New to Bön—best books and online sanghas

Hi everyone, I’m new to Bön and I want to ask for recommendations on the best introductory Bön books there are out there.

I’m currently taking a tögal class with a Geshe and I love to get a wide overview of the tradition. I have experience with Tibetan Buddhism, Nyingma, and Dzogchen.

In addition, are there any good, accessible sanghas online?

Ironic that it's called the 5th tradition...

... when it's really the first :P

How do you practice Bon?

I'm interested. I like the deities, rituals and all that stuff. I'm Ji-shu, Japanese Pure Land.

Is it similar to Tibetan Buddhism? And why are there so many schools? Why can't there be one Tibetan Buddhism?

That's all. Thank you. 🙏🙏💐💐

Edit: I guess I'm asking about Yungdrung Bon, not the prehistoric, pre-Buddhist animistic Bon.

Does Bön believe in a soul?

Hi there!

Does Bön believe in a soul, or something that transmigrates from one life to the next? Does it believe in a self; an atman of sorts, that sets it apart from Buddhism?

Did Bon originate in Persia?

According to the lore surrounding Bon's origin, it came from Eastern Persia. Does this kind of make Bon then a Persian religion, on par w/ Zorostrianism?

How can I begin Bon?

Hi there!

I'm going to buy a big book on Bon, and I'm meanwhile interested in resuming my breathing meditation practice. What are some other simple ways I can get started in Bon? Also, what does Bon have to say about the Buddhist concept of emptiness?

What happens after the Rainbow Body?

Is the Rainbow body the ultimate goal in Bon, while Nirvana is the ultimate goal in Buddhism? Also, are there differences in how karma and rebirth work according to Bon and Buddhism? Also, what happens after the rainbow body is obtained?

Is Bon Buddhism or something earlier?

Basically as the title says. So confused as to whether Bon is actually Buddhist or has just been co-opted by it as a political move.

Experience with sherab chamma ling?

Has anyone here had dealings with them? I registered for an event there in April but I got my dates mixed up and am trying to get a refund but so far they have been incredibly unresponsive by email. Do I just have to write it off or is there any hope here?

Shardza Rinpoche’s Great Spiritual Songs of the Experience of Bliss & Emptiness November 5, 12, 19 & 26, 2022. 10 am pacific time, with Geshe Dangsong Namgyal

Geshe Dangsong Namgyal presents No. 1 Conversation with a Bird Online or in person Suggested donation $10/class English with Spanish translation

Register: kunsanggarcenter.org/songs

This song provides an interesting discussion between the master and a bird. Shardza Rinpoche often practiced in his hermitage and nearby a beautiful bird asked him many questions. The topics regarded the body, speech and mind actions becoming real dharma. In this dharma song, he talks about the experiences in his main practice and meditation. We can come to understand great meaning of how these topics of ground, path and results appear in a higher Dzogchen practitioner. Finally, the bird received all answers from the master, was happy and gave advice for good practitioners for developing pure practice.

Tibetan Rimé Geshe Namgyal primarily teaches Dzogchen. After 25 years of study in monasteries in Tibet, India and Nepal, he attained his Geshe degree. In the past nine years, he has established the Kunsang Gar Center and has been teaching in California and online. He most recent books are Pure Dzogchen and Holy Women of Great Perfection. Geshe is renowned for his knowledge of ancient script and often translates texts previously not available.
