Ontario is packed with campgrounds; from world class parks like Algonquin, to privately owned land, to camping for free on Crown Land. Discuss it here.

This is a place to give tips for your favourite sites. Let others in on which lake in the park has the best fishing. Warn someone that site 154 gets a lot of highway noise! Share pictures of your back country trip, and maybe help people avoid that knee deep mud that the map swore was navigable by canoe. Let people know about that guaranteed moose sighting spot in Algonquin, or just ask what sleeping bag is best for our climate.

Where to camp - Find info on camp sites

  • Crown Land Camping - Information on Crown Land camping straight from the source. Find Crown Land and what it can be used for in the Atlas.

  • Parks Canada - Ontario has 5 national parks. Find info on them here.

  • Ontario Parks - Ontario boasts 65 recreational parks. Each is unique, and this great site gives you info about each one, and lets you reserve online.

  • Camping in Ontario - Prefer the slightly more luxurious feel of a private camp ground? This site is a great place to search for sites. It narrows them by region and will filter based on what amenities you are looking for.

Retailers - Need gear? Try starting at these sites

  • SAIL - SAIL is a massive outdoors store. One trip here could outfit you for most adventures.

  • MEC - Many would consider Mountain Equipment Co-Op to be the gold standard of quality camping gear.

  • LeBaron - With only 4 storefronts it might be harder for people to find, but their online ordering will let you get in on their extensive catalogue of camping products.

best way to find stuff?

Hi friends, I'm trying to plan a lot more camping this year, in more small campgrounds. I am having a tonne of trouble finding these. Other than just taking a day trip to drive up the areas to see?

I am looking to camp a lot this summer up the Ottawa river, (From Ottawa all the way up to Temiskaming Shores area.

I tried searching on google but it seemed pretty bare, and most of the search sites I've seen on the web seem to be showing cabins more than just site rentals.

Killarney over Easter Weekend

Was just curious if anyone knows current conditions in Killarney and what to reasonably expect for the end of March.

I have a site booked for the Easter long weekend at the end of George Lake D. I know the park gate will likely be closed and I'll need to hike in. I'm aware the park provides sleds to use, so I'm mostly curious about snow levels. Will there be enough snow that I could reasonably expect to use one? Or should I just prepare to carry in everything in my pack? Also, does anyone know the rough distance from the front gate to the trailhead of La Cloche in section D? I'm guessing only 1-2 KM based on past trips but can't find the distance anywhere online.

Will impact what I decide to bring :)

Campground help

Hello! We are Detroiters planning a trip to Ontario for about a week in July. We hoping to find a campground somewhere between Canada’s Wonderland and Niagara Falls as those are 2 places we are going to visit while we’re there. Any suggestions on a campground we should check out would be greatly appreciated as we aren’t familiar with the area. We have a travel trailer and generally prefer full hook up sites. Thanks so much!

Sibbald Point Camping

Has anyone booked camping at Sibbald Point? Booking opened today, I just tried to book and all sections of the park are full from June to August. Usually there will be odd weekdays left or a weekend. But no days at all, aside from the areas that are open year round and that is still available. What other campsites can you suggest similar to Sibbald Point?

Advice for 7-Day camping trip into Ontario/Quebec from northern US

A few friends and I are planning a 7–10-day trip from the northern US (Wisconsin) into Canada, and we were thinking specifically of driving (4WD truck) into Ontario and/or Quebec. Our intent is to canoe, fish, hike, and camp for most of the trip. Though not the main goal, we were thinking of trying to go north as far as possible in the area by vehicle. Right now, we are looking at driving to Long Point, which is on the east side of the James Bay in Quebec, camping on Crown land along the way. It appears that the east side of James Bay is Cree Nation land. We seem to be stalling out in our planning progress, so I’m wondering if anyone here has info/advice/tips on:

  • Have you made this trip before? Is Long Point worth the travel time? How is the canoeing and fishing?
  • Best time of year to make the trip?
  • Any issues or info needed on canoeing, fishing, and/or camping along the east side of James Bay in Cree Nation land?
  • Resources that clarify where we are allowed to camp (Crown Land or other)? I was pointed to foretouverte.gouv.qc.ca but am struggling.
  • Recommended alternatives for a 7-10 day trip into Canada (leaving from Wisconsin, US), driving
  • Any thoughts, advice, info is welcome! We are early in planning and flexible and trying to avoid major issues trying to plan a trip into an unfamiliar area.
  • Note: we are fairly experience canoers/campers/fisherman but mostly in the states and BWCA

Question about heavy metals in water

I hate logging around so much water and most of the places I go camping around a lake and I know you can just boil the water for a couple minutes or something to sterilize it my main concern is heavy metals I know some lakes in Algonquin have mercury in them or something so you're not supposed to eat the fish and I assume that applies to the water just wondering if anyone has a solution for heavy metals or if it's not even a concern in Southern Ontario do I need a filtration system or can I just boil water let me know what you guys think

French river loop

Hey everyone! I’m thinking of doing a solo trip on the French river, perhaps 3-4 nights. Does anyone have any recommendations on a loop which wouldn’t require a shuttle?

Rental backcountry gear GTA

I'm wondering if anyone has an idea where I can rent a backcountry tent (no heavier than 3.2 kg, 3 person) in the GTA. I have a 1 person tent as I like it, but my husband's going to try it with me and I don't think it makes sense to invest in gear until we're certain he enjoys it. We're in Richmond hill so the closer to us the better bit are willing to go downtown if need be. I've checked exclusive and it looks like they have only standard tents.

Thanks!

Best time of year to camp when it's warm but not terribly humid?

I grew up camping with my mum, but she always picks end of July-August to go and we die from the humidity. Last time was so bad our stuff never dried for 3 days after we got rained on.

I want to go camping by myself this year and I'm hoping there's a better time to go where I won't die of humidity? I want it to be warm enough because I hate being cold at night, and I want to spend time on the water.

GTA Crown Land camping?

I live in the centre of york region in the Greater Toronto Area, been looking to find a place nearby for camping, not looking for any place extraordinary, just want to do general camping so I can learn, and have good time with some bros. Most provincial parks around me don't allow camping or are closed for the season already, plus I'd rather not have to pay. I've gone camping before, but only in provincial park campgrounds.

I used the crown land atlas map to look for crown land nearby, and there definitely is crown land around in southern Ontario, even in the GTA , though obviously they're not as big areas as in northern Ontario. But they're just 40 mins drive away from me, so it'd be perfect if I want to camp a night whenever I want.

An issue I found though is that these patches of General Use Area are usually surrounded by private land, either residential areas or farms, so I don't know how to get there without trespassing, sometimes there's dirt roads, but I think they're private roads for the farms, sometimes theres rivers running by them so theoretically you could just take a canoe there but its really inconvenient. If you guys have any information, I'd appreciate it, but I'm thinking I'll forget about these spots.

I did find another good area thats designated as a Provincial Wildlife Area on the map, and on the policy report it says Crown Land Recreation is permitted, so I guess I could camp there, its a relatively larger area, and theres a river running across it, theres also roads that go across. The only issue I have here is where to park my car, its mostly just farms around the area, but there are roads with wide gravel shoulders, could I just park it there, and then hike into the forest?

Any other information that could help me, I'd really appreciate it.

Bruce Peninsula/ Tobermory October

Hi! I was able to great t a yurt at Cyprus Lake Oct.22 for two nights for my anniversary.

Any recommendations on what to do during this time in Tobermory? It’s definitely a transition and into off season…I was hoping there might be a boat tour but looks like everything closed up.

Hoping for a bit of fall colours :) but again not holding breathe going to be awesome regardless! Would love any feedback.

I booked a parking spot at the grotto. Not sure if quicker to hike from yurt or to walk from grotto parking?

Where to get topo maps?

Where would you guys suggest to get topographic maps? I've found the Ontario government online tools but I'd prefer to refer to something official since I'm just starting to use maps

How Do I Start Backpacking In Ontario?

I just turned 18, and now that I'm 18 that means that I am old enough to now travel on my own. I have always had an interest in nature, and seeing the world. And have discovered backpacking.

I am wondering, how is it possible and how do I find the places to backpack. As I understand it you can place your tent where ever in a spot in some national park that has a trail that goes on forever in some direction, you gradually camp out night until you reach some beautiful destination and head back. I however have only been able to find information about camping in campgrounds? so how do you find the places where you can just set up a tent and not have to pay all these fees?

Reservations for Parc Nationale de Plaisance (near Ottowa) this weekend

A bit last minute, but does anyone want camping reservations this weekend? We have either one or two adjacent Ready-to-camp fixed tents this weekend at Parc Nationale de Plaisance for Friday and Saturday night (you just bring sheets and food, they have everything else). Reservations are impossible to get this late in the season! We have paid in full and have to cancel, we are just hoping to get some money back NOT make a profit. They are usually $140 a night but make an offer!we have either one or two adjacent campsites

Bruce Peninsula High Dump - Having to pee at night in the backcountry and bears

I'll be camping there for two days in September and wasn't concerned about bears at all until seeing this post from about a month ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/hiking/comments/14qtra3/black_bear_interaction/

For the ones who have already used any High Dump campsite. What did you do when you needed to pee in the middle of the night being this a bear-aware territory? Did you just walk to the shared washroom watching out for any movement in the woods? I don't think peeing around the campsite would be wise considering it should attract bears attention, are those disposable urine bags something to consider? Would the scent of urine in the bag in the tent for the bears also be a concern?

Questions about Bruce Peninsula Park

Have a trip booked for the end of August. Working on budgeting for activities etc while at the park and figuring out what extras we may need.

  1. What is the cost of one bag of firewood within the park? Website fees list seems to indicate $12.98 which seems extreme

  2. Is there anywhere near by we can rent kayaks?

  3. Are the gravel tent camping sites really hard rock gravel or softer smaller gravel?

Thanks all! Happy camping!

Camping newbie

Hello everyone,

I am new to camping, so new that I have still to buy any gear. So far I have been looking only at YouTube videos to learn the ropes. I was wondering if people here have any suggestions about videos, guides, gear, checklists that have helped you learn how to get started.

As I mentioned I have no gear and would be able to buy moderate equipment. I would travel with my wife and three small kids. I would be interested in doing summer camping only at this point.

Any advice is welcomed.
