Ontario is packed with campgrounds; from world class parks like Algonquin, to privately owned land, to camping for free on Crown Land. Discuss it here.
This is a place to give tips for your favourite sites. Let others in on which lake in the park has the best fishing. Warn someone that site 154 gets a lot of highway noise! Share pictures of your back country trip, and maybe help people avoid that knee deep mud that the map swore was navigable by canoe. Let people know about that guaranteed moose sighting spot in Algonquin, or just ask what sleeping bag is best for our climate.

Hi,
Longtime Rock Point Provincial Park camper but we are trying to explore other provincial parks. I have a question about Selkirk.
About how long is the park?
How long does it take to walk from each campground section? I ask because I see that there is only one comfort station and the other areas only have vault toilets.
Is the area more suited to campers usually filled with LARGE campers or is the vibe more pop up campers and the like.
Three years ago, I took my son on a canoe camping trip to a remote area with thousands of islands. Our goal was to reach a small, secluded island. We made it, but bad weather forced us to cut our stay short after just one night. The next day, we paddled back to the mainland, and after a grueling journey, we found a stunning wind-swept pine on the shore. We decided to camp near it and wait out the storm, it wasn't the best idea in the world but we survived.
Since that trip, I’ve become obsessed with that tree. At the time, I only had a few low-quality photos from my crappy phone, and also didn't have time to appreciate it after the hard paddle and coming storm.
This year, I decided to return solo and hike back to the tree. I had camped in this area previously at an in-land lake. Although that lake was only 2 km away the hike took over 6 hours due to the thick bush. This trip I was looking at 4-5km hike but I gor lucky as only a few minutes in I stumbled my way onto a poorly marked trail.
I had planned my trip to be under the new moon November 1st, hoping to capture a photo of the tree with the stars behind it.
Armed with some of the cheapest, heaviest gear AliExpress, Amazon, Dollarama could offer, I made it happen and spent two nights near the tree. I took a lesson from my past trip: If the tree is permanently windswept its going to be windy. So, I set up camp a little further along the shore, sheltered by a rock wall and some trees.
The first night it was a bit cloudy I made the 10min hike to the tree in the pitch black with little issue. The second night I only made it half way and took pictures from across a bay of water, the sky was much clearer but I knew it was just going to get colder that night (-3°)
Here are a few photos from the trip:
Google Photo Sphere of the tree (click the circle icon for a 360 view) Its a pretty accessible area especially by boat wouldn't be surprised if it is recognizable.
Stars and Jupiter behind the tree, looking toward the forest the first night wasn't cloudy this direction.
I'm looking for, as the post says, the nearest crown land I can legally camp on. Preferably near a grocery store and not a marsh/swamp. The crown land atlas is impossible to use. Thanks everyone for help! Please don't ask me to download apps. I can find locations, it's finding the right ones I struggle with.
Hey guys, so where is the best place to find back country camp sites but without registering. I just want to show up somewhere, hike or canoe and camp anywhere whenever it feels right.
Anyone here ever done the Halloween camping at Pinery? Will the majority of people there going to be families trick or treating? Going this weekend and looking for any advice on how much candy to bring
Hey everyone! I wanted to try back country camping. Generally we car camp however I’ve really got the itch to explore more! I think it’s getting to late in the fall this year but I’d like to plan for the spring.
We have everything we need for car camping but I’m curious what your go tos are for backcountry? Your need to haves and your want to haves?
I moved to the NCR last year and am looking for others into backwoods hammock camping. I’m 52, with experience camping year-round in NS and using Crown land to keep costs low. If you enjoy similar trips, let me know about any upcoming outings! or discussions.
I was able to snag a yurt at Bruce National Park this fall.
I need a new (better) cooler. I’m thinking of investing in a YETI - but would like for it to be able to fit into the food locker rather than take it back and forth to the car. Any advice on what size fits (or doesn’t fit?)
Thanks!
Hello - I am planning on fall (late October) car camping at Pinery provincial park.
Apart from sleeping mats with a suitable r-value, any other tips and tricks? It is my first time camping this late in the season.
Has anybody ever stayed at Craigleith in Area A? We have booked a campsite for next week in Area A and on the website it says it’s quality is poor, doesn’t have a picnic table and the ground is super uneven, it’s on the water which we really enjoy but I’m concerned for the other things?
Has anyone stayed near the 20-30sites? Are they as bad as the website seems? 😂😅
I'm thinking about camping at Ferris Park after a brief day trip to the Sandbanks. I've never been there before but the pictures of the campsites look pretty promising. Anyone have any experience here? Thoughts?
I'm also thinking about rental a couple of kayaks there. Are the park kayak rentals next to the river for easy launch? Is the river challenging or is it okay for a couple of novices (myself and my 10 year old son)?
Hi everyone,
I visited the Wheatley Provincial Park recently made a tour video. Feel free to check it out if interested.
Hey ya'll!
Me and some friends are looking to do some crownland camping in between montreal and toronto, and see that kingston is right about that point, so we're looking for stuff north of that approximately.
I used this tool and can see there are a bunch of general use areas near Frontenac Park.
https://www.lioapplications.lrc.gov.on.ca/CLUPA/index.html?viewer=CLUPA.CLUPA&locale=en-CA
I'm using that crownland finder tool (horrid UI lol) to try to figure out some spots that make sense and see that some called "Cole Lake" or "Second Depot Lake" seems like a possibility.
Just wondering if any vets can recommend something nice to go to? We're not the most seasoned campers but we've all done it like 10-15 times already and it's definitely something we can swing.
I've attached some pics from me looking around the map on that tool at stuff that is labelled "General use" crownland.
Would really appreciate some insight!
Hello!
My fiancee and I are planning a wedding and would like to do a ceremony at a provincial park (or potentially a private location with campsites) and a reception at a venue off-site.
We would like to have most people stay on one or multiple connected group sites and organize some activities during the weekend—hiking, swimming, campfires, etc. We would work with the park to ensure we camped respectfully. From my experience, most campgrounds have been very supportive and helped suggest options to make it work.
I'm curious if anyone could recommend any group sites, private or public, where they have stayed. Here are a few of our considerations:
We're pretty flexible, and it's OK if some aspects of the site are not perfect; we dont expect everthing to be perfect and are willing to compromise to make it work.
All recommendations are helpful! Even suggesting a site to avoid and why it would be beneficial to help us narrow our search.
Thank you!
does anyone know what campsites are doing trick or treating events for halloween this year? and has anyone done this in the past?
Hi! First time camper camping with a group of lightly experienced campers in August at Rattlesnake Point. It will be everyone’s first trip to Rattlesnake Point.
Most videos and commentary focus on the hiking, so excited for that, but there are few reviews on the sites. Anyone have experience they could share?
I believe we’re on site 12 and my main concern is with the amount of sun the site gets and how hot that could be in mid-August.
If it’s mostly an open field, I still have a few weeks to find a tarp or something for shelter.
Hey redditors do you know a good car camping campsite in ontario close to ottawa? I’m looking at the Fitzroy park and i’m not sure how to choose the camp sites. Thank you!!
Can US citizen find camping on Himsworth Crown Game Preserve? Where do I secure a permit, ideally near S Ste Marie? Any other camping from SSM to Montreal? Thanks!
I went camping about 7 years ago on crownland in Renfrew Ontario. It was just threw the city on a back road leaving down towards the river/lake. I have been trying to find it every since. Anyone have any ideas???
I'm a part of a very small group that's looking into missing person cases around Northern Ontario, particularly cases that have ran cold and aren't an interest to law enforcement anymore.
Currently, we're looking into the case of Christina Calayca, a twenty year-old woman who disappeared on August 6, 2007 in Rainbow Falls Provincial Park. She was camping in the main Whitesand Lake campground and had gone jogging the morning she disappeared, and was subsequently never seen again. Significant searches in the area drew up nothing of value, besides an unconfirmed sighting of an unidentified Asian woman on Highway 17 at about 9:00am outside the Rossport Campground, which is a secondary site of Rainbow Falls. The leading theories are that Christina was a victim of misadventure, given the rugged nature of the area, or a victim of foul play, since the annual Terrace Bay DragFest was occurring around the time of her dissappearence.
We are seeking dashcam footage from Highway 17 in between Terrace Bay, ON and Rossport, ON on August 6, 2007. We're looking specifically for footage in between 6:00am and 4:00pm, but any time on the mentioned date is kindly appreciated. We are also looking for any trail cameras around the Selim, ON area, near the Casque Isles Hiking Trails, and around the Rossport section of the Rainbow Falls Park to check for any possible sightings. Please contact me through this Reddit account if you have any information or questions.
Thank you all for your time.
I mixed up the max allowable trailer length. I booked a site that says max 25 ft but I rented a trailer that is 29 ft. Based on pictures, there is no barrier, it's just bush around the site. My question is what do I do at check-in? Do they measure your trailer? ... obviously I am new at this, yes I know I am an idiot. Going to Port Burwell, Alzora campground.
Edit: late update but thank you all for the comments. I lost sleep for nothing. Nobody measures. There was ample space and it wasn’t even that difficult to back the trailer in. Obviously they like to be conservative when they put size limits.
Hi all! I've been going up to Sauble Beach my whole life, but have only ever rented nearby cottages. My bf and I are looking to go camping this upcoming weekend, but are unsure if we should go to White Sands or Sauble Falls. Because we're both in our 20's, White Sands would seem like a no brainer, but it is just us going and we're unsure if it would still be fun without a large group of people coming with us. I've visited Sauble Falls for the day a handful of times and it seems nice, but we're honestly stuck on where to go. Has anyone stayed at either of these campgrounds before? Suggestions? Never posted before, thank you in advance!
Browsing campsites in Park of the St Laurence and came across Morrison island. Has anyone been to the 100 series sites?

My friends and I were thinking to go crown land camping this month and we've come up with some places that from what we can tell might be good
These all seem to be non-operational parks (so they're crown land and free to camp on from what we've researched)
Does anyone have any advice/thoughts on which site we should pick?
Any other info we should know for first-time crown-land camping or about any of these specific sites?
Also side question, but where do we park when we're camping on Crown Land? random road?
I am meeting friends for camping at Sandbanks Provincial later in July but I want to head up a few days early and solo camp. I am looking for a campground (tent) within two hours that has a different feel so more forests since sandbanks is beachy. Any recommendations?
Im going down to Canisbay Lake and i really wanna get some fishing done and see what I can catch. I’m down for everything but I would love to get a trout under my belt especially a lake trout and I was wondering if anyone on reddit had any lure, tactics, or spots on Canisbay Lake that could help me catch some. Not trying to steal any spots or lures or anything I just have a rare chance to fish at algonquin and I would love to make the most of it and I was hoping someone could help me out to boost my chances.
Me and my family are headed to lake of two rivers (Algonquin) at the end of the month. Does anyone know if there are residents selling good dry firewood in the area . The Ontario parks fire wood is no good ?
Hello. I have an upcoming camping trip at Algonquin.
We have a spot reserved on canisbay lake.
To my understanding it’s first come first serve basis.
We just stayed at Grundy lake and they had bear proof containers on the site.
Does canisbay lake have the same?
I have never been before. Any suggestions of the best campsites on the lake would be great.
Thank you!
