Hi everyone. I have been visiting the states from Africa(country withheld) to spend time with my girlfriend and son for the past 3 years. The last time I visited was December 2022. During this trip my son was diagnosed with autism and my girlfriend turned into my wife and also got pregnant for a second child. While here, I realized that my son needed all the care we can give him because it is difficult for my wife alone. My son doesn't talk and everyday other symptoms are becoming more visible.

I had a business and was well established financially back in Africa. I've made a decision to stay in the states and start a new life here so as to be close to my son that means giving up everything I have built back in Africa given that I cannot handle controlling the business from a distance for long time. The business I was doing would be hard to build from scratch here in the states given my age (37). I sold what I could sell, brought money to the states, joined my wife to buy and own a house, left the apartment they were living in so that my son can live comfortably with plenty of space without having to disturb neighbors in an apartment. Used some of the money and through a special immigration program, I brought my sister to come live with us to support us with the care of my son since he needs family around him. Luckily we got space for him in a therapy program at a behavior center where he'll be going daily.

I have a bachelor's degree in political science and due to this decision of moving I couldn't finish my masters in international development (only left with research and dissertation).

My question is starting a new life in the United states. I am very confused on where and how to start. I have upto 2 years to spare for any school program or apprenticeship. Could anyone advise me on where I can move on from here? I don't want to study for long but I would want a rewarding career that would also give me time to spend with my children. I'd appreciate advise from any career coaches or friends in reddit. Thanks!

What would you do in my situation?

I’m not applying for postgrad but maybe I will in the future .

I’m planning on majoring in engineering at a state college that isn’t really known for engineering, but since I come from a low income family, I want to save as much money as possible. However, I’m not entirely sure if I’m interested in engineering since it’s a hard field to go into, so should I try it out or should I skip it? For more context, I wasn’t always planning on going to college (I was actually going to be a nun lol), and I also wanted to take a gap year to work on my music production and business ideas. However, with my family’s financial situations, I thought it’d be good to go to college and get started on a career path so I could get a stable income someday. Because I always had some interest in the mechanics of things, I was planning on seeing if engineering was a right fit for me at the school and then if it is, transferring to a better engineering school with more prestige. However, if I don’t like it, that means I have a lot of college debt and I have to restart my career…

I’m currently working as a project manager for an electrical contractor and am looking to switch industries. I don’t mind the electrical world, but think I could be happier elsewhere. I have a BFA in acting and only got into the electrical contract industry bc my dad hooked me up with a job. I’ve been at my company 7 years and have hopes to get into executive leadership. Can anyone share their experience switching industries?

i am 25 years old and i really need to take a step and change my life. i really do not have any family or anyone to support me which is one of my biggest concerns. it seems like most of my friends got through school because they lived with their parents or their parents financially supported them while they were in college. i don’t have this and i’m worried if i chose to go to school it will take most of my time and i wont be able to have a job as well to make rent. i’m completely stuck in life and i’m afraid i cant achieve my goals because of this. i also had terrible grades in high school, mainly because i was moved from so many foster homes i lost count (not an exaggeration either) doing my homework and paying attention in class was the least of my priorities, my biggest priority at the time i was in high school was just making sure my little brother and sister were taken care of and happy. my teachers knew i was very intelligent and they knew about my situation so they straight up just let me graduate with probably the lowest gpa ever recorded. it’s so embarrassing i can’t even put it on reddit. i’m worried i wont get accepted into any college because of this. i wish colleges understood this more but they will only see my gpa.

my next question is if i somehow will be able to work and continue my education what profession is the best choice for me? i’m extremely interested in both fields and i’m a very caring and determined person, both of those qualities i think are very important with both fields. i love people and i love taking care of people. i can handle serious situations and i do well under pressure. i think overall the fact that i’m extremely empathetic and have a big heart, i understand that these people i will be doing xrays or ultrasounds on are in very fragile states. everything i researched about being a rad tech had pros but the only con i had was i’m kind of worried about being exposed to radiation every single day. i know there are measures they take to not be but something tells me i still will be exposed a lot. i also think there are so many pros to being an ultrasound tech and the fact that they make more money than rad techs is also a huge plus. the issue is i heard that ultrasound physics is really challenging and the reason i’m worried about that is math wasn’t my strongest subject and i’m afraid i wont excel. however like i said i’m an extremely determined person and if i find a tutor and really try my best i think i can do it but the thought of physics does scare me a little. what should i do?

The company I'm with is quite large and I have the opportunity to speak with someone from a department which I am quite interested in. I'm not so keen on my current role and my manager knows this, and so they have set up a conversation with someone just to chat. I'm not sure exactly what to expect; whether it's going to be interview-esque or just casual but I'm wondering what kind of things I should bring up if given the chance? Is there any points I should touch on? How might I secure an opportunity to transfer departments like this? I'm not sure exactly what I'm asking but I guess I'm just looking for some input. I'm nervous because this could very well lead me another step closer to my forever job.

I just finished my freshman year at Michigan State and it didn’t go as I had hoped. I already didn’t like school much anyway and my heart just wasn’t in it pretty much all year. Side note: my parents pay for my tuition and board. I’m a kinesiology major and the only two jobs I’ve seriously considered are becoming a personal trainer or a gym teacher, both of which have an average salary of abt 50K so it’s not like I’m studying to be a doctor or engineer. I was wondering what are some jobs I could get if I decided I didn’t want to return to college that I could support myself with. Personal training is my no.1 right now seeing as you can get certified for that fairly quickly. Most of my work experience is landscaping and working on a golf course. I work full time in the summer but I don’t make enough to support myself.

I was thinking about going back to school to pursue the medical field and become a nurse, Physcial Therapist Assistant, or Radiology Technician but here is the thing, I have no interest in doing anything in the medical field but after being out in the real world( I’m in my 20s) I’ve realize how hard it is to find a job that provides stability and where you can actually provide for yourself and not struggle. The medical field is a job field where you will always have a job and be paid well. Idk what I’m going to do. Please help!

What are your thoughts when it comes to applying this advice/ techniques to job interviews?

The job market is hard, so the last 5 interviews I’ve had were with the hiring manager themselves rather than an initial HR person to give me the basics of the company. So I feel like most of the interview time is eaten up by dull drudgery of checking credentials rather than making a connection with the hiring manager.

Should I stick to a technique of answering their questions and saving all my questions for the last 15 minutes? Or should I give answer and follow up with a question that is appropriate but on the verge of being vulnerable (but not too personal)?

As title suggest, I am a Java Developer with 3.5 YoE at Accenture Bangalore with 11LPA. I see all my friends around me either going for Master's or switching. I am confused to the core if I should go for Masters or switch to different organization. I always wanted to move out of India as I have no friends or close family apart from my parents here, but I did not want to shell out huge money. I turned down an MS in US offer as it costed ~50 - 60Lakhs. I come from a humble background with retired parents living in rented flat, and also having around 20k as rent income. Now I have all the documents ready for my MS application in Germany but am confused af if I should go after 3.5~4 years.

I am scared of the huge student loan in USA. In Germany, I am confused if a technical Master's now will be of any use. Further I feel I am biased in my thinking so need POVs from you folks.I am working from home for 3 straight years and have not grown as a person to make such a decision. I'm 28. I've worked allied health jobs in the hospital for the last 4 years. I've saved up a bit and have no dependents. I've grown to realize that there's a lot about working in healthcare that I really do not enjoy in the slightest, but all my professional experience so far has been in this space. I was feeling weird about getting to the end of my 20s without a "real career" so I applied to school and got in. The program would teach me to give anesthesia in the operating room. The role pays very well, 200k for new grads to around 250k with a few years of experience. I'm motivated by money/security to some extent so I applied, also you can get 6-7 weeks of vacation and work 3-4 days a week (shift work) After having gotten in, I'm realizing that maybe the money isn't worth it to me. School hasn't even started yet and I'm consistently waking up feeling anxious and dreading the idea of having people's lives in my hands or possibly making a mistake. It feels bad to pass up the opportunity, but I truly don't see myself being happy working in the operating room and under that much life and death pressure. I feel "funneled" into school or an advanced degree in medicine because I don't know how to pivot away. I'm spending my days crawling reddit and researching different careers. So I don't know how to move on or feel happy. It feels "bad" to pass up this opportunity, but what else can I do? What should I do. Is there anyone here who can relate and found an escape? Anyone who had a biology degree or some work experience in a field like mine with very little opportunity for remote work who were able to successfully navigate to working from home? My dream is to be able to drink coffee and pet my dog. I know a better life is possible than what I am heading towards, and if I am smart enough to learn to give anesthesia I should be capable enough to find a way to work from home and make decent money, right? Or a non-wfh job that just isn't stressful but still pays a living wage.

I'm currently working as a customer service executive for a relatively new company in international airlines process however I've been selected recently fo an interview with a decently famous bank for a back office job. I'm considering which would be a better option for the future as I ultimately want to join anywhere MNC within the next few years. What do you guys think is the better option? My primary goal in life jobwise is to have a decent income and more time which from past experience in banking I won't get at all, however customers mer service is generally dependent on the process availability so if that is gone, chances are you are jobless until you find another one especially in a higher position.

Hello, I am currently a 3rd year Computer Engineering / CS student. My plan is to eventually graduate (of course) and work in some technical role for 2-3 years. After that i would like to pursue an MBA (no yet decided on what specialization).

I know this is a purely subjective question based on your own situation but given that, the current job market (and future outlook), do you think it is worth doing?

I've heard numerous opinions for both answers but no concrete answers as to why. People have told me that it is only worth it if you go to a "blue-chip" business school (so basically one of the top 15) .. is this the case?
