Hi everyone, I'm relatively new to Canada and salary negotiation is a new thing for me. Where I lived before, salaries are usually indicated in the job post and there's very little room for negotiation.
Last week I applied to one postition, and yesterday, I received an email from a recruiter from this company. They asked for my availability for a screening interview, I replied with potential dates and times for next week, and their reply was "Can you please advise your base and total compensation expectations?". I did reply with my expectations (they didn't includea range in their job ad), and told them that I'm happy to discuss this in the interview, but I didn't get a reply and we didn't schedule the screening interview.
Did I screw it up? Was I supposed to reply that we can discuss it during the call instead of sharing my expectations?
I'm reaching out to this amazing community for help. I’m currently preparing for the CFE exam in May 2025, and I aspire to ace it in one go.
However, as much as I’m motivated, I realize the need for guidance and support from someone who has walked this path before. I’m hoping to connect with someone who has cleared the CFE and can mentor me through this journey. Specifically, I would appreciate help with: Strategies for effective study and time management, Guidance on how to approach and solve cases, Reviewing my queries, case solutions, or areas of confusion, Sharing your personal experiences, struggles, and how you overcame them.
I completely understand how valuable your time is, and I don’t expect a lot—just your insights at your convenience would mean the world to me.
A little about me: I’m a Chartered Accountant (India) and currently residing in Scarborough (Canada). I’m struggling to secure a job in the finance field and believe that excelling in the CFE will not only strengthen my profile but also open up better opportunities in the job market.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this. If you can help or know someone who can, please feel free to comment or DM me.

Hi everyone,
I’m feeling a bit frustrated and confused about a situation at work, and I’d really appreciate some advice.
I work in a client-facing role, and all of us on the team are at the same level. We share the same responsibilities, taking clients at our desks and helping out with admin tasks when needed. I always try to be helpful, and when I see someone struggling, I step in to lend a hand without expecting anything in return. But I have this coworker whose behavior is really bothering me.
This coworker has a habit of pointing out mistakes, not just to the person who made them but also to our manager. My manager seems to love this, often praising him for being “very observant.” It feels frustrating because I wouldn’t do that. if I see someone make a mistake, I’d rather quietly help them fix it without making a big deal about it.
What’s worse is that this coworker often avoids work. if he sees you busy with admin tasks, he’ll tell you to take a client even when he’s not taking clients himself. Instead of handling his share of the workload, he’s constantly passing the work off to others. . It feels like he’s avoiding work and just “delegating” to others. Our manager sees this as him being “manager material” and says it’s good that he’s delegating tasks. But to me, it just feels like he’s being lazy and unfair.
On top of that, he frequently boasts about his accomplishments out loud, and our manager praises him for it. Meanwhile, I don’t talk about my achievements because I thought my manager could already see our scores and rankings. I’ve always believed that my work should speak for itself, and I don’t feel comfortable bragging. But now I wonder if staying quiet about my work has made me less visible in my manager’s eyes.
Honestly, I find his behavior hurtful. He acts helpful only when the manager is around, waits for others to make mistakes so he can point them out, and takes credit for small wins while the rest of us quietly do our jobs.
I’m confused because my values are so different. I believe in doing my share of the work, helping others without calling attention to it, and taking responsibility for my tasks instead of passing them onto someone else. But it seems like my manager values my coworker’s approach more.
To the managers here: what do you look for in employees when it comes to leadership potential? Should I adjust my approach to match what my manager seems to value, or is there a way to stay true to my values and still be seen as a leader?
And to fellow employees: how has your job changed your values or personality? Have you ever taken advantage of a coworker’s weakness to get ahead at work? Was it rewarding to do so, even if it meant hurting someone else’s feelings just to gain recognition?
I’d love to hear your thoughts and advice. 🥺

Hey there I'm a single male that is open to look for camp jobs. I use indeed and other sites to look for them but would love some more links or possible leads to more work.
For me it would probably be a year during covid. That was terrible
I have less than 4 months to get a job that pays bare minimum $70k/yr salaried. Ideally $75k, so I can save a tiny ammount each month.
My formal education is in electrical/electronics engineering technology.
My work experience is:
Solar system installer. I wired and installed solar systems as a laborer. Planned wire runs and equipment set up at site.
Electronics technologist & original equipment manufacturer for electronic blasting systems used in mines where I diagnosed and repaired these systems as well as made new specialized equipment for the customers. I also wrote manufacturing procedures in a professional format.
Low voltage systems installer, where I installed low voltage systems (security cameras, alarm systems, and some networking), planned wire runs, wire fished, and commissioned the systems.
-Low voltage systems Manager, where I created schedules for employees, marketed by calling up leads, generated leads using midjourney AI and GIMP to make meta ads driven by $600/month ad budget. Customer service, used Monday as CMS, handled customer complaints, technical questions and assisted foreman and installers remotely when they were stuck in the feild. Read and dispatched for alarm reports and did payroll and quoting and billing as well aged A/R. I also have done some in the field quotes, clinched a 20k job for the company. I also did PO's, managed inventory from a QR system I created and facilitated a major sale of accounts to a massive corporation which took almost 1 year. I also performed HR duties and wrote company policy. I was involved in job ad creation and interview process including termination of employees with documented infractions. Probably more im forgetting about.
My expenses are extremely high since I will be divorced soon and I have 2 kids and already have a tiny house (800sqft, no basement) so I cant really see how I would make do with less given my situation.
I am located in the most remote part of what is still technically south western Ontario. Closest centre's of civilization are Owen Sound and Port Elgin (1hr drive from me).
I am applying to bruce power jobs and Bryce power suppliers but nothing yet.
Any insight? How do I get a job making at least $70k pre tax in less than 4 months?
Hopefully all this context helps, any leads and insight appreciated. Thank you.
Hello guys,
I need feedbacks and responses from the community regarding if anyone is even getting hired in cybersec or not. Personally, its been a year since layoff with 3 years of cyber experience and a degree in it. I've had 30 interviews (including rounds as well + multiple take-home assignments) throughout the year, but same story with either of the 2 responses: ghosting or we found a better candidate.
Now there's a new response I have been seeing "we have put job on hold" on almost all responses, then why even show you are hiring in the first place?
At this point I dont even feel applying because I feel the game is something else, where the companies don't even intend on hiring in the first place at all, just to show vacancies etc. I have applied to entry-level soc level 1positions, IT tech support, the most minimal ones also, at which I started by job journey and still same story "we found better candidate". Despite having multiple certs in networking and pentesting, I dont know what else is required for entry-level positions, let alone how it would be for new grads now.
From recruiters, there are always standard keywords --> do you have CISSP, OSCP etc. why on earth do you need CISSP for entry-level job? one question to them and interview shut in between. (happened in 2 so i stopped further putting up with this question)
Can someone provide me feedback/situation where the hiring was actually done in entry-level cyber positions (soc/cyber security analyst) , not just multiple interview rounds, but legit hiring? I am honestly done with making references, networking etc when the situation is always the same, someone else gets hired because of being close to manager or position put on hold??
Hey am I an idiot for leaving Canada for europe. I had a low paying tech job in Canada with 4 years of experience, and I could not find a single job or get even a single interview after over a thousand applications.
I left for europe where almost every day I was getting interviews. The salary was on par with what I was making in Canada and the cost of living is much lower.
It's insane to think going to europe would bring me more opportunities. I would like to gain some experience in europe and maybe move back to Canada as a senior engineer.
What are your thoughts on this? Am I an idiot for doing this?
Hi everyone,
I’m a hardworking individual with a passion for self-learning and problem-solving. Since moving to Canada, I’ve been working full-time in a warehouse to support my family. Despite the challenges, I’ve invested in myself by completing a Data Analytics Certificate and additional certifications in Python and Statistics.
I don’t have a degree or formal experience in the field, which has made landing a data analytics job challenging. I’m actively looking for an unpaid internship or placement opportunity to gain hands-on experience and start my career in this field.
If anyone has advice, knows of startups open to mentoring someone like me, or can share tips on breaking into the industry without a degree, I’d greatly appreciate your guidance!
Is it a good option to move from US to Canada ? How’s the job market in Canada ? Is it easy to move back to US on TN visa after Canadian citizenship?
I’m a data analyst Tech Stack: Power BI Python SQL etc
I had a phone interview with an HR manager from New York. I applied on the website of the company based in New York and with a branch in Toronto. The job offer, in Toronto, was WordPress developer.
We scheduled the call and a minute before calling me, she sent me an email asking me to send her my resume.
As soon as she answered the phone, she went on a speech saying she didn't know the difference between web and wordpress developer and that she honestly didn't understand much. She is not and external recruiter, but the internal HR Manager. She also told me "but we're looking for web" (she wrote web in all the emails). I told her that the ad is titled wordpress developer on their website but that honestly it doesn't change much except the knowledge of the CMS PHP core and APIs. She started with the questions in the questionnaire which were 1. have you seen the company website? 2. have you seen the company portfolio? 3. How much money do you expect?
I don't mean to go into all the pointless comments she made during the interview, just know that she made a lot of them.
After I answered about the annually pay rate she said "and if it was per hour?". I tell her I would do some quick math and convert the yearly rate into hourly pay. I answer her question. She tells me it's great that I responded and that a girl before me had said "I don't know how much I want" and that we should all know how much we want and give an answer, all that with a very annoying tone, like if she was making fun of the other candidate. Extremely unprofessional. She tells me that the partner in Toronto, who is also my potential future employer, wants to have an interview next week. The call with the HR manager was on Friday afternoon.
Today, Monday, at 3:30 pm I get an email from the HR Manager asking if I'm available for the interview today at 5:30 pm. I tell her no, that I have other job interviews already scheduled. I didn't really like the short notice, seems like they're the only part of this conversation whose time matters. I read the reviews of the company on Glassdoor and everyone is talking very bad about it. The main concern is a lot of people are saying that you have the right to WFH 2 days a week but that if you do the least that happens is your commitment gets questioned.
Anyways, the HR Manager and I reschedule with the partner for Wednesday at 4 pm. Today, at 5:30 pm the HR emails me saying that the partner has changed his mind and wants to see me in person. The workplace is 1.5 hours from home so 3 hours of travel time for an hour of interview. The mail is sent to me at 5:30 pm, the time we were supposed to have the interview but I said I was busy. What do you think and how should I behave? I don't like that the partner has never contacted me but has HR do it instead, I don't understand the point.
I did interviews with other companies and after the first round I got to comunicate directly with the manager that would interview me next.
On top of that, the last email says they want to know if I could start immediately (like WTF I didn't event met the partner?) and that it would be a 6 - 8 weeks in-person as a freelance initially with the chance to be employed full time. I don't like that neither.
This said, I'm not really used to Canadian job market so I don't know if I am worrying without a reason or if there's plenty of red flags. I just tried to reach out to one of the employees in the same role and waiting for info. Just wanted to hear more opinions.
Also, would you mind sharing what the salary should be for this job? The requirements are PHP, JS and frameworks, HTML and CSS, custom WP theme and plugins development and a lot of other analytical skills you usually need as a dev. I have 4 yoe with very good demonstrable results and strong references.

Hi there,
I have a computer science engineering degree and will be graduating with an MBA in April 2025.
I worked as .NET developer for a year and then as Python-Django developer for 1 year. I also have some teaching experience.
I am doing some small websites along with my studies.
I moved to Canada for MBA. How do I start my career here? Any advice would help! I’m ready to put any amount of work in it!
PS: please just don’t say job market is hard and you won’t get anything, or, anything negative. I have read enough of these comments on reddit. Let’s be positive and support each other!
Hi there I am a 20 year old looking to break into the Graphic Design industry, I am looking to work with real clients free of charge as I need work to add to my portfolio.
If anyone is interested please DM or email!

Graduating with a computer science degree in April, and honestly don't have passion for it plus the job market is dead now. Was always happiest when working jobs outside or that kept me active anyways.
Open to pretty much any work as long as there's a long term career in it, and open to living damn near anywhere but would prefer it not be an oil town. Got out the last oil crash and thought getting into tech would be the smart move career wise - was a great decision then but things obviously changed for the worse and I just jumped from one dying industry to another.
Hoping to get into construction, worked blue collar jobs before university and during the summers so that world isn't totally foreign to me but I've never done "build stuff" work.
If you wanted to get into a trade and had no family or anything keeping you around, where would you go? Low QOL is a bonus but to be blunt if moving to a place like Vancouver would set me up on the path to an apprenticeship faster I'll suck it up and deal with roomates for a few more years.
