Lost glasses on bike

Hey! Kind of a long shot but my glasses fell out of my pocket while I was riding my bike to work yesterday and I wanted to see if anyone might have seen them. I go SW on Milwaukee from LS stop to Damen and south on Damen from the blue line stop to Chicago. Theyre in a small yellow pouch. TIA for any tips!

Western and Logan Blvd underpass

Almost became the third ghost bike at this intersection. What the fuck is wrong with people and why do they always have to run that turn?!

I’m not usually a fan traffic cams but they need some here.

Driver in HP looking for their hit-and-run victim.

If you were the injured cyclist, PLEASE report the hit-and-run to the police so that your medical bills will be covered by their car insurance. The adrenaline has likely worn off by now, and the pain and damage will last for months-decades without appropriate treatment.

I don’t ride, so I don’t know many Chicago bike groups. Please share this information!

Bike riding classes

My 17yo daughter cannot ride a bike and has finally expressed an interest in learning. Unfortunately, I can’t teach her, due to orthopedic issues. I saw the CDOT program, but it’s only got last year’s dates and no info about 2024. Most of the other programs are aimed at little kids, the REI one on one classes are full, and I’m just not finding anyplace else where teens can learn biking. Any suggestions?

There is a free Metra weekend coming up (8-9 June) if you have never taken the train up to Waukegan and biked back (or other routes please do post) that's a great time to do it. Back from Joliet is tricky but doable. Sometimes ya just need a tiny free push....

Get on the train EARLY, avoid the crowds and the heat.

Can we do a pet peeve thread?

Slow day at work, let's vent about stuff.

In general I really hate the way drivers use stop signs here. Some of them never actually come to a complete stop and just inch forward until it's their turn, which is irritating because they are technically blowing the stop sign and it's impossible to tell if they're going to follow through or respect that it's not their turn.

And I regularly see a "two-fer", where one driver goes on their turn and the driver behind them also decides to go. That seems insane to me

Ghost Bike Requests

How does one go about requesting that a ghost bike be set up? Does every victim get one usually? Who organizes these? Don Heggeman was killed by a drunk driver in a hit and run last October in Lincoln Square and there isn't a memorial up in that location on Damen.

Route advice?

Hi! I am a beginner city biker in Chicago and want to get from Lakeview to West Loop. Is there any alternative going straight down Halsted? It seems like a busy street and I want to be cautious.

I know there is the alternative of taking the Lakefront Trail all the way down, but I worry about getting from the lakefront to West Loop.

Any suggestions or any experiences with any of the routes welcome!

Recently got Doored...camera suggestions?

Two days ago I was on the blue Divvy & the car swung open the door of course not paying attention or looking back.

Thankfully my speed was very slow which probably saved me from life changing or ending situation.

Now I'm thinking about getting a camera for rides to protect myself and collect evidence in case something happens.

I am debating the new insta360 x4. Any advice or recommendations y'all use ?

I'm an commuter and use bikes as mode of transportation and not recreational use.

Accident avoiding car in new bike lanes

Part vent, part question. I was headed south on Kedzie by the jewel off Addison in the new protected bike lanes. There was a car between 10-15 feet ahead of me that started to turn right into the jewel parking lot across the bike lane and I wasn't able to brake in time (fixie asshole, I know). I screamed loud enough to get the car's attention before they blocked the entire lane so I could swerve around but I collided with a concrete stop sign base, totaled my frame and flipped over the handlebars.

I just want to know who would technically be at fault if I didn't collide with the car, but the incident was caused by avoiding them. I'm 90% sure that the driver didn't signal, but it wasn't what was on my mind during the incident.

This is exactly the kind of accident I expected putting the bike lanes in cross traffic and not allowing an escape route.

Thanks in advance, and I'll have brakes on the next bike. 😞❤️

Looking for a route from West Logan/Hermosa to East Evanston

What the title says!

I’ve done it before and got tripped up on the route I took so I figured I would ask here to see if you folks have any suggestions.

I’m comfortable on roads and I’m basically going from Armitage and Pulaski to the south Evanston lakefront area.

Take the 606 and then go North? Take California all the way north but then what? I’d obviously like to avoid Western and Ashland as much as possible…

Thank you!

LP to WL better routes? :(

I have been commuting for the west loop for the last couple years from LP and it’s really just getting too stressful on Halsted - feel like I am almost hit every time I’m taking the ride by drivers cutting into the bike like or last minute swerving with no signals around someone waiting to turn left. Just can’t do it anymore

Does anyone have any better route recs? I’ve tried cortland to Elston and it’s not bad!

Best way to ride from Morton Grove to Bucktown?

I am new to the city and have to commute from Morton Grove to Bucktown. Is there a safe route to get all the way there? I took the North Branch Trail to Foster but wasn't sure where to go from there. Any advice helps, thanks.

Buy vs Divvy

I’m new to the city and trying to be better at biking more places. I have a cheap shitty standard bike, but for longer rides it is just not the best.

I was considering getting a cheap-ish ebike, but now I’m second guessing myself and wondering if a Divvy membership would be worth it.

For some background, my wife and I both work remote, so we aren’t actively commuting. This would primarily be for going to occasional appointments and for fun (restaurants, just going for rides on the weekends, etc).

We have secured bike storage in our building but do have some concerns about security when locking up bikes elsewhere.

We also have 2 fairly well-stocked Divvy stations within a couple of blocks.

Our current thoughts are to do a year of Divvy to see how we like relying more on bikes and then maybe buy our own next year. But also considering just pulling the trigger on our own.

Any thoughts?

DPRT Closures

Does anyone have a recent update on the DPRT closures? Haven’t been out there in a while and planning to ride tomorrow.

https://fpdcc.com/about/plans-projects/des-plaines-river-trail-improvements/#current-construction

I usually park at Catherine Chevalier and ride north, but that section has been closed the last few times I was there.

Also, conditions? Still muddy?
