From WNC- looking for recommendations

hello, i’m here with my family in the durham / chapel hill area while we wait for power and drinking water to be restored at our home in WNC.

i have a toddler and I heard the museum is free for wnc folks displaced from the hurricane. i am grateful for that.

made me wonder if there are any resources or discounted services for adults. My nervous system is so wracked from this disaster, and i could use a yoga class or sound healing oe massage, chiropractor, or acupuncture. i’m so so tired and the stress of asheville and the surrounding areas has been very challenging. It is A LOT.

anyone have any insight? i’m

Bike trail destinations?

We’re headed to Chapel Hill on our kids’ fall break. We have a wedding at the weekend but are figuring out how to fill our week. Our grade schoolers love to ride their own bikes and ride a few miles to/from school on urban paths in our own city, would love to plan some loops or out and backs with a kid friendly destination to break up the ride. Any suggestion? Up to an hour drive to starting point is okay.

GODSPELL, 11-20 Oct around the corner in Carrboro!

Hello friends and neighbors! I wanted to make people aware of our upcoming show in Carrboro — all are welcome, and we'd love to see you there!

Stone Soup Theatre Company is proud to present

Godspell!

Shows are October 11 - 20 at Center Theater, 300 E Main Street in Carrboro. Tickets are available through our website stonesouptheatreco.com or at TicketLeap.

Godspell presents various parables of Jesus through family-friendly song, dance, and hefty doses of comic timing, dissolving hauntingly into the story of the Last Supper and the Crucifixion. Throughout the show, the cast explore the messages of kindness, love, and forgiveness that underlie the parables, focusing on the idea of building a beloved community with our neighbors here and now. Godspell was the first major musical theatre offering from three-time Grammy and Academy Award winner Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin, Children of Eden), presented here in its 2012 revision that adds the song "Beautiful City" to well-known songs like "Day by Day", "By My Side", and "All For The Best".

In these difficult, polarizing times, Godspell's message of tolerance, kindness, and love are very badly needed. We're so proud to have a brilliant, funny cast of actors that includes a diverse cross-section of gender, race, sexuality, and age bringing this wonderful story to life.

Come join us!

Doxy’s Kitchen

Anyone remember a band called Doxy’s Kitchen? They used to fill up the Cat’s Cradle in the late 90’s. Back when CH was the next Seattle….haha. They were kind of jazzy like DMB. Fun group. New Age Truck Stop was the name of their album.

Just wondering because the internet seemed to forget them, as did streaming services. I think I still have their CD, alas no CD player.

New Subreddit for Helene Free Labor volunteers in Asheville

Hey all, l've had many many people asking if they can help with cleanup efforts after the flood. I've gotten plugged in with some community organizers. This is for laborers only not search and rescue or social services of any kind. This is a private group and I'll need to ok you with a quick chat before you're let in. There's some warnings and disclosures you must read and agree to before joining the sub. First step is to request to join here but if you’re having a hard time just send me a private chat.

Anyone interested in ordering from the VA department of forestry this year and want to join an order?

https://buyvatrees.com/shop/

The VA department of forestry sells seedlings of trees native to this part of the country and the cost per seedling goes down as you order more. For example, 5 American plum seedlings are $3 each, but 10 are $2 each. Shipping is a little over $30 total.

The plants are about one year old and ship in late winter, generally late February/early march.

I plan on ordering a handful but if another person or two is thinking about ordering anyway, if we do a single order it would be cheaper per tree. PM me if interested in doing so, when they come we can meet at a place like the Wegmans so I can get you your trees.

I will say from experience (I've ordered before) while they do give you a range of when it ships, you might not be given the exact date they will arrive and as they are bare root, you really want to get them planted ASAP.

Help needed: Any hotels/hostels offering relief for those affected by Helene?

Temp housing - Post Helene

I’m looking for temporary housing for my partner’s family after Hurricane Helene. They need a one bedroom apartment that must be wheelchair/handicap accessible.

We prefer it to be furnished since they came here with nothing, but it's not a deal breaker. We’re open on the price as long as there is flexibility regarding the timeline and length of stay. They are also open to other areas outside of Chapel Hill/Carrboro and in the triangle area!

Any leads or suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Looking for guitar teacher

Hey guys, I’ve been playing electric guitar on and off for about a year now and feel like I’m not really advancing so I’m looking to try guitar lessons.

I’m mainly wanting to play somewhat heavier stuff like hardcore punk, metal, and heavy rock so if you are or know a guitar teacher in the area that’s sort of familiar with playing that genre please put me on

I am a student so I’m not loaded so the more reasonable the prices the better, but I do want to ensure I’m paying an equitable amount for your time

I’m in the Carrboro area

With coal ash and other NC climate change catastrophes, how can anyone vote for anyone but Stein?

And Kamala supports fracking....NC was hit hard by the damage fracking did, managed to finally push it out (while Duke ironically imports fracking resources from PA)

Local Lawyer Recommendations

Anyone have any lawyer contacts in the area they would recommend? I'm looking for someone to consult with specifically regarding Real Estate or Property law.

Google searching for lawyers is giving me a bunch of massive firms outside of this area, and I'd very much like to consult with someone familiar with the town code regarding a property dispute.

How prepared is Chapel Hill for heavy rain?

We see what is happening in Western North Carolina in the aftermath of rain from Helene. Asheville received 14” of rain in a few days, and some places in Western NC received much more. What would happen in Chapel Hill if 14”-20” of rain fell here?

Looking for new lawn guy. Who's yours?

State Employees’ Credit Union update: Out of the loop? Here’s what’s been going on. Board election happening now (voting ends Oct. 1)

Long post (apologies), TL;DR & links to more info at end.

Some of you may remember some discussion last year about what was going on at SECU—lots of conversation about controversial decisions and policy changes. If you haven’t been paying attention, here’s some context:

In 2021, SECU hired Jim Hayes. He was the first CEO in SECU history not to be hired from within the ranks of veteran SECU employees. Why does that matter? Well, SECU has been described as a bit of a “unicorn” among financial institutions. It’s the second largest credit union in the country (behind only Navy Federal) at $50 billion, 2.8 million members, 275 local branches, and the largest ATM network in NC. 1 in 4 North Carolinians are members of SECU. This means it can do (and historically has done) more for its members than most credit unions can dream of.

SECU isn’t a bank. It’s a member-owned, not-for-profit, financial cooperative. The last 3 years have seen SECU’s Board make dramatic policy changes that move us closer to resembling for-profit banks than ever before. These include: implementing a discriminatory risk-based lending system, paying out uncompetitive savings rates, preventing members from speaking at our Annual Meeting for the first time in our history, sustaining $250 million in loan losses this year alone, and much more…. (For more on this, see end of post.)

In an extraordinarily rare event for credit unions and not-for-profit organizations, members launched a campaign nominating their own candidates to challenge the board-nominated incumbents in 2023. All 3 member-nominated candidates were elected, but that was only 3 seats on an 11-member board. Right now, this year’s board election is wrapping up on October 1st. This time 4 member-nominated candidates are running against the incumbents.  The board nominated only its own candidates again, which required the member-nominated candidates to gain signatures to get on the ballot—which they did, to the tune of more than 8,000 members across NC.

This member movement has coalesced into a grassroots group called “SECU For All” with the goal of advocating for member rights, restoring SECU’s principles, and defending the mission of SECU: “people helping people.” The member-nominated candidates need our votes to hold this Board of Directors accountable and get SECU back on track. They are 4 leaders with tremendous experience that includes 75+ combined years at SECU.

If you’re a member age 16+, please vote for Jean Blaine, Susie Ford, Julian Hawes, and Kirby Parrish. Here’s the link for instructions on how to vote: secuforall.com/vote

October 1st is the final day to vote online! You can also vote via the ballot you received by mail (must be postmarked by Oct. 1st) or vote in person at the Annual Meeting if you’re registered to attend.

Disclosure: This isn’t my primary Reddit account, but yes I’ve been a user for years and am a lifelong resident of NC. I am an unpaid volunteer with SECU For All and a longtime member of SECU.

TL;DR: SECU has suffered serious changes since 2021; there’s a critically-important contested Board election ending soon (Oct. 1st is the last day to vote). The current Board of Directors has implemented discriminatory risk-based lending system, paid out uncompetitive savings rates, prevented members from speaking at our Annual Meeting for the first time in our history, sustained $250 million in loan losses this year alone, and much more. There’s a grassroots member movement called “SECU For All” challenging the incumbent board with 4 member-nominated candidates—vote for Blaine, Ford, Hawes, & Parrish. secuforall.com/vote

Alternative Rock Artist Looking for Bassist and Drummer

Hey my name is Lucy (artist name Lucy Mayhem). I'm a 22y/o small alternative rock artist. I'm currently looking for a drummer and a bassist for my live band. Looking for people who are available to practice ideally once a week, sometimes more, and willing to potentially commute to practice from Chapel Hill (Due to where everyone lives. Hoping no more then just over 1hr commute from Chapel Hill), and have a passion for rock/alt music. Currently I'm looking for a new practice space, best option right now is in Summerfield, but not 100% committed yet. If you're willing/able to commit to the following, and like my sound, please message me!
