Nc woodcock on public

We only found one but we had a good run. Birds are starting to show up now. Ember wasn't impressed after chasing grouse up north in October

Collar Conditioning to Recall

I’ve got a 8 month old Brittany and we’ve just started to work on collar conditioning for recall. In the field she listens great but when we’re in the backyard she treats it more as of a game and is more hard headed to recall. We started collar conditioning with vibrate. We were in a closed room and I vibrated when she wasn’t pay attention until I got my hands on her completing the rep. Afterwards she just shut down, wouldn’t leave me at all and wasn’t interesting in training for dinner. We would do some small drills with food right in my hand but she was still timid. I’m using an educator ez900 on the lowest vibration setting. She doesn’t have a negative reaction to seeing the collar or wearing it. I’ve backed off since the first time and just confused for what the next steps might be. Any advice?

Advice For a Defeated Hunter.

Hey yall. Hope everyone’s season is going well.

I’m here to ask for advice. If this post is wrong for this sub I’ll delete it.

I started seriously upland hunting last season in West Wisconsin with my 2 year old vizsla. It was great! I was out filling my limit every weekend, the dog worked like a rock star, and I thought I was the second coming of pheasant hunting Jesus. Shot down over 20 birds and even shot a bird with a 24in tail. I was proud of all the hard work and time I had put in with my dog.

This season is quite the opposite…….the dog is still nailing it, thank god, but I on the other hand have missed/not shot at about 10-12 birds that should’ve been in my bag. I’ve only shot 1 and I’m feeling like I’m doing something wrong. It’s like I have the “pheasant hunting yips”.

I didn’t get to shoot trap this spring and summer due to college for engineering. I feel like even if my life depended on it I would not be able to hit the broad side of a barn. When I get home the dog even looks at me like “what the heck was that?”.

I have 3 weeks left in my season and I’m about to call it early. Anybody have words of encouragement or advice? Sorry in advance for the long and whiny post.

Gifts for bird hunters

My husband loves upland bird hunting. I don’t know much about it. He hunts with our two GSPs. What are some gifts you’d love to get for Christmas this year that are bird hunting related?

Bird hunting near Forsyth county, North Carolina

Any public access areas in or around Forsyth county that has good wild bird hunting? Considering getting into the sport but wondering how far I’d have to drive to get a decent hunt. Thanks in advance

Waterproof,/windproof outer layer for upland

I am looking for a good pullover, sweatshirt, or jacket to wear when it's raining or extremely cold. I layer up top and bottom with Merino and sometimes a synthetic underneath. I run hot so typically I don't need anything over my base/mid layers. I need something to wear in the rain, snow or when I just need one more later. I'd prefer a 1/4 zip because I also wear a strap vest. I'm trying to decide on something before the sales are over.lol

Maverick 88 vs Stoeger p3500

I was looking to getting into more birding hunting and wanted to get a cheaper shotgun that I could use for various birds. These 2 were what I concluded on but I’m unsure which is the better pick. Am I better off saving $150 and going with the Maverick or is it worth spending a little more to get the Stoeger? Any thoughts ?

WA Upland Hunting

Title says it. Eastern WA born and raised, but moved to Kansas a while back. Got very into upland hunting chasing bobwhite out here. Have a young GSP that points and holds well.

Relocating back to Spokane and curious on the upland scene within driving distance of the area? Specifically quail.

I know terrain can be rough and due to my young dog, I’d like to go nowhere near Quilomene etc. hoping more Palouse mild terrain.

Any advice or input on the quality of the chase out there?

What shotgun are you using?

12g or something else? What brand/ model?

I am using a Winchester SX4 12g

I would love to buy an over under for snowshoe hare and grouse hunting.

Update: Wow!! So many model / brands I was not aware! I love it ! Thank you so much for sharing!!

Update 2: after looking into the different models I cannot decide between the CZ all terrain over under and the CZ side by side bobwhite!

Any birddog photogs here? Question about fl/aperture

I have been carrying an SLR while hunting this season, and I am thinking of getting a little more serious about getting good photos of dogs working. If there's anyone here doing this, would love to get your input on what works for you lens-wise, both focal length and aperture.

First timer here - best way to dispatch a bird if the initial shot is not fatal?

Hey everyone, I didn’t grow up hunting so it’s all new to me. I got my first grouse yesterday but the inital shot was not fatal. What is the best way to quickly, efficiently, and effectively finish the job? I obviously don’t want to cause it any extra unnecessary suffering.
