn stuff with my second child. I have: 2 Charlie banana newborn pockets 3 honest newborn covers 5 random amazon one size covers 6 simple being one size covers 4 medium bummis Velcro covers 6 econobum covers probably medium 2 small simplex all in ones 30 assorted poly inserts and cotton prefolds
FTM here, my LO is 8 weeks and I’ve been cloth diapering for the last two weeks. Boy is it a learning curve! I bought used diapers. A selection of types but I’ve started with the Grovia AIOs in the newborn size (my kid is still in newborn size disposables too). No issue with hard water so I followed Fluff Love University’s recommendation for bleaching the diapers to sterilize before starting. We’ve had issues with leaks and all that and generally things are getting easier, however, no matter what I try, I cannot get all of the poop out of the microfiber.
I’ve been looking to both FLU and CCN for wash guides, as well as this sub. I wash every other day and start with a quick wash load with half the detergent (hot water, with a pre-soak and a double rinse). Then I use full detergent and wash on heavy duty (second pre-soak, hot water, and double rinse).
Detergent is powdered Free & Clear Arm & Hammer and I also add OxiClean powder for stain removal.
Things I’ve tried in addition to this that haven’t solved the problem:
I started bulking the loads to see if maybe I needed more agitation since I have an upright HE machine.
Started spraying the poopy diapers off before washing them as described above. Baby is EBF and I kept reading that their poop is water soluble so this wasn’t necessary but figured I would try anyway. No dice, even with very thorough spraying, there was still poop mashed into the fibers in spots.
Doing a 3rd wash.
Doing two heavy duty loads instead of one quick wash and one heavy duty.
I really want to continue cloth diapering, but this is feeling excessive. From a time/energy perspective but also water resource perspective . So much water is being used in this process. I still feel like it’s better than disposables in our landfills, so don’t come at me. I’m just feeling discouraged and unsure of how to proceed.
Just discovered what I find to be the most beautiful cloth diaper brand, Sumo Baby. They are made in Germany and are cover with liner system. The fabric on the cover and liner were the impetus to start the company as the designer won a big award for developing a new natural fiber material with superior absorbency abilities. Has anyone tried them?! I am so intrigued...
so i really want to do cloths at least until i start my baby on solids and so far i’ve learned that until baby starts solids their poop is water soluble so no need to pre rinse (does that mean i need to pre wash still? what the heck is a pre wash and that means theres a post wash too???)
im talking with a seller on fb marketplace about buying their lot of diapers from them, its 30 all in ones but they’re also selling a bunchhhh of inserts with them. i thought all in ones just got slapped on the baby and you called it a day and it was like a disposable diaper but you wash it and re use it afterwards? why the inserts?
also disposal liners. she has some thrown into the lot as well. they just line the diaper so they catch poop and then you throw it away so you don’t have to spray anything off the diaper? right?
im overwhelmed with all of the do’s and don’ts and how this all works and being a mom is hard haha
We just bought our first house! We opted to keep the washer/dryer because they match and they're newer, but then I realized the washer is a front loader. My current washer is a top loader. Is there really a difference in top versus front loaders for washing cloth diapers or is it negligible?
RN, we have a diaper service, so I don't currently have a wash routine 6 months in. But my plan is to put up an extra shower curtain rod in my son's new bathroom and do a "pre-wash" by spraying off every diaper (nos. 1 and 2) and hanging them up and then wash in the washer every 4th day or so. Does this seem reasonable? How does this play into the top versus front loading question?
Thank you in advance!!
So I’m a FTM and it’s my first time cloth diapering, I’m pretty sure I got the gist of the routine but what do I do in the in between stages. So when they are wet and dirty, where are they stored before the daily pre wash, right now I have 2 small travel wet bag, then once they are pre washed where do you store them before they get the main-wash, especially since I’ve read about people who don’t do the main wash for like 3 days, so do the 2-3 previous days of diapers just sit there wet those days waiting for the mainwash? Or are they hang dried in between prewash and main wash, I thought you only dry the items once they are completely clean, I’ve let his dirty pee diapers sit out to dry in the day before we wash so it’s not just wet and stinky but they don’t dry in time before the wash so the diapers are sitting wet with pee for hours until they are pre washed and then do they sit all wet after the pre wash just waiting for the mainwash a couple days later? I have an open hamper with holes that can be used, I can get a milk crate for in between washing as well, I just need to know where and how you store them in between them wearing the diapers and the pre wash, and in between the pre wash and mainwash, thank you!
When I first switched to cloth I bought Disana lanolin and I just recently ran out. Discovered I had been gifted a tube on lansinoh and tried to use that but it doesn’t seem to be working. I’m sure I’m doing something wrong. The cover that I haven’t tried still works great but the other one literally was fully soaked through this morning.
Would someone be willing to take 5 minutes to write a detailed step by step guide for me?
Before I was using the Disana wash and then lanolin right after following the directions on the bottles
Hello friends,
I currently have a Samsung washer, and I've customised the cycles exactly to my liking. But I've just been offered an LG wash tower, which seems like it might be a bit more useful longterm because the dryer condenser is easier to clean. But I'm nervous that it doesn't seem as customisable, and I'm not sure how it'll go cleaning my daughter's nappies, and we're just about to start solids.
Does anyone here have an LG wash tower? How are you finding it for washing cloth nappies? Does it have good settings?
Thanks for your help!
I had been anxiously awaiting my Alvababy All in one diapers from their long 2 week journey from China and I am already so impressed/ happy! Most of my stash is esembly inners and outters, but I also have a couple MK pockets, Texas tushie AIOs, Smart bottoms AIOs, GroVia O.N.E.S, GroVia organic All in Ones, and a Kinder diaper.
My expectations were low for how cheap they were at $6 each, 1/5 the price of some of mine, but I love how it feels thin like my Kirkland disposables were, but the elastic has held in huge poops that only Esembly seemed to be able to. It has a sewn in 4 layer bamboo blend insert and a pocket if you want to boost it. I haven’t added an insert and it’s been great for day pees. Would definitely need to use an insert if using at night as I have a heavy wetter at night.
They are currently offering 300 free loads (with purchase of 300 loads), which would make them a bit cheaper than what I currently use. It does have surfactants (Alkyl Polyglucoside, Sodium Cocoate and Sodium Dodecylbenzenesulfonate) but is it enough?
Hi, I just saw this huge diaper rash on my baby's thighs. Is this because of the cloth diapering. I recently changed to a single 2 HR heavy duty wash instead of 2 wash cycles. Could this have caused this? https://imgur.com/a/HFxAwfG
Edit to add diagnosis: hand, foot and mouth.
