Hi everyone I’m currently a third year math major. I’m doing the applied concentration. I wanted to know what generally are the easiest classes out of all the ones in track a of the applied concentration. Also needed help deciding between 416 or 418 or both if I should take one for the track. I’m also thinking about math 437 game theory please guide me I need 3 classes from track a. Also trying to avoid any more proof classes after 412 413 and 481 https://catalog.calpoly.edu/collegesandprograms/collegeofsciencemathematics/mathematics/bsmathematics/appliedmathematicsconcentration/
Hi!
I just cleaned up all of the inactive mods and fixed some issues that the sub has had with some old autoMods that were added years ago and kept deleting comments unnecessarily.
I'd like to build up a team of mods for the sub to own, improve, and make the space more valuable for students.
If you're interested, please introduce yourself in a comment below starting with "Interested".
Dont DM me or use ModMail.
Additionally: If you have any comments/suggestions/complaints about the sub, feel free to leave them here as well. I'd like to improve the way that this sub drives users to polyratings, for instance. This sub gets a LOT of posts asking for help with choosing professors. I'm interested in the sub being more in touch with active communities and on campus events as well.
Thanks!
Hi there,
My colleague Prof. Carlos Flores is doing an info session on the MSQE program that CalPoly offers. Advanced students might want to consider this -- it comes with great employment opportunities. Advert below!
MS in Quantitative Economics Information Session
Economics Professor Carlos A. Flores will offer an Information Session about the MS in Quantitative Economics program at Cal Poly. Join us and learn how our 10-month program provides students with significant depth in programming, statistics, experimentation, econometrics, machine learning, and the economic analysis of incentives.
Tuesday November 12th
11:10 am – 12:00 pm
Room: 03-305 (Free pizza!)
More Detailed Information about the MS in Quantitative Economics (MSQE):
In today's data-driven world, economists distinguish themselves through their expertise in the analysis of the risks and opportunities embedded in any environment, and by focusing on the causes of data trends rather than just finding patterns.
Now more than ever the value of solid training in quantitative economics methods is being revealed. Take a look at the following links, which show how Amazon, Uber and other Tech companies use modern economics tools to further their organizational goals:
- Amazon: https://www.cnn.com/2019/03/13/tech/amazon-economists/index.html
- Uber: https://qz.com/1367800/ubernomics-is-ubers-semi-secret-internal-economics-department
- Economists in Tech (and other) Companies: https://hbr.org/2019/02/why-tech-companies-hire-so-many-economists
In line with Cal Poly’s Learn-By-Doing philosophy, all MSQE students collaborate with the World Bank and other organizations on real-world projects with real-life implications. The research conducted for these projects leverages the core skills in economic theory, advanced econometrics, machine learning, and programming developed in the MSQE program. Here are some examples of previous MSQE projects:
- The Effects of City Growth on Traffic and Urban Mobility: https://dxhub.calpoly.edu/challenges/city-growth-on-traffic-and-urban-mobility/
- Identifying Food Insecurity with Enhanced Monitoring and Reporting: https://dxhub.calpoly.edu/challenges/early-warning-for-early-action/
- Estimating Poverty Using Deep Learning Algorithms: https://dxhub.calpoly.edu/challenges/estimating-poverty-using-deep-learning-algorithms/
Our MSQE graduates have had great placements and do really well on the job market in economics and data science positions, as well as applying to PhD programs (https://gradbusiness.calpoly.edu/ms-economics/job-placements/). Our program is also shorter and more affordable than competitor programs.
Consider attending the information session to learn more about our MSQE program and let me or program director Carlos Flores (cflore32@calpoly.edu) know if you have any questions about it.
Is it true that I need a 2.0 to stay in the Scholars program? Im struggling in two of my classes rn with a C and D and am pretty sure I have a 2.0 will i get kicked out of the program?
Hi, I want to say I was looking forward to this event and am excited for future speakers.
Woz is incredibly intelligent and has obviously had an amazing career, but the actual hour of speaking was underwhelming and at times hard to follow. It is great that we had someone come who was fundamental to a company as big as Apple, but I, and probably many others, didn't realize that his success wouldn't translate to his speaking ability. I hope that future events take this fact into account and pursue speakers not purely based on their accolades, but also on their ability to engage the audience.
I write this because we seem to have funding for this incredible series, and with each speaker taking a portion, I want to ensure it's being used to its fullest potential.
I mean no disrespect. I just want what is best for the students. I wonder if anyone else had similar or different opinions?
I am not a music major and I’m not in lessons or any music classes at CalPoly but I enjoy playing piano in my free time and I’m wondering if there’s a way for hobbyist musicians to practice around campus and how one goes about achieving that. I know there’s practice rooms on campus but it’s unclear how and when one can access them. I would love to know if anyone has any knowledge on the topic.
Maybe use some of your money for porta potties so the girls at your loudass parties stop pissing in front of other people's apartments! Hope this helps! <3
When told to give the number of household members would that I also he included in that number.
This is a long shot but I lost my wallet yesterday, its a black wallet with a puma emblem, and was wondering if anyone saw it. I've checked all the lost and found places on campus but nth so far. Please let me know if you have any leads!
Hey is anyone in the Masters of Science Mathematics program? I was wondering how much coding is involved in the curriculum. If you know please let me know.
I finished my bachelor in mathematics and now looking to apply for my masters.
I have get to LAX for thanksgiving break and after the break back to slo, what’s the best way to get in touch with people who may be able to drive me?
I would like to get to LAX around 11:30-12 on Nov 23 to catch my flight and I get back at 6 on November 30th and would like to see if I could get a ride back to slo that night. Does anyone know how to find a ride or have an extra seat in their car?
I'm a first-year student who passed the MAPE and also took a Precalc review class with Cal Poly over the summer. On my PolyPortal, it said I'm eligible for MATH 161, which is on my flowchart. But I got blocked into MATH 118. I would really like to get into MATH 161 since it's on my flowchart, and I will be on track. That's it. Any advice to possibly get into MATH 161? It's in my shopping cart atm.
Found AirPods Pro Gen2 in black Heyday silicone case in the road by Engineering IV. Unless lost mode is activated and I can get in touch, I’ll be submitting them to lost and found around 3PM. UPDATE: Given back to owner!!
hey all, i was just wondering what grade is the minimum you would have to get in an ocob major class to be considered as passing and not have to retake it. thanks for the help.
Why is the Mexican food here, especially tacos, so bland and straight up not good. I feel like they get their ingredients from Food 4 Less and serve it to us as is. I've gone to Taqueria San Miguel (by Poly), Taqueria El Guero (downtown), and Taco King (the worst of all). I usually get al pastor but they all taste the same. Just ate a mulita from San Miguel and that shit looked like something Id make, but much worse. No onion nor cilantro and the salsas taste like they've been watered-down like they were rationing or something.
One thing in common is that they all did not have a gyro nor some sweaty-ass Mexican dude lookin' like he ran a marathon. I should open a taco stand and I bet my shit would taste way better.
Edit: Thanks for all the recommendations. I'll definitely check out some of these in the near future. Al pastor is what I like so my reviews are based on that but I won't give up on the other meats.
winter 2025 will be my last quarter at cal poly, and the only class i have left to take is my senior studio. i’ve got a lot of room in my schedule for a fun credit/no credit class (i would take beekeeping but it’s not offered during winter).
anyone got any good recs?
edit: engineering students won’t stop making the same joke so yall are banned from commenting
You belong at Cal Poly. I know the silence is deafening right now, but just know that there are folks in your corner. Queer and trans students, students of color, undocumented students, you make the community a better place and I’m so glad you’re here. No matter what kind of racist, homophobic, sexist BS you encounter, remember that you make our school better by being here. Sending lots of love.
I'm currently in a research and design class, ANT 455, and for my final project we need responses for our survey related to climate change and climate anxiety. It only takes about 2-3 minutes to complete.

Hi there,
Hope you guys are faring well. Under BEACON, I am offering a research project on "Heuristics, Identity, and Society: Unpacking Stereotypes and the Dynamics of Polarization." This is a great opportunity for advanced students if you're interested in understanding how stereotypes form, the role of heuristics in identity, and the social dynamics behind polarization.
Perfect for anyone intrigued by social psychology, behavioral economics, or interdisciplinary research in societal dynamics! If you’re interested or have any questions, feel free to reach out to learn more or you could check the advert here.
I thought I remembered that you used to be able to buy cases of Yerba Mate at Campus Market. They’re not there anymore, only cases of monster and water. Anyone know where I could buy a case?
Anyone have insight on double majoring at cal poly?
I want to play more soccer and was wondering when and where does pick up happen.
When are students typically signing leases for off campus housing? Leases that would run July-June. I have a rental and feel I may possibly have been doing it too late…
:(
I know the Canyon Post Office at PCV closes during Thanksgiving week, but does anyone know what happens when a package is sent out and will arrive during that week? Do they send it back, or does the Post Office in SLO hold onto it until the PCV Post Office reopens?
Is there anywhere on campus?
Is there any way to gain access into Frost's restricted area? Do I have to fill out some form somewhere or take a specific class? It seems like such a nice study spot that barely anyone ever uses and it has really good desks/lamps. I always study in Frost and finding open seats there can get pretty annoying. Thanks
