Hi everybody. I'm a PhD student who works on improving sports safety gear to reduce impact injuries/pain in sports like bicycling.
You can help me by filling out a very short (1-2 minutes) survey here:

I appreciate your time in advance!
Hi folks in the vicinity of Rochester/Auburn Hills/Pontiac - I recently got a used recumbent trike. I don't have a great lock at the moment, just a 6ft combination cable lock, so I've been reluctant to take the machine out much. Live a couple miles from Oakland University and have parked the trike there and at the Village of RH for several hours without trouble, but I'm wondering if there's anything to fear from theft. Because I have a big, exotic trike, it's hard for me to secure it properly.
Also, if you guys have recommendations for bike shops with good selection in mid/north Oakland & Macomb counties, would appreciate it as I have some accessories to buy. Thanks
This is a long shot but I've seen some success stories on the sub so I figured it was worth a shot. My boyfriend and my friend both had their bikes stolen this weekend.
The first bike was stolen sometime between Friday 7/29 at 8:30pm and Monday 8/1 at 8:30am. It was taken from the parking garage at Lafayette Towers. There were multiple other bike locks on the ground and other bikes tampered with, so I would assume this happened late Sunday evening/Monday morning. My boyfriend's bike is a navy blue Batch Step-Thru Comfort Bike. It had a few Detroit stickers on it and a bag on the front and the back.
My friend's bike was taken from her apartment in Midtown. It is a red Marin bike.
If anyone sees anything at a pawn shop or on marketplace, please let me know! I'm keeping a close eye on things just in case they turn up! In the mean time, we've all learned the importance of registering your bike, knowing the serial number, and investing in (maybe a couple of) really really good locks.
I'll be in Roseville later this summer on a business trip for one week. I've got a gravel bike so I'm not afraid of "suboptimal" infrastructure. Is it worth bringing my bike to cycle in the mornings or late afternoons in that area? Are there any parks or multiuse paths? Or is it strictly dangerous roads without shoulders?
I am coming to Detroit for summers and found a nice place to stay in Plymouth. My workplace is in Redford. Since there's no public transport from Plymouth to Redford, I thought might as well bike. I am going to probably take the Ann Arbor trail to Detroit. Does anyone know how the trail is? Is it bikeable? Am I crazy to bike so much to work?
There are dozens of reasons to get back on a bike this spring: the weather is improving, gas prices are rising, individuals are returning to work - the list goes on.

I am interested in joining a club. Any recommendations?
M-DOT has announced it will be starting bridge and ramp construction (and lane closures) on Feb 21 2022. The freeway rebuild for I-275 between Will Carleton Rd and 6 mile Rd. started in 2021 and will extend into 2024 (there are short shut downs in construction through the winter months).
Ramp and Bridge construction obviously can impact trail access, especially with the actual demolition and rebuild of bridge spans, so I thought I would start a thread on the subreddit where we could discuss the impact of trail access or use during these time frames.
There is a website with construction announcements https://www.revive275.org
I am personally unaware of any trail infrastructure improvements or outright closures at this time. On one map on the site the trail was marked as a construction zone but there was no clarification in text on the site. So.... maybe they will let us know through the linked site when it happens? If anyone knows more, please share. Thanks
I'm meeting some friends at Belle Isle on a Saturday morning to do some biking in a couple weeks and have been thinking about parking near Dequindre Cut and riding to the island. Ideally would park at the top of the cut to take it all in.
Does Jefferson have bike lanes between Dequindre Cut and the MacArthur bridge?
Any parking suggestions? I lived in Detroit for 20 years, so I hate to come across like a scared suburbanite (I live in Royal Oak now), but just looking for a relatively secure spot near the top of the Dequindre Cut that would be available on a Saturday morning. I'm female and will be by myself, most likely.
Have read suggestions for Layfayette Foods and Gratiot for parking and then someone posts who says those are not good spots.
Every time I ride or jog through the Dequindre Cut I will need to maneuver around people walking in the bike lane, riding bikes in the walk lane, people jogging in the bike lane, scooters flying through the walk lane, and the occasional Slow Roll that wants to take up the entire width of the Dequindre Cut path and expects everyone to get out of their way. Would it be better off if the lanes were removed or just have two lanes in the Dequindre Cut for all northbound traffic in one lane and all southbound traffic in the other since the three current lanes are disregarded by so many people?
Someone just posted on Nextdoor that they received a ticket for not coming to a full stop on Catalpa in Berkley while cycling. Catalpa is a very popular east/west route, but there are several stop signs and the ride would be pretty terrible if you had to come to a full stop at each one. No warning, full lights and siren were used.
My typical MO is to slow down, look in both directions multiple times and then proceed, basically treating a stop sign as a yield sign. Times when I do come to a stop because of a car approaching, I'm waved on by the driver about 75% of the time.
I live right off of Catalpa in RO, so this is a real bummer for me.
is this happening in 2021 for sure? i'm new to bike racing and looking to do a race

Hello,
I have created a page for outdoor enthusiasts in the Northville/Plymouth/Livonia area (i.e. Hines Park). There are many great places to explore there. I am riding my bike every day when it is not freezing. Please give me a shout. Thanks, Lee
Great Lakes, long rides up north, bike trails in forests and urban bike lanes. Michiganders like to MOVEE!!!!! MDOT currently has a survey out to collect feedback on strategies to be implemented for the Michigan Long Range Transportation Plan. Let your voice be heard and BE A PART of a plan that will shape the way we get around our great state for the years to come. Over the past few years, I started to really care about roads, sidewalks and the movement of people - and even if you do not nerd out on sidewalk design, you probably still use them. Your voice should be included!
Take the survey, share it with a few friends! You know what to do! :)
A couple of weeks ago, I was stopped by a tree that fell on the 275 trail south of Eureka Rd. Does anybody know if it was cleared yet?
Hello everyone! As the title says, I am in the market for a new bike. Honestly, I haven't truly owned a bike since I was a teenager and now I am 29. (I have been using my brother-in-law's mountain bike recently). I spent the last 4 days learning everything I can about bikes and I still have a lot to learn. I also realized that a "good" bike can cost a couple of thousand dollars. After much research, I found the Giant Revolt 2 bike for $1000 that meets all my needs and then some. Plus I feel like gravel bikes are good for any Michigander or Detroiter with our roads. Every bike store seems to be sold out of everything right now but fortunately, the local bike shop can place an order but will take 3 to 4 weeks.
I was so convinced to go to the shop today and order it but then my buyers' guilt kicked in and my wife is unsure if I should get one or not.
I know what I getting is worth what I am paying for and there are other pros to such as exercise, new hobby, great price for a good bike, I plan to ride at least 3 to 4 times a week, maybe commute to work and several more. The only con that I can think of is spending the $1000. I have the money which I was going to either use on vacation this year or buy a new game system this Winter, I normally hold small savings account to treat myself each year. I don't make much money but I do live comfortably,
So what I would like to ask everyone is, would buying a bike for $1000 be worth it? Are there hidden price expensive down the road that I should look out for (other than yearly tune-ups). How can I justify buying that bike over some random hybrid bike from Target or Walmart? Any advice would be helpful.
Hey you guys,
Wondering your thoughts:
So, I scoped out a nice $1400 Framed bike (Marquette carbon; their aluminum $949 is sold out :p). Meanwhile, my parents thought otherwise, as I need to save for college. Any tips on finding a 27.5+er trail bike -- size lg -- under/around $1000? Do you know of anyone trying to get rid of theirs?
Thanks!
Looking at doing a short bikepacking trip this summer. Taking some young guys with me who have strength, but not stamina. We're trying for 20, maybe 25 miles a day, followed by setting up camp and messing around in town.
I see two options, there may be more.
Option One: Pere Marquette Trail, Midland area to Reed City.
Option Two: Fred Meijer Clinton/Ionia/Shiawassee Trail, Owosso to Lowell / Grand Rapids.
Anyone have some experience with this, or another good trail for bikepacking around here?
