Two amazing echinoderms, a long-spined sea urchin and a yellow-colored crinoid (sea lily), appear to be overseeing this assembly of smaller benthic invertebrates, such as the bluish/translucent glass sponges that were found in the Caribbean Sea near Puerto Rico. ๐Ÿ“ท: NOAA

A filter-feeding fish that's the size of a whale, it's the beautiful whale shark (Chondrichthyes). The unique shape/pattern of spots on a whale shark's skin will identify an individual. Whale sharks are often found following plankton blooms. ๐Ÿ“ท: Krzysztof Odziomek

This scaleless and long-snouted fish is called a longnose chimaera (Chondrichthyes) or longspine spookfish. The longnose chimaeras (two ๐˜๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ต๐˜ต๐˜ข species) can reach a max total length of 140 cm (55 in). ๐Ÿ“ท: NOAA

(Chordata, Lophiiformes), is a benthic anglerfish that can reach about 5.5 in (14 cm) in length. There is a retractable mop-like lure, the esca, located on a short stalk between their eyes, that is wiggled to attract prey. ๐Ÿ“ท: NOAA

This largely unknown brittle star species, ๐˜–๐˜ฑ๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ค๐˜ข๐˜ฎ๐˜ข๐˜น ๐˜ฉ๐˜บ๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜น, is thought to only inhabit Caribbean waters up to 1,000 m deep. The holotype specimen was found offshore from Cuba with a disk diameter that measured 13 mm (0.5 in). ๐Ÿ“ท: Smithsonian Institution

With feather-like arms, crinoids (Echinodermata) extend their arms perpendicular to the current such that they can catch plankton and detritus in the water that passes around them.

At a depth of ~3,700 m (12,140 ft) in the Marianas Trench, this deep-sea inhabiting and holoplanktonic ๐˜Š๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ด๐˜ด๐˜ฐ๐˜ต๐˜ข medusa (Cnidaria, Hydrozoa) is characterized by having two sets of tentacles โ€“ short and long. The long tentacles will angle/extend outward for capturing prey. ๐Ÿ“ท: NOAA

Amphipods are generally small (<10mm or 0.4in length) and characterized by having two pairs of antennae and 13 body segments. Species identification of amphipods (+9,900 known species) is complex and DNA barcoding is often used. ๐Ÿ“ท: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Amphipodredkils.jpg

An amazing cartilaginous fish (Chondrichthyes) skeleton and one of about 240 known species classified in the stingray suborder Myliobatoidei. This skeleton shows the bilaterally symmetric framework that enables their benthic and/or pelagic life histories. ๐Ÿ“ท: Steve Huskey

Offshore from Alaska, NOAA is mapping new areas of the seafloor. A bonus of such exploration is discovering displays of ecology and biodiversity. From Glacier Bay National Park, here are sea anemones and soft corals that are called red tree corals, ๐Ÿ“ท: NOAA
