I am offering two great group training opportunities for tomorrow morning. Both will meet at the Houghton Pond parking lot (Houghton's Pond Recreation Area, 840 Hillside St, Milton, MA 02186) - park on the side of the lot by the pond.
6AM - 2 hours of hill repeats on Houghton Hill. Each repeat is .85 miles with 450 ft of gain. This is solid power hiking practice on steep terrain coupled with technical downhills. I usually do each repeat in ~17-20 minutes, and I am not trying to push it - think all day pace. If anyone wants to go faster or slower, awesome! We can high five each other when going by.
8AM - Exploratory 2 hour run. Maybe on the Skyline, maybe not. Distance 5-8 miles, vert 1000-2000 ft. Should be a mix of technical trails (rocks and roots) and some smoother single track and forest roads. We can adapt to the group's need.
Note: It is going to be rather warm relative to most mornings we have had so far, so bring water. Better safe than sorry. If you have any questions, let me know by dropping a comment. Feel free to join for the 6AM session, the 8AM session, or both!
Also, if you are not familiar with TARC, here you go!
Volunteer participation needed for research study examining the effects of recombinant human erythropoietin and acetazolamide on physical performance at moderate altitude (9,842 ft); and physical performance and susceptibility to acute mountain sickness during prolonged exposure to high altitude (14,107 ft). You must be a healthy individual between the ages of 18-40 and run at least 3x per week and can complete a 2-mile run in ≤ 21 minutes. You will be asked to exercise at moderate altitude (9842 ft), then randomly assigned to receive either recombinant human erythropoietin or saline over a 4-week period, then again exercise at moderate altitude. You will then travel via airplane to Colorado, then travel by car to the top of Pikes Peak Mountain (14107 ft) in Colorado Springs, CO where you will reside for the next 15 days. While at altitude you will perform exercise, assessment of acute mountain sickness, and be asked to provide blood samples.
The study has 5 phases with testing to occur over the course of ~10 weeks/41 days. Phase 1 consists of seven days (one ~1.5 hour day, two ~2 hour days, one ~4 hour days, one ~5 hour days, and two ~5.5 hour days); Phase 2 consists of 13 days (twelve ~1.5 hour days and one ~2 hour day); Phase 3 consists of three days [two 4 hour days (2 hours in the morning and 2 hours early evening) and one 7 hour day(5 hours in the morning/afternoon and 2 hours in the early evening)]; Phase 4 consists of 15 consecutive days at high altitude (at 8 hours per day); and Phase 5 consists of three days (three ~2 hour days).
If you are an active-duty military member or federal civilian participant, you will receive $30 per blood draw (16 for the study) for a total of $480. You will only be compensated for completed blood draws. If all blood draws are completed and you travel to Colorado ($100 travel per diem), you will be compensated $580.
If you are a non-federal civilian, you will also be compensated $30 per blood draw (16 for the study). Additionally, you will be compensated for your time ($25 per hour). Compensation for participating in this study will be made in five installments: 1) $637.50 after the completion of Phase 1; 2) $450 after the completion of Phase 2; $375 after the completion of Phase 3; $3000 after the completion of Phase 4 plus $100 for travel per diem; and 5) $150 after the completion of Phase 5. If all blood draws and study time are completed, you will receive up to $5,192.50. All payments will be sent in the form of direct deposit to your bank account.
If you withdraw from the study or are withdrawn from the study by the PI, your payments will be pro-rated. It may take several weeks after completing the study for you to receive payment. If interested, please call Roy Salgado, Ph.D. at 508-206-2375 or Adam J. Luippold at 508-206-2330 or email usarmy.usariem-tmmdstudies@health.mil.
Im fairly new to Massachusetts so im not familiar with the races on eastern Massachusetts and the Cape that have good competition besides the BAA 10K which i cant attend because of a wedding. I was wondering if anyone could recommend any races around the distances of a 5K to 10K with runners that can run in the 15s or 32s? I would be fine with any distance less than a half marathon or even if its a trail or track race. Even going down to Rhode Island would be fine.
I'm staying in the financial district (Hyatt Regency Boston at 1 LaFayette) and am looking to do a couple running routes today and tomorrow. I've run along the Charles River paths on a few occasions during previous Boston trips, so I was looking to try a route on a different side of the city.
How is the Harborwalk for running? Is there a particular side I should stay on (e.g., the one on the Boston Harbor Hotel side vs. the opposite side)? Also (and this is probably a dumb question), what's the better direction to run in on the path?
Thanks
Hi everyone! Moving to Boston for work, moving from NJ and before that Texas! I'm getting an apartment in Chelsea, one of those newer ones. I was wondering if people have some advice, where to shop for groceries, what/where to avoid, where are the big parks to run or routes to run! Restaurantes, gym recs etc.
Thanks !!
Anyone remember Tommy Ratcliffe? Or Karen Smyers? Or Mike King?
Tommy often wore the kit of Johnson & Wales while winning and winning and winning.
Karen won the Ironman. Could run a low 4:40 for the mile, too. Connected with Mike.
Was watching a PBS documentary on Tommie Smith and John Carlos last night. The Stand: How One Gesture Shook the World. Directed by... Ratcliffe. Produced by King. Credits also to Karen Smyers.
Familiar personalities aside, this was a great watch.
Hello everyone!
d I am currently a first year student in the Dental hygiene program at Middlesex Community College in Lowell. I am currently in need of patients for my spring semester. These appointments will be 3 hours long and you will need to come back 3-5 times to complete treatment.
This is a great opportunity for people who do not have dental insurance since the prices are affordable. Cleanings are $27 and we do take some forms of insurance to help cover that fee. If cost is a barrier please reach out and I will pay for your service
I am offering to pay the $27 cost if needed
Dental Hygiene Care
(may include patient assessment, scaling, rootplaning, fluoride & toothbrush)
Adults: $27
Children (15 years old and under): $22
Adults Age 60 +: $15
MCC Students, Staff & Faculty: $10
Other Services
Dental Sealants (per tooth): $10
Custom Athletic Mouth Protectors: $15
Individual X-rays: $5
Bitewing X-rays: $15
Full-Mouth X-rays $25
If it’s been a while since your last dental cleaning. No shame! That works out even better for me, since I am required to achieve a certain level of difficulty, in order to graduate.
If you, your kids, family members, friends, or anyone you may know, needs a cleaning send me a message and I would love to see you as a patient.
Appointment hours are as follows:
Tuesdays:
9am-12pm
1pm- 4pm
Thursdays:
1pm- 4pm
I am at that point in the training and a bit sick of the track. Any suggestions for good 1 mike stretches for repeats?
Have known John for ... decades. Was sent a link, but could only read long enough to see his name and that he is now banned from coaching. Anyone have access to an alternate article? Or maybe provide some info as to what the article is about? tyvm
Is Gone For A Run, a commercial enterprise which seems to be based in Norwalk, CT, related to or a part of the B.A.A.? They have a Christmas catalogue out which offers running related gear, including several items which appear to have the B.A.A. logo (the unicorn) plus the colors (blue and yellow).
Not sure if I should buy any as gifts because I am confused as to who is selling and who receives the proceeds. If some company is glomming off the B.A.A. trademark without having a license to do so, I ain't buying. That's money that should go to the B.A.A. or its running club. imho
Shot in the dark… is there anyone that got a Men’s Medium that would be willing to exchange for a Men’s Large?
Hi! I'm looking to run a 5k over thanksgiving, and I don't want to sign up for a 5k where I would be the only one going sub 17 (or hopefully sub 16), so I was wondering if you guys knew which 5k's posted faster times. Thanks!
My trainer offer to join me as a pacer and I wanted to see if anyone is not running and willing to give his bib.
I’m running my first half marathon next weekend (: I’m terrified!
Anyway, does anyone have a recommendation for where my parents should park and a good spot for them watch? They were thinking Chestnut St, but I am nervous that road will be closed. TIA!
Hi everyone - out of towner coming to Boston to run the BAA half next week. I cannot for the life of me figure out where/how we pick up our teeshirts, and nobody at BAA is answering my emails. Does anybody know? Thank you!
I [24M] moved to Porter Square recently and have been searching for someone to run with a few times a week. Looking for someone who can hold 7-8 minute pace for 4-7 miles. The sticking point has been on mornings—I love running at sunrise but all the running clubs I've found meet in the evenings or after 9 on weekends. Any ideas on forums or groups that might aid me in my search?
Hello!! I’m new to Boston and I can only run early in the morning. Is it safe to run on the Charles river path around 5:30am?? I went this morning and didn’t see as many runners as I thought I would.
Looking for a group that meets to run the Esplanade. I found Marathon Running Company does but only on Wednesdays. Does anyone know of any weekend Esplanade run options with another group?
Hi all,
I'm totally new to running; I started about 5 weeks ago because I need a better way to exercise my 11 month old puppy and walks just weren't doing it. I started off slowly after reading some Reddit forums online and am surprised that I don't hate it lol. However, my feet are the problem. I only did 5km the other day and I couldn't sleep at night because my feet were so sore.
I have completely flat feet, my right leg is slightly longer than my left and I broke my right foot two times in the last 5 years 🙃.
So I'm ready to spend a decent amount of money on proper shoes to make sure I keep running and run right. Is there anywhere that has a range of running shoes from different brands where they help you pick based on you feet and support needed and all that good stuff?
Thanks in advance for the help!
Hi folks; I just found this community and I was delighted. This fall I had to switch to a crack-of-dawn schedule and I was surprised how few people I crossed paths with along the Charles around sunrise. Now that it is pitch black and getting towards tights weather, though, there are lots of people out!
I was wondering, since I also saw a lot of marathon jackets this morning-- is there some sort of popular training schedule that kicks on right now?
Any good indoor running tracks in Boston for the winter?
I've been wanting to run in a place that doesn't have too many cars/people, and the South End area (Northeast and East of Northeastern) seems pretty nice. Would you recommend this place, or any places similar?
And do you have any tips? I know the basics, like only cross when it's safe, don't just go running on the streets, and make way for people walking. Anything else? Thanks!
Are you allowed to run along Charles river at night? I remember seeing signs saying something park closed at dusk/dark, but I still sometimes see people there. Is it okay to run there when it's dark?
Is there any updates on the stadium hours? I went a few weeks ago at 5AM and it was closed:( I can only go during the early mornings because of work and does anyone have any info?
