Question Thread - December 02, 2024

Welcome to the Daily Question thread at r/churning !

This is the thread to post questions about churning for miles/points/cash. Just because you have a question about credit cards does NOT mean it belongs here. If you’re brand new here, please read the wiki before posting.

* Please use the search engine first - many basic questions have been asked before.

* Please also consider scanning (CTRL-F) the last couple days worth of Question threads

* If you have questions about what card to get, ask here. If you have questions about manufactured spending, ask here. If you have questions about bank account bonuses, ask here.

This subreddit relies heavily on self-moderation. That means that if you ask something that shows you haven’t done any research, you’re going to get a lot of downvotes.

News and Updates Thread - December 02, 2024

Welcome to the daily discussion thread!

Please post topics for discussion here. While some questions can be used to start a discussion/debate, most questions belong in the question thread unless you love getting downvotes (if that link doesn’t work for you for some reason, the question thread is always the first post on our community’s front page). If your discussion is about manufactured spending, there's a thread for that. If you have a simple data point to share, there's a thread for that too.

Weekly Off Topic Thread - Week of December 02, 2024

This is the Weekly Off-Topic thread

There's more to this hobby than just credit cards - it spreads out into travel aspirations, what luggage or wallet you're using, or what flavor kombucha your local WeWork is serving. Please use this thread to talk about all things even tangentially related to churning. Memes, jokes, and off-topic content are allowed (and encouraged) here. Please use our regular threads to ask basic questions, ask questions about what card to get, or talk about MS. But if it's off-topic elsewhere, you're on-topic here.

Regular rules still apply.

Have fun!

Data Points Weekly - Week of November 28, 2024

This is the Weekly Data Points Central thread

In this little hobby of ours, we constantly rely on sharing the experiences and data points by others to optimize our award earning process. From how often you can apply for a card or bank account, to how soon a bank pays out the bonus. All the sidebar articles and information in our recurring threads are basically an abstracted version of all the DPs collected by the community at large. If you have an DP about a credit card, like a retention offer or recon experience, please post it here. If you have a DP about a bank bonus, please post it in the newest bank bonus thread (If that link doesn't work for you for whatever reason, either click on the "bank bonus" link in the sidebar or on new reddit, search for "bank bonus weekly" while limiting your search to this subreddit.

Enjoy!

What Card Should I Get? Weekly Thread - Week of November 27, 2024

Welcome to the What Card Should I Get Weekly Thread, where we try to figure out what card you should get or critique your current plans or AOR if you're doing it that way). Everything is YMMV and these are all opinions. Agree or disagree with your votes. As always read the wiki, do your research, and happy churning.

Also, check out the Credit Card Recommendation Flowchart before posting in this thread.

  1. The flowchart can answer 95% of all "What card should I get?" questions. By continuing to post, you must explain why you feel the flowchart does not answer your question. Asking for feedback ("The flowchart says I should get X - is that still the best choice?") is absolutely allowed.
  2. What is your credit score?
  3. What cards do you currently have or have you had in the past (including closed cards), along with dates of when you were approved for the cards? Please include month and year for any card approved in the last 3 years.
  4. How much natural spend can you put on a new card(s) in 3 months?
  5. Are you willing to MS, and if so, how much in 3 months? See this page for a primer on MS. Plastiq (for rent/mortgage/loan payments) and bank account funding are often good options for beginners.
  6. Are you open to applying for business cards? If not, why? See this post and this wiki question to learn more.
  7. How many new cards are you interested in getting? Are you interested in getting into churning regularly (if you aren't already)? Or are you just looking to get a new card(s) for now but not get into churning long-term?
  8. Are you targeting points, Companion Passes, hotel or airline statuses, First Class, Biz, Economy seating(s) or cash back?
  9. What point/miles do you currently have?
  10. What is the airport you're flying out of?
  11. Where would you like to go? (The more specific you are, the better someone can recommend the right card. Tokyo is great, "International travel" is way too vague)

Bank Bonus Weekly Thread - Week of November 26, 2024

This is the Weekly Bank Account Bonus Thread. Use it for anything related to bank accounts and bonuses, such as:

* Churning mechanisms (DD, etc)

* Data points (did bank X bonus arrive)

* Other bank account discussions/questions

Before asking a question, first search:

You can also call the bank with questions, but only if you are precisely following the T&C. Otherwise, don’t call the bank!

Also: The mod team is aware that there are bank bonuses that either require a referral or have elevated bonuses when using a referral. Examples would be Schwab and Varo. Do not ask for referrals in this thread - if you want/need a referral for one of those accounts, please check the "Miscellaneous Referrals" thread on r/churningreferrals. Posting or soliciting referral links for those accounts will result in being banned from this sub.

Please post new bank churning opportunities as top level posts for wider visibility.

How much would you have to make to stop various churning activities?

As we are heading into a slow week here at r/churning, I thought it might be fun to see how people would approach churning if they made more money. Obviously, based on our demographics surveys, we have a large range of incomes here partaking in a range of churning related activities, so I’d love to know if you currently make X, how much you’d have to make before you’d stop something you already do. To be clear, I’m not asking anybody to divulge your salary or household income. I’d love to hear something like “I currently make X. To stop doing VGC>MO, I’d need to make 1.5X. To stop doing buying groups, I’d need to make 2X. To stop churning all together, I’d need to make 15X” or whatever you think it would take for you to change how you approach this hobby.
