If you are 2% at 62 or something along those formulas for retirement, then your code is 2M. This is the basic miscellaneous code. If it is something else or you are Saftey/Industrial then you'll have to check with your PS, ask them what code is showing as your Retirement Code on your PIMS Screen.
To use this, place the following into their respective fields:
-Flex Cash (when it returns) and COBEN Cash goes in Flex Cash Option
-Total Other Flex Deductions is health, dental, vision, premier vision
-Total A/R is if you ever have/expect an A/R to come out of your check
-Total-Voluntary Deductions is most everything else such as ARAG, special deductions for your bank, fees
-Deferred Comp/TSA is Savings Plus

Is it out of our monthly or top range?
I recently interviewed for an AGPA/SSA position with an agency well known for MQ'ing applicants. I understand that most agencies hire SSA for new to state employees. I never received a MQ withhold for AGPA (which I know they are notorious for), and all of the communications have stated that I was interviewing for AGPA. No differentiation or reference to SSA was made during the interview. I know there is a chance they will still only consider me for SSA even if I qualify for AGPA. If they offer SSA, what steps can I take to see if they will consider me for AGPA? I want to be able to address this immediately if they offer the SSA position. I have the experience or I would have been DQ'd. I just cant afford to take the $1000+ pay cut at this point. Especially if I qualify for the higher paid position.
Is CalCareers slow or do I not get those credits?
I've worked in my current spot for a little over a year and in another dept for 6 months (temp about 3 years ago.)
I'm confused how I'd obtain these credits. HR says for every month I've worked FT?
I've a friend with over 10 years of experience in Shipping & Receiving. If she were to look into working for state, what is the job title that corresponds to that?
I was talking to a co-worker when I left the state to take a job with the county in the Bay Area. This was before Covid, so it was a hellish 5 day per week commute. I took it because it was tough for me trying to get a promotion from Associate ISA to an ITSI. I got the largest pay ever with the Bay Area propelling me to six figures ($40k more than I was making at the state). I also got to keep my CalPERS. When I left I had a co-worker ask me why would I leave since I’m vested. I told her the Bay Area county I was leaving for also was CalPERS covered. But she kept insisting we were already vested with the state. I told her that’s not true. You don’t lose your CalPERS if you’re moving over to another CalPERS employer. She never understood because she still kept saying, “I could never leave I’m vested with the state.”
I’m not sure if many people know that you can move between government agencies. And even if it’s not a CalPERS agency, they have reciprocal agreements between agencies such as the City of San Francisco Pension, University of California Pension, County of Santa Clara Pension System, etc…
Also, one of my previous state co-workers who was an SSMI at the state was making $94k/ year. She left to take a management job at the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) agency and she’s doubled her salary ($198k/annually) while keeping her CalPERS.
Just putting this out there if people feel like they can’t get a job with the state. There are other options. Not only that, but if you’re finding it difficult to promote, leave and come back.
FYI: healthcare is also a huge factor when retiring and not every agency offers the same healthcare retirement benefits. So do your due diligence and research or ask questions before actually taking the job.
I'm new to state applications but have two jobs I am being considered for: one is SSA Permanent and one is Information Officer I Limited Term. If I am lucky enough to have both offers come through, would it make sense to take the SSA one just because it is permanent? And is a permanent position *prior to passing probation* any more stable than a limited term? Or are both on the chopping block if there are cuts?
So I've been working for the state fir about 2 years now, and I have questions about the retirement thing.
Before the state i worked as a mechanic for 18 years and I never really thought about retirement or anything like that. I always figured I'd never retire or live long enough to, until I kind of fell ass backwards into the DMV.
My questions are these, as a DMV employee, I have the retirement deduction on my check every month which is a pretty decent chunk of money, but I got a statement from SAVINGS PLUS PROGRAM, and the available balance doesn't come close to the amount that's been taken from my check. Is there a difference between the SAVINGS PLUS and the retirement deduction from my check?
So I recently did a physical i recieved a conditional offer for a custodian position contingent on passing physical which I passed. What is the next step and how long after are they going to contact me I did the physical on Wednesday.
Happy Friday all, I have couple of RDA 2 interviews coming up soon. Just wanted to ask any tips and resources to best prepare for these interviews? I have good knowledge and experience with Excel. I also have solid knowledge of Power Bi and Tableau. Any other tools I should be familiar with? Thanks in advance.
I am so confused with conflicting information, I only care about one thing, maximizing retirement age or reducing it using Sick Leave/Vacation or Annual Leave by converting it to state credit.
My understanding is that SL/Vacation provides more hours, and AL less.
BUT some people here say that you CANNOT use SL to count for anything on retirement. Is this true?
Basically, I don't care about anything besides whichever option gives me more service credit, which one is it?
I can only get state credit for sick leave? Vacation and annual leave are just cashed out right? They both have the same value? Seems to be I should just stick to SL/Vacation.
Multiple executive orders regarding mass layoffs, full return-to-office mandates, deferred resignations, and the elimination of agencies are causing a mess among federal workers. Hopefully it never happens here in CA.
How many of you will be attending this? Is it frowned upon for State employees to attend protests? The last time I protested was at the Women's March eight years ago and I had a different job.
I'm wondering when it's appropriate to submit a reference list. Is there a specific stage in the hiring process when this should be done?
I am just happy I have made probation, though I assumed I would it jsut feels nice to have that stress melt off me.
What type of things did everyone else do when they made probation?
Is Overtime only when 40+ during the workweek? Or when going over 8 hours on a single day?
I clocked 9.5 hours for 5 days but didn’t get more than 1 hour overtime on the paycheck (maybe because meal penalties added 1.5 hour to each of those days? Didn’t take 30 min lunches and got an hour extra free on those days)
I'm relatively new to the service. Unfortunately our time cards are due today, but my boss is out right now so I can't ask him. Does anyone know if we're allowed to use sick leave that we have not yet accrued? I was out for 28 hours this month due to a nasty cold, but I only have 20 hours banked. Do I have to use 8 hours of vacation for that, or can I use the amount of sick leave that I'm about to accrue for it?
Happy Friday fellow Caltrans TEs/PEs.
I have a question about the probationary period and salary progression. If my one-year probationary period ends but I haven’t received any probation reports from my supervisor, does that mean I’ve automatically passed probation?
And if I do, is the promotion to Range B with the salary increase automatic, or does my supervisor need to take action with HR for it to happen?
How long do you guys think it will take to implement the biweekly pay? 🤣
Hi, I have a couple of questions about the DFPI Licensing process. How many years back does the background check look into, and do traffic violations outside the scope of the look-back period become disqualifiers in determining an applicant's license approval status?
I love reading these so I figured I’d share mine!
Interviewed for SSA with CalPERS November 20, 2024.
Sent a follow up email December 20, 2024.
References were checked December 23, 2024.
Received a conditional offer January 17, 2025 (submitted live scan fingerprinting that same day).
Fingerprints were rejected January 24, 2025 (resubmitted live scan fingerprinting that same day).
Received a firm offer January 30, 2025.
It felt like it took forever, but it actually happened really quickly. I made it a personal goal of mine to promote to an analyst and leave DMV within two years of promoting to an MVR and I actually did it!! I’m so excited to be moving on from DMV and I can’t wait to begin this new journey as an analyst.
I’m also super thankful for this subreddit. I received a lot of awesome feedback and suggestions that really helped me improve my STD and SOQs, ultimately landing me this job.
Thank you guys so much! Let’s goooooooo
Hello fellow state workers…
I accepted a promotion from ABMA to SSM I at the beginning of January. I was one MSA into my previous position as an ABMA and my second one would have been scheduled for March 2025. I was on a hybrid schedule where I reported to the office or the field 2 days a week. I was also on AWWS so I had every other Monday off.
I thought it would be good for my career advancement to take this SSM I position but I’m actually really regretting the move. I never really wanted to be a manager but I thought the right thing to do would be to seek a higher income long term and accept the opportunity I was presented with.
After receiving my first check, this promotion is about a $250 pay increase which is virtually cancelled out by the fact that I’m required to be in office 4x a week and it’s a one hour / 35 mi commute each way. PLUS, this job is located in DTLA and parking is costing me upwards of $145 per month. Of course, long term the position caps out at a higher pay than the ABMA position.
I’m getting really close to requesting mandatory reinstatement. Can you please share the knowledge / experience you have with this?
I’m also specifically curious if my original MSA date would still be effective, should I go back to my previous position?
Thank you for your input.
When do we get raises? Jan1 st? July 1st? BU1
For those that work at DOF, what is your experience? Kudos points if in the IT role.
Any specific things thay DOF has that stands out from the rest of the state departments?
My JC had 100+ apps, 6-7 interviews and 1 position which I got.
I was told that HR determines your work xp based off what’s on your resume. I didn’t include all work xp. Will they consider only what’s on the resume or my total work xp?
TIA.
Hey everyone,
Like my title says, I received a tentative offer for an SSA position with the DMV, and I’m trying to get a better understanding of what to expect. Since this will be my first state job, I’d love to hear from others experience in the state.
A few things I’m curious about:
(I assume this probably varies by department.)
How structured is the training process? Will I have formal training, or is it more of a learn-as-you-go situation?
What does a typical day look like for an SSA? How manageable is the workload?
Any insight on CalPERS and benefits? How it works and what I should expect?
Any advice for someone new to the state system? Things you wish you knew when you started?
I’d really appreciate any insights or advice from those who have been in my shoes. Thanks in advance!
Hi, I'm trying to apply for a job, I've written a SOQ but I don't know how much information to truly include. I don't want to write too detail or too little.
Do we include the SOQ questions in our word document or just answer the questions ?
Hi everyone!
So I applied for the role of EPR and interviewed for the role last week. Received a Phone call with someone from EDD on Tuesday asking for an updated list of references which I provided. My concern is this- she stated she needed this information within 48 hours so she can send my file for approval. Does this mean they are looking to offer me this job but it is technically contingent on my reference check?
Any help / feedback would be appreciated!
I’m panicking because I spoke to my references and they stated they have not spoken to the person who would be calling to conduct the reference checks. This EDD rep also claimed she left a voicemail with one of my references and this reference stated she never received a voicemail from the EDD rep.
I’m nervous they have moved on to someone else. Any hiring manager here that can give me some advice on how I should move forward?
The EDD rep. said she would call me if she couldn’t get a hold of my references and she hasn’t called. Her initial call was on Tuesday when we spoke and she asked for an updated list, 48 hours would have been up yesterday, Thursday. Am I okay? Am I overthinking this? I really want this job.
I’ve been contemplating on becoming a supervisor or manager. However, I don’t know if all the stress and constantly attending meetings is worth it for an extra $10k-$15k/year more. Anyone who is a supervisor or manager or who used to be, how did you like it?
All Feedback is welcome.
I have 14 IT college credits and 1 year of tier 1 helpdesk experience. I have my CompTIA A+, Net+ and Sec+.
Is that enough to meet the minimum qualifications?
Hi all,
Quick question for anyone who might know the answer please. How does an OOC position work? For example, I just applied for an OOC position at a different CDCR institution than I currently work at, and if I get chosen, does my current state institution I work for have to give permission in order for me to fill the OOC vacancy at the other, or do I get to automatically fill the OOC bc I applied and was chosen? Any information is helpful, thank you.
