 Born on March 16, 1751- Virginia native, founder and 4th US President **James Madison** who helped organize the Philadelphia Convention to draft the Constitution and wrote the Virginia Plan, a fundamental part of the Constitution. At first, Madison advocated for a more powerful federal government. He wrote the *Federalist Papers* with Alexander Hamilton and John Jay which are some of the most authoritative writings on Constitutional law. He was also the most forceful and effective advocate at Virginia’s Ratification Convention. Later, Madison came to oppose Hamilton’s financial plans and emerged as the leader of opposition to Washington’s administration in Congress. Thomas Jefferson held similar views and he and Madison forged a strong alliance which led to the formation of the first US political party, the Democratic-Republicans (today Democrat Party). As president, Madison declared war on Britain and oversaw the American side of the War of 1812.

Tilden despite the fact that Tilden won the popular vote. The Republicans agreed to end Reconstruction in the South to win over enough Southern Democrats for Hayes.
